P2P does not rely on DNS where as browsing does? :o Correct? Maybe someone with more knowledge could explain why this odd thing is happening.

Posted
I think I am correct. Also some of the other guys are correct. The DNS is bummed.

I cannot get on www.google.co.th but can with their IP http://72.14.205.104/

:o:D :D

Let me take a wild guess how this happened:

1. Earthquake broke the cables.

2. TOT technicians thought their DNS servers were broke and kicked the (insert your favorite word here) out of them.

3. Someone fixed the cables or re-routed the traffic.

4. Nothing works now because the DNS servers are broke.

From the west coast of North America it's already being routed through Europe to Singapore. The latency reminds me of things around '94.

To bypass DNS, you can enter the IP address of the site you want (if you know it) in your browser instead. For instance, the following is the IP for www.google.com in the US.

http://64.233.161.104/

FYI, this is a good way to get around Google's insistence on redirecting google.com to google.co.th.

If you are using windows, you might be able to get the IP address of the site you want by doing this:

ping www.google.com

If you want to see what kind of delays are occurring as your request goes out to the site you want, try:

tracert www.google.com

(on OS X, Linux and UNIX, it's: traceroute www.google.com)

This will show how long it takes to get to each "hop" along the way.

DNS screw-ups of course might give you the wrong IP or not be able to find it.

It would route to Singapore. Thai Visa is hosted in Singapore. :o You should trace route to the Bangkok Post instead.

I run 2 ISP's at home (TT&T and CAT) and I'm having trouble accessing US sites with both. The problems started early this morning. When I use the ThaiVisa Speed Test I'm still getting high figures (1,700/600).

I'm only guessing, but I'm suspecting that the high number of tourists in Pattaya right now migt be overloading the Internet gateway.

Has anyone else noticed a problem today?

From what I see most of the internet cafesin Pattaya have closed cos of poor connection.

Funnily enough this morning could connect to hotmail etc with no probs up to midday (Thai Time), but TV really slow. Now TV pretty good but cannot connect to anything else!!!

I do get Google (in Bkk, using True), but can't get Gmail or any other email service...

However, I do get Gmail through my mobile phone / GPRS...

It is slow (just as any other day 555)...

I don't get it... hope they'll fix it soon

I know that, but I'm not trying to read the post so that wouldn't make any sense.

It works OK for me here on the eastern seaboard.

:o

clicking on the google.co IP address link gets me Google but incredibly slowly.

Thai Visa, on the other hand, is blazingly fast :D

Thai Visa broke the internet! :o On another note, I think Singtel is part or the complete backbone of many Asia countries. So if you are hosted in Singapore, you will be up.

What i did to fix it ?

Setup your dns Static for exaple to 194.151.228.18 / 194.151.228.34 this are dutch kpn dns servers and google.com works again ! :D

Here some more dns servers ( all from Holland same as me 555 ) maybe from some people others work out better. i think it might be better if evryone use a random pair of dns servers from this list.

Taiwan quake disrupts Internet

SINGAPORE: -- Despite the distance, Tuesday night's earthquake in Taiwan made its presence felt in Singapore.

Internet providers StarHub and SingTel say the earthquake caused disruptions to the undersea cables, resulting in slow internet access to some sites.

Both companies say internet traffic diversion and restoration works are currently underway.

SingTel adds that its undersea cable system with Europe was not affected.

--Channel News Asia

Admin note: Thaivisa.com is hosted on the StarHub network in Singapore, so we should be rather unaffected by this outage. As said, US, Canada could have some routing problems though. I have asked Starhub to check those routing tables.

I cannot get on www.google.co.th but can with their IP http://72.14.205.104/

I cant get to the site via the IP address here in Thailand :o

Yahoo! search seems to be working fine, so can use that in the meantime. But google doesn't work for me either. The ip number above does work but very, very slow response.

According to CNN, its gonna take 2 weeks before these cables are fixed :o

406 folks reading this TV forum now, must be a huge problem.

I'm in the USA for a couple of weeks and call BKK every couple of hours using MCI...

always goes through 100% of the time for the last several years, that is why I use

MCI. Many cheaper ways to call but when I have to call BKK I need a really quick

connection....anyway, for the first time around 0600 BKK time no connection, tried

many many times. I called the MCI problem number and the gal told me because

of the earthquake MCI had to use other ways to connect (satellite ?) I was not aware

MCI used VOIP for my expensive MCI calls. I then went home and SKYPE worked

after about five tries. I am now totally confused............

Also, exactly two years ago... the really big earthquake.....weird.

Same thing here. I'm downloading a torrent file of several GB's with speeds of 100k+ from dozens of sources all around the world, including locations i'm unable to access websites from. That means Thai ISP's are probably just cutting off the most common ports (web, email, ftp, etc) for whatever reason.

yes I too can watch TV from a site in the US with normal speed. However certain websites and apparently port 53 DNS requests don't pass a gateway.

Others have previously mentioned Thailand DNS issues. I switched over to

www.opendns.com

* 208.67.222.222

* 208.67.220.220

which is free and very fast and reliable. Right now of course it doesn't work at all.

That explains a lot.

I can access the forum in Singapore, but the rest of the world is missing.

Hello Everybody

As you may know I am a director of AsianPay.com.

Due to the internet connections out of Thailand I would like to say they we are still here. Although our services are at the moment very limited our offices both here in Chiangmai, Bangkok and Singapore are open. It would appear that all connections are working fine outside of Thailand which has been confirmed by our Singapore office.

Although the situation is out of our control we wish to say sorry for the problems that are accurring.
