Two soldiers accused of armed robbery

Featured Replies

TWO armed robbery suspects were charged yesterday with stealing money and a gold necklace from a husband and wife in Svay Rieng province’s Kampong Ror district. Soldiers Seang Kimhuoth, 50, and Tep Phearun, 35, were arrested by provincial police on Monday.

Bun Sam Arth, deputy chief of the provincial police serious major crimes unit, said the pair stole cash and the necklace worth about $3,000 from a 49-year-old cigarette vendor as he drove his motorbike with his 43-year-old-wife in a secluded spot near the Vietnamese border on Saturday afternoon.   “The suspects pursued the victims by car to steal their property,” he said. “During the robbery, one of them pointed a pistol at the victims.

“He threatened to kill them by firing two bullets into the ground near their feet and ordered them to hand over the money and gold necklace. After the victims offered up the property, they took it and drove off.” The soldiers were arrested on Monday after the victims remembered their car license plate number and identified their faces.Police recovered a K-59 pistol with several rounds of ammunition, the necklace, the car and other items related to the robbery.
