NLA head says draft legislation on political parties to be clearer this month

BANGKOK, 5 May 2017 (NNT) – The President of the National Legislative Assembly (NLA) has let on that legislation to do with political parties will achieve greater clarity within this month.

NLA President Pornpetch Wichitcholchai said that all committees reviewing and revamping draft legislation are working to the best of their ability, especially those working on the draft political parties’ act and the draft election act, which he expects will be clearer by this month’s end. The Election Commission is currently drafting 2 more organic laws that will be incorporated into reviews.

The National Reform Steering Assembly (NRSA) meanwhile, has resolved to finish reconsidering draft acts on media ethics and freedom within 7 days as suggested by ACM Kanit Suwannet, a committee chairman who has also recommended the setting up of a national media professionals council alongside other developments.

So you have one committee deciding what political parties can and cannot represent or say, and how many seats to keep for the army.

While another committee is deciding how much of any of it can be reported fairly, or even reported upon at all.

A new committee to investigate what the word democracy actually means, for political parties and the press is clearly called for.

Yay! Clearer legislation this month! Can't complain about that. Maybe next month even more clearer! And the month after that!

But, we wouldn't want a legislation that is too clear now, wouldn't serve us at all. There has to be a balance between clear and obscure, especially with legislation.
