Five arrested Thais could be charged with human trafficking in Malaysia
By The Nation

MAE SOT: -- Five Thais and four Malaysians arrested for allegedly sneaking into Myanmar may be charged with human trafficking, Thairath Online reported.

Thairath claimed the nine people, allegedly led by Abdulloh Maseng, were arrested on Thursday after crossing the border in Tak’s Mae Sot district into Myawaddy.

They were being detained at Myawddy Police Station across the border from Mae Sot.

Thai authorities have alerted the Thai Embassy in Myanmar to provide help to the arrested Thais, Thairath said.

Myanmar police suspect the nine people, who are carrying passports, avoided passing through the immigration checkpoint.

Thairath said Myanmar police suspect one member of the group is Rohingya and the group may smuggle Rohingya into Malaysia.

This is a beautiful event. This kind of thing would never, ever happen in Thailand, where smugglers of all sorts are protected at the highest level. Human smugglers, drug smugglers, slave traders, etc. Those operations tend to be run by the rich, influential, powerful, connected, and those in power. They are all untouchable, and completely and totally above the law.

Muslims aiding muslims? Is this a humanitarian motivated issue or something more nefarious?

Illegal entry into the country is a crime, whatever they intended while there.

So is this less human trafficking but rather helping people escape the genocidal actions of the Burmese military?

Agreed. I was just pointing out that it isn't a given that those being smuggled are going to be exploited.

It could still be both. Desperate people are are more trusting and willing to take bigger risks.

Could not agree more.
