Transport minister urges more safety of public bus services

BANGKOK: -- Transport Minister Adm Thira Haocharoen on Monday instructed the Land Transport Department’s senior officials to strictly supervise low-ranking officials’ performance in providing conveniences to people and stepping up safety of public bus services on the eve of the New Year celebrations.

Speaking after an inspection of the department and a meeting with its senior officials, he said he had urged them to give a priority to the convenience for people revelling for the New Year holidays and the safety of public bus services.

Senior officials of state agencies concerned had been instructed to strictly oversee public bus drivers to ensure they are not drunk while driving.

Adm Thira said he had called on state agencies supervising key transport and railway stations, ports, and airports to increase the number of officials to keep security and coordinate with an intelligent unit in preventing untoward incidents in risk-prone areas.

He said he had instructed state agencies supervising public buses to accelerate solving black smoke emissions when the New Year holidays went by.

They had been also urged to cope with illegal passenger buses that provide services without safety standard as soon as possible.

He added he had called on the Land Transport Department’s senior officials to work honestly and transparently, and coordinate with other agencies closely in implementing the ministry’s policy.

Glad to hear that one! First time I've ever heard it mentioned by a government official in 4 years.

On the other hand, I never rode a bus but have to drive, should I say manoeuvre around them daily and noticed that bus drivers don't need alcohol to be driving dangerously. :o
