BANGKOK: -- Many marine parks in the Andaman sea will be closed for 5 months starting May 16th as the monsoon season begins.

Nathaphon Ratanaphan, chief of marine national parks announced the closures yesterday.

The affected parks are include the Surin, Similan, Lanta areas. It also includes the islands of Koh Rork, Koh Ha, Koh Hin Muang - Daeng and the Jao Mai beach national marine park.

The Taratao area will also be shut in the zone that encompasses Koh Ah Dang, Koh Rawee and Koh Lipe.

Nathaphon said that the closures were vital to let nature recover from the impact of tourism as well as to protect the area during the monsoon season.

Environmental impact studies in many areas are set to be carried out during the closure period.
