TAIPEI (Reuters) - Taiwan's presidential office on Friday said it had no plans "at this stage" to hold a telephone call with U.S. President Donald Trump, and understood that the United States had priorities in handling Asia-Pacific regional affairs.

The response came after Trump brushed aside the idea of such a phone call, following a comment by Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen that she would not rule one out, in separate interviews with Reuters on Thursday.

"Based on the good mutual trust and understanding between Taiwan and the United States, we understand the United States has priorities in handling regional affairs," Presidential Office spokesman Alex Huang said in a statement.

"At this stage, we don't have such a plan."

The government would pursue Taiwan's best interests, Huang added.

There will be no phone calls between Taiwan and the Donald until the North Korean ICBM development concerns have been resolved. Even crazy Donald can see there is no upside in poking China with a call when you are hoping China can bring North Korea to heel.

Totally Irrelevant. What did Trump say to the Taiwan Government? He gave them their first ever hope of recognition despite China's protestations. The country was riding high for weeks. He was clearly, as usual just talking shi*e and had little or no idea of the consequences of what he was saying.

Example 2 - The S Koreans already hate him for saying the 'armada' was on it's way to their rescue, only to find out it was in fact bound for Australia. His actions now are irrelevant as he made a 'promise' to the S Koreans and then it transpired it was very far from the truth. You know the SE Asians I presume, they may now smile and nod politely but will distrust him forever.

It was arranged in advance, as such calls are.

Trump’s Taiwan phone call was long planned, say people who were involved
