BURI RAM: -- DUE TO intense opposition from local residents and pressure from authorities, anti-corruption activist Veera Somkwamkid was forced on Wednesday to abandon his plan to inspect a casino being built at Buri Ram’s border with Cambodia.

He wanted to prove that the casino, billed as Cambodia’s largest and most modern, was being built on disputed land.

The casino, which is more than 80-per-cent complete and is scheduled to open early next month, is located near the Thai border, with disputed claims that it encroaches on Thai territory.

The Second Army Area, which has jurisdiction over the border province, previously maintained that the casino was being built on the Cambodian side of the border and that the military would not allow any encroachment on Thai soil in the interests of national sovereignty. Despite the assurance, people have raised concerns.

Archaeologist Veeraphan Wilaiphan, who inspected the casino construction site, said the location was clearly within an area claimed by both countries.

The casino is located less than 100 metres from the “free zone” border point, which was agreed by both countries, while a market on the Thai side is located about 300 metres away.

According to local sources, the casino belongs to a Cambodian businessman. However, critics have said that judging by the casino’s location very close to the border, it must have got help from “people with influence” on the Thai side to get the green light.

Traders and villagers who protested against Veera’s planned inspection of the casino site said they were concerned the visit might result in further delay of a plan to upgrade the local border-trade checkpoint at Chong Sai Taku.

For crying out loud.  Casinos, according to Thai news, are a place for wealthy Thais to print money.  They are the only ones allowed to invest.  Sure the Cambodians make money too, as they allow the Thais to avoid strict gambling laws in Thailand.

These no man lands for gambling are perplexing.  Was leaving Cambodia for a wedding in Thailand via Poipet.  Wanted to buy some really good whiskey.  Went to one Casino's liquor store run by Thai women.  Had US dollars. They said the money had to be converted to Baht. Asked why.  They said that prices were in Baht.  Then asked them where this Casino was.  They said Cambodia.  Responded by saying: "In Cambodia, USD is legal tender".    The conversion they were offering and their attitude was off putting.  Went to the same sort of place in the Casino next door run by Cambodian girls.  They said the same sort of thing, but they laughed and were far more agreeable on the "exchange rate" from USD to Baht inside Cambodia.  An interesting, yet childish scam for the Thai elite.  Always try not to patronize establishments run by the elites. Been told the only good thing about these casinos is they provide training for people who end up in Macao or Singapore.

How dare anyone say Influential Thais might be involved in gambeling

Yeah, in fact, I do not know anyone who  gambels.

I have seen some good things on borders--ever been to Donok? A little country store on the North Carolina- South Carolina border has it entrance on the teetotalling  NC side and its back entrance on the more liberal alcohol-selling/card-playing SC side. The local NC minister enters in NC and ventures into SC; comes out back in NC with a smile on his face, usually with less of his parishoner's money.
