An online confidence trickster using messenger on Facebook tried to scam the deputy head of the Ayuthaya police, it has been revealed.

Now deputy Phuwadit Chanakhahaphat has warned Thais using Facebook and the Line application to watch out for scammers after another of his friends was approached in a marriage scam.

Phuwadit showed reporters the messages he had received on messenger from someone using the name "IdeaSock" who claimed to be a special forces operative of the US military in Syria.

The fraudster said they had come across a cache of US dollars and needed Phuwadit's name and ID details to have the money transferred to Thailand.

Then he would get a cut of the loot.

He went on his personal Facebook page to warn about the scam and a friend in Krabi said that she had been asked to transfer 500 dollars to someone's account as part of a marriage scam promising release of goods from customs if she obliged.

Phuwadit warned people online to be careful talking to people they do not know personally.

This very scam has been going on since the Iraq invasion, we get one every 2 or 3 days, offering everything from millions of dollars in cash to gold bars. Looks like the email scam is winding down and transferring to facebook.

But you have to be stupid to get involved with this as it smells like a scam the moment you open the email, the first line gives it away.

Avoid all of these type of scams, the last one we tracked to Nigeria

FB and other social media outlets has become a tool for all kind of scammers, frauds and conmen to ply their tricks on the gullible and the trusting people of the world, this is only one of the ills and scrooges of bearing your soul, pictures and details out there for every one to see and misuse.....

Whoever devised that con obviously didn't do their home work.

Thai police have no interest in bagging millions from some dubious source abroad. They very effortlessly make tons of dosh on the streets every day or by pulling bundles out of diverse brown envelopes - and all of that without ever having to give out their personal information at all.

An apt choice of victim.

I suppose that the conman thought that a policeman, teacher or government officer would have half a brain and a pronounced sense of greed. AKA an easy mark!

Looks like he'll have to make do with his cut of non motorbike helmet fines etc, to make his fortune instead.

you have no proof of what you said.. Just a childish, sick and ignorant post. People like you should be banned from this forum. Moderators please note. Incidentally, if the police officer saw this, you could be sued for defamation. I have a good mind to send it to him. I have plenty of friends in the police who are  corrupt.
