At least 12 killed after Texas church bus crash

REUTERS

AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) - At least 12 people were killed and three others injured when a Texas church bus carrying senior citizens had a head-on collision with another vehicle on Wednesday, a Texas state trooper said.

The church bus had 14 people aboard when it collided with a pickup truck, with one person in that vehicle. The cause of the crash was still under investigation, said Sergeant Conrad Hein, a Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman.

The accident took place about 80 miles (130 km) west of San Antonio.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott and his wife extended their condolences to the victims.

"We are saddened by the loss of life and our hearts go out to all those affected," he said in a statement.

First Baptist New Braunfels said on its Facebook page a group of senior adults affiliated with the church was involved in the accident. It said they were returning from a three-day retreat.

These people in Texas know nothing - it was the wet road combined with brake problems that cause the accident

Sad tp read about a buch of seniors getting killed instead of enjoying their lives on a church

tour.

Geezer

This made international news.  Lucky that never happens here!

What was the bus made of? Cardboard?

Geez sounds like nobody was wearing a seat belt and in a 1st world country!!!

They trusted that God would protect them. They should have died peacefully of old age with their families around them at some point in the future.

The police department in question has a policy that eliminates speculation; upon further review and double checking the evidence they'll make a statement.

Accidents happen when fallible people get behind the wheel (who among us are not prone to error?), or make the mistake of not wearing  seat belts, etc. Sometimes maintenance professionals make mistakes too.

Sadly, they were taken from their loved ones accidentally.

NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas (KWTX) Jack Dillon Young, 20, of Leakey, who was driving the pickup truck that collided with a Texas church bus, killing 13 of the 14 church members aboard, told a witness he was texting behind the wheel before the crash.

Witness Jody Kuchler, 55, of Leakey told The Associated Press that he spoke to Young while Young was still pinned in the wreckage of the pickup.

He said Young repeatedly apologized and acknowledged he had been texting while driving.

Kuchler was driving behind the truck and said it was being driven erratically before to the collision on the rural two-lane road.

Kuchler says he told the driver, "Son, do you know what you just did?"

He says the driver responded by repeatedly apologizing.

“He said, ‘I’m sorry, I’m sorry. I was texting on my phone,’” Kuchler was quoted as saying.

"Texting while driving " !
Causing such a needless loss of life!
Really don't need to say anymore !

RIP to these people and condolences to their family and friends.

nice post klikster... soon I would assume after the young man speaks with the police they'll release a statement... texting while driving... what a waste ... a totally unnecessary thing to do when anyone is piloting a motor vehicle... and now he has to live with the moral and legal consequences... a very sad and avoidable event...
