webfact
NLA lauds PM for using Section 44 to tackle Songkran road traffic accidents BANGKOK: -- The president of the National Legislative Assembly (NLA) today lauded the prime minister for invoking Section 44 of the interim constitution to tackle road traffic deaths during the upcoming Songkran water festival. NLA president Pornpetch Wichitcholchai said the prime minister saw it an urgent need to resolve road traffic fatalities during the upcoming festival, and came up with the use of power under Section 44 to enforce the existing traffic laws more effectively. He said making changes to existing laws to tackle road traffic deaths was a matter if time consuming and might not be in time as the Songkran water festival is drawing near. WhizBang
OMG, Article 44? And that worked so well at that flying saucer temple, right?
rkidlad
Well, the government is slowly realising that you can't just demand people do the right thing. It won't change anything. But they're still not understanding that A44 is not a magic power. It doesn't mean omnipotence. It's merely more words added to a demand. If you use A44, use it to make examples of top dogs and dangerous drivers. If the small police aren't doing their job, you fire their boss. What am I saying? Literally wasting my time writing this. tracker1
Had a year to do something since the last Songkran and the year before that and the year before that, now it's a matter of urgency ! Ahhhh more Gunna Do !
webfact
Junta wields absolute power again. This time to require seat belts. By Sasiwan Mokkhasen, Staff Reporter Policemen and rescue officials on the scene of a Jan. 2 crash in Chonburi where 25 died when a van collided with a truck. Photo: Matichon BANGKOK — The junta used its absolute power Tuesday to mandate everyone must buckle up for safety, whether they are in a car, truck or riding a public van. Saying the extralegal measure will save lives during Songkran, junta leader Prayuth Chan-ocha used Article 44 to order that all passengers must wear seat belts, not just drivers and passengers in the front seats as required under the law. Kasset Tak
How about all these cars that don't even have seat belts for backseats like most taxis, 2 door pickups and so on... and then as clifric said how about all the people raiding in the back of pickups and trucks?! DM07
It's the same bull.... every year! Big words, no action! You don't need to turn the whole Songkhran- party into a dry affair! In Germany -especially the Rhein-Ruhr-area in the West- they have Karneval every year! They get drunk out of their eyeballs abd OF COURSE, there will be some accidents...but nowhere near the number we get here! Why? Because guys who get caught drunk driving, will actually face consequences! This is the same BS like every year: no alcohol...safer driving...blah blah blah As long s as the police don't get their @$$ up and the EXISTING laws are enforced, nothing will change! No Article 44 can ever change that!
Thailand
When we lived in Cyprus many of our Cypriot friends did not bother with seat belts they would simply cross themselves before setting off, that didn't work either.

mark01
Use Article 44 to stop songkran. Period!!! Problem solved and will bring "happiness" to everyone that has to endure it every ******* year.
williamgeorgeallen
have to wonder how 44 will be used. not that we will find out if it worked as for some reason the number of road deaths reported during songkran is quite a bit less that the daily average over the rest of the year. Redline
Nice, so you will get crushed and mangled with your seat belt on, and the person that killed you will get a 2000 baht fine, and their license suspended for 2 weeks. Meanwhile, the copers are in the A/C texting their giks. Maybe they should give the car drivers some of those 100 baht motorbike helmets they were giving out before. Just some extra protection from the cement truck Doh!
Jonmarleesco
And how precisely does the PM think invoking S44 will achieve this laudable objective? The RTP have the tools; they simply can't be bothered to use them. Is S44 really going to change that mindset?
jerojero
Ah.... The magic power of Art 44. Once invoked, always achieves its end. Will not make a damn difference in road accidents! Overhaul the entire RTP, and that might help though.
jonclark
The one glaring fact that seems to have been over looked. The white elephant if you please. Is that of the 3800 accidents during the seven deadly days of songkran and 3500 deaths, 81% of those accidents and deaths involved...motobikes. only 5 % involved cars, 2% involved buses and min vans and the rest 14% lorries ans pick ups. So how will Article 44 be used meaningfully to tackle motorcycle accidents and deaths over songkran? From what I have read
