A woman refugee worker died after being kicked by an elephant while on her way home to celebrate Songkran on Friday.

Wansa Khiriarchadai, 26, an employee of the UNHCR shelter in Thasong Yang district in Tak, was attacked by the tusker while she rode on a motorcycle driven by her husband on the way to Mae Sot.

The husband, Boontham Chokthammakan, 31, told police that as they travelled along a road through Khun Khao Pawor National Park in Mae Ramat district, they encountered a herd of six elephants.

The elephants, startled by the sound of the motorcycle, then charged them. Boontham said he stopped and ran, but his wife, who ran in another direction, fell and was kicked by an elephant.

RIP to this poor woman

Police need to start taking action with these idiots removing the exhaust from scooters.

what Thais are doing is completely removing the functional exhaust of scooters making them extremely loud as there is no longer a silencer, they think it is cool to have their scooter deafening people when in reality all it does is make them look like idiots - drops the performance of the scooter and keeps people awake at night.......IT IS NOT COOL and is immature and childish behavior.

The Authorities really need to get a handle on this problem as the created noise pollution from hundreds of scooters running around is highly disturbing and there are more and more of them every day doing the same thing. The police have let this get well out of control.

Where in the article does it say the motorbike was modified in this way?

It is not just scooters, where I live there seems to be a "Car Club" of sorts and every other 10-20 year old hatch back, pick-up and 316 Compact has a huge exhaust fitted and the drivers deliberately make as much noise as possible. These cars are not fast, just noisy.

RIP to the lady, wrong place, wrong time (wrong husband).

maybe since they have huge ears he might have given some consideration when he thought it was so cool to approach them on his scooter without an exhaust, tragic lesson and someone has died because of it

not so cool now is it

yes I mention scooters because there are so may of them compared to cars, making noise seems to be some sort of childish need

I have a big bike here for many years and did fit an exhaust system that was louder than stock, my reason was primarily safety, it passes the noise  test every year when I go and get it tested for tax etc

What is going on with these scooters is something entirely different, any combustion engine will make a lot of noise if there is no effective device to deaden/surpress  the sound...........people who are familiar with model craft with an engine of maybe 5cc will get this..................they are extremely noisy (deafening),  without some sort of effective surpression which generally adds weight and so they tend to not bother, but those little model aircraft cars etc are noisy ...............really noisy

anyone use a petrol strimmer ?  would you like someone to be using one next door at 4am when you are trying to sleep

Is there another article written somewhere that you all are reading???
You all seem to have an amazing ability to garner incredible detail that isn't in the posted article!
The article says

But no... somehow it gets changed into....

that's an example of a real man running for his life and leaving wifey got killed.

Bloody a..ehole needs a damn good slap.

But somehow, you know that he didn't implore his wife to go 'this way' where we can get shelter, but she ran in another direction, maybe into an open field... who knows. Maybe he even tried to grab her to get her to go the right way, but she panicked and tore away from him into an insane direction. What's he supposed to do, commit suicide and follow her? He could have struggled with her until the very last second possible... nobody knows. What's he supposed to do, fight 6 elephants? Such great armchair valiant warriors fighting for women, give me a break.

Yes the husband was responsible for the noise

They were driving on a road through a national park. Where does one get the idea that they thought it was cool to approach elephants at all? The article says they stopped when they saw the elephants. It isn't clear exactly when or where he stopped, let alone what he thought is cool or that he approached the elephants after seeing them at all.
It doesn't take an excessively loud bike to be considered 'noisy' in such a place, especially to elephants! Elephants charge nice and quiet cars as well! I've even seen one do in a vehicle with it's engine off and the occupants whispering to each other. There is no evidence from the article that the bike was modified or louder than any other bike on the road anywhere.

This guy could be a great honorable guy. And in his grief all he gets from TVers is ripped to shreds mercilessly out of pure 100% ignorance as to who he is or if he did anything remotely wrong.  I don't get it why there is so much of this crap in TV. And I read so much about how stupid Thai people are?? It appears to me that there are a lot of TV members who need to take a long look in a mirror!

They ran in opposite directions ... she left him!

Let's face it, something extreme happened to them and as they tried to cope with the situation, they fled for their lives.

You weren't there were you? Thought not. The man is probably devastated by what happened and petty TV finger pointing is not helping anyone.

He is not a man, he is a wimp.

Ran off and left his wife.

No proper man would do that.

You were not there.

You are relying solely on a significantly incomplete news report.

Whilst the age of chivalry should still be alive, you are merely opining what you think other TV readers want to hear.

The man and his wife apparently faced six charging elephants and his wife died yet here you are concerned with your own definition of a proper man.

We all know you are THE man, only doubt if that also is true ones you are away from your armchair and TVF, but you don't seem to get it that if you're charged by 6 elephants your best chance to survive is to separate.

Because the herd will most likely all go in the same direction.

Now come back, my armchair hero, and claim that you would have sacrificed yourself to save you wife's life.

Alot of  ifs, and buts, they ran in opposite directions, very possible she panicked and took off on her own. Hard to judge here without more info.  Seems to me riding a loud motorbike in elephant territory was  poor planning.

Definitely impossible to judge from this article. And the same goes with how loud the bike was. A perfectly 'quiet' motorcycle coming around a corner and suddenly facing a small herd of elephants, at who knows what distance, in a very quiet national park, could very well have been 'loud' to the elephants, but normal or even quiet to what any city dweller would judge it. 'Loud' is very subjective. And for all we know, the author of the article is completely incorrect about the sound of the motorcycle as the cause for the charge. They may have been spooked suddenly with a bike coming around a corner at 50 kph, or just about any speed, as they were meandering along in the jungle/forest. There are all sorts of reasons why they may have reacted that have nothing to do with sound. And if any were in musth, the best anyone could do is get the hell away immediately no matter what. They can go from seemingly docile to a raging charge without any provocation whatsoever.
