It all depends on the direction you are thinking of taking. Are you thinking of broadcast, corporate or just the basic wedding video production?

If broadcast, then it is a difficult industry to get in, unless you know someone, you will normally require a degree in media studies in the UK and in the US it is all union enforced.

I would imagine it would be difficult to go on any video or media courses here in Thailand unless you read, write and speak Thai.

The future of video production has recently taken a big step with what is referred to as 1080 or High Definition. In my opinion there are 2 basic types of HD - Broadcast and non Broadcast quality. This artificial distinction helps to explain the various type of equipment and their practical uses.

The Broadcast HD formats are for 'proper' HD productions, dramas, documentaries and feature films, whilst consumer HD camcorders are basically high performance DV camcorders. The resolution of these cameras are higher than DV and some of the cameras have good, flexible menus and can perform surprisingly well. It may be a bit condescending to describe them as similar to DV, but they are closer to DV camcorders than to the HDCAM range of camcorders.

As for editing, HDCAM can be edited in a native totally lossless environment on either a Sony XPRI non-linear editing systems or an Avid Media Composer HD.

It’s also easy to transfer HDCAM rushes via an i.LINK (IEEE 1394) connection for low cost off-line editing in Standard Definition with a wide range of popular desktop packages.

Buying a camcorder and a non-linear editing system is not that simple. There are other factors to consider and several accessories that are vital to both camera work and editing. I have been involved in the industry for over 25 years. A camcorder is useless without several other components or a shooting kit

A Shooting Kit (Camcorder)

Camcorder – consider the type broadcast or non-broadcast HDV or HDCAM – Frame rate 24fps, 25fps or 50i/60 interlaced operation.

You will still need :-

Tripod – Vinten Cartoni or Sachtler then the fluid head

Lighting – Arri, Kinoflo, or Dedo, Stands

Location Monitor

Cables

Location Sound Recording Camera microphone is basicaly used for ambiant sound on a single channel

Many factors here to consider - most frelance cameramen or women avoid this area and only get paid for the footage - However if you intend to produce your own productions you will need to know:-

Do you intend to on-line or off-line?

Which program Adobe Premier, Pinnacle, Avid or Sony XPRI

Do you buy a dedicated package or upgrade an existing computer?

Do you intend to output onto tape or DVD if tape then you will need an editing player recorder dedicated to your choice of format

thats why I thought the Canon XLH1 is probably the best bet at about $7,000 US but wanted to give this guy a goog insight to the market.

even with the Canon there is the other bits to consider if he want to make a living from creating video considering his previous posts

As far as Mini-DV goes there are also advantages with going with a fixed lens, three chip camera such as a lower profile and much lower cost.

It all depends on what you intend to do texpatriate. I would avoid DV and opt for HD. But if Russ wants to buy an outdated camcorder I have a Betacam BVW400ap for sale with a 2x fujinon 15x8J lens - big camcorder and still in demand in the thirdworld

THANKS FOR ALL THE ADVICE ,much appreciated in uk i studied film studies and cinema history .and im currently making a documentry over here .i used to have a sony hd camera befor but sold it cos i thought i had finnished and over obvious reasons.im looking for a used cannon xl1 or 2 at the moment now , but im still trying to find any camera or editing courses but the only one i can find is sae and it costs 190.000 baht but the thing is one i canot afford it and to im not so botherd about diploma i just want to learn new knowledge on the subject .i cant do any day classes as like all of us have to earn a liveing if any idears or any cannons for sale greatly appricated as always

Far and away, one of the most widely used prosumer editing programs now is Final Cut Pro, but as others might tell you, that can be an expensive undertaking, getting the computer and the other kit you need to properly use it.

I have a colleague who worked for over 20 years in commercial video production. About two years ago he bought an Apple G5 and got iMovie as part of the bundle.

For the past several months he's been demonstrating bits of what can be done with a prosummer camera and iMovie on Apple's OS X. It really is impressive what he's accomplished, especially given the investment made.

I reckon he's got about 6-7K US dollars into it. But he repeatedly comes back to emphasize two points: 1- For what he can accomplish today, it would have cost him literally 100's of thousands of dollars only 10+ years ago. 2- The ease with which he accomplishes the tasks are stupendous. iMovie is so intuitive it makes editing the videos nearly thought free.

If the OP is really serious about the editing buy Apple and get himself two monitors. The width of the dual monitors will allow you long timelines to play with.

I'd have to seriously disagree with that. As much as I like Apple and FCP (we use them at our facility), he can get by just fine with a good PC and Adobe Premiere.

He would save a lot of money to be certain.

That damned G5 or its Intel successor is a huge amount of machine for a hobbiest.

He might try the iMac, 17" in. or bigger screen, buy an external harddrive for merdia storage and get by at as good a price as a PC though. An extra screen is nice, but certainly a luxury unless you are under time crunches or simply have the dosh.

I do know the local Apple resellers will load the units up with software, so he might work FCP into the bundle and save there.

Other than that, he is just as well off using his camera as his deck and saving money there too.

Perhaps my post was too obtuse. I didn't mean to suggest the OP run out and buy a G5. What I did want to stress was nearly any Apple computer [with exception of the MacBook] running OS X on an Intel processor will be an immediate, delightful, creative experience- even excluding Final Cut Pro.

Including FCP in the bargain would put icing on the cake.

If the OP goes the Apple route he gets a systems that just works- an intuitive near effortless creative platform.

On the other hand, if he gets a PC, he'll be managing the firewall, updating the virus definitions, monitoring the latest IE Phishing alerts, checking for Service Pack updates, rebooting, researching why the latest Service Pack update caused a .DLL file to go missing, then get on with the creative process.

Which in XP begins something like this: Yes System Tray, I did indeed plug in a camera. Thanks for reminding me... Now, could we stop with the system thought balloon pop-ups please, I have a video to edit.... Gosh where did all my system resources go? Perhaps I'd better scan for malware again. Gee.... Why is SpamTool.Win32.Mailbot.az at the top of my %CPU processes list?
