They're trying to get Moto GP.

Moto GP will generate air traffic oncea year. The current events at the stadium/circuit generate minimal air traffic.

This upgrade has almost nothing to do with sport and more to do with the fact that air travel is becoming fashionable and affordable to many residents of Buriram.

The development costs quoted really aren't that high.

Actually Moto GP is due at CIC at the back end of the calendar in 2018. The circuit is designated FIM grade 1 (cars) and FIA grade 2 (motorbikes). Only the 6th circuit in ASia to have this FIM grading I believe. To get a Moto GP event is extremely prestigous. It was due to be raced this year but there were problems as CIC is Chang sponsored/named and Singha are the local Moto GP sponsor. By improving facilities including a much larger apron and customs and immigration (local immigration office opened last autumn), will give the circuit a better chances of global meetings rather than just regional eg Asia Touring Car, races. Transport facilities for bringing in equipment by air is necessary for this. I believe Newin had been pressing for sometime to upgrade the airport to achieve this. He does like to be on TV promoting the circuit. As we all know prestige is everything in Thailand.

The circuit put Buriram on the map with a much more affluent group of Thai society who like their performance cars and bikes. This in turn has helped Buriram's image and increased the amount of local tourism. And now we have the casino at Chong Sai Taku.

Interestingly I see Nok has changed their late flight so that it will compete with the Air Asia flight. Personally I think that was a mistake. I doubt we will see any extra flights until 2018.

A shame the airport wasn't built on the original choice between PhraKhon Chai and Buriram. The army's choice and changed due to local political influences.

If or when a MotoGP is awarded to Thailand watch the rush of development on the existing track at ChonBuri.

It is my guess that ChonBuri will try to compete with CIC to get the races there.

Let's face it. If there was a track certified for Moto GP in ChonBuri they would easily be awarded the races.

The sticking point of big events in Buriram has always been insufficient hotels and reastaurants. ChonBuri will not have that problem.
