Fewer accidents in first quarter of 2017 in... Cambodia

Featured Replies

There were fewer traffic accidents in the first quarter of 2017 compared with the same period last year, government officials said, but still urged road users to exercise caution. According to a statement by the National Road Safety Committee, there were 983 traffic accidents from January to March which resulted in 489 deaths and 1,456 injuries.

Most accidents happened in Phnom Penh as well as in Kandal and Banteay Meanchey provinces. “Driving over the speed limit is the most common cause of traffic accidents. Drunk driving and other factors also played a role,” the statement said.

Interior Minister Sar Kheng, who also heads the committee, said last week that the decrease in traffic accidents mattered little as more needed to be done to further reduce the numbers. “Traffic accidents have decreased but honestly, it’s still unsatisfactory. We need to find a solution to reduce it some more,” he said. He urged city and provincial authorities to more strictly enforce traffic laws in a bid to discourage people from speeding.

ThaiVisa, it's also in French

I suspect it is due to how bad the traffic has gotten. Not so possible to speed in Phnom Penh these days....
