THE DEPARTMENT of Special Investigation (DSI) has seized assets worth Bt50 million from a tour company whose executives allegedly duped people into investing in a group-tour business with a bogus promise of high returns, causing damages worth Bt250 million.

DSI chief Pol Colonel Paisit Wongmuang said yesterday that 100 people – many of them doctors – had allegedly been lured into investing Bt250 million into the Nice Day Travel Co’s group-tour business operated under executives Parinya Burassakan and public hospital physician Dr Jiratha Thonglua.

Special Case Office 1 head Pol Lt Colonel Phayao Thongsen said the suspects allegedly lured former schoolmates and doctors to join the scam while they also joined with Parinya's cousin Apiwat Akaradech to encourage many to invest in drinking water and souvenir dolls to sell to foreign tourists.

The DSI searched two target locations in Bangkok's Chom Thong district – a house that was used as the company’s office and another Bt30 million home in Chom Thong that Parinya bought.

Besides impounding the two houses, officials seized three cars, seven motorcycles, and Bt6 million cash that Parinya placed as a down payment on a Lamborghini.

Phayao urged more victims to come forward and file complaints at the DSI or the Economic Crime Suppression Division.

Phayao said investigators would soon apply for an arrest warrant for Jiratha, who apparently has continued to work at the hospital. Parinya had already surrendered to police and claimed he was duped by Apiwat, who also had a doctor wife and had some business collaborations with Parinya.

Even doctors are stupid enough to fall for scams it seems. I would have thought they had the intelligence to work out that anything offering unusually high returns is generally fraudulent.

Maybe Thai's will think twice before investing in these get rich schemes. There seems to be at least one uncovered

everyday.

I would have thought that seizure of assets would be after a court ruled on the case. At this time the charges are 'alleged'. Seems to work a bit back to front here, if 'work' is the correct terminology.

Assets are much more likely to be available if seized at time of charging than after the court case. Seems to be standard practise in many parts of the world.

Many of the doctors here are from the elite families and have either bought their way through university or had some one else take their exams.Coming from a family with money does not make you smart ,only venerable.

I think they are aware that fraudulent activities will take place...they just hope the scam they invest in takes other people's money. ;)
