Opinions split over fear of war in election wake

Lawmakers and analysts yesterday discussed Prime Minister Hun Sen’s assertion that civil war could occur should the CPP lose in the upcoming election, with opinions being split down the middle.  Academics said the possibility of a war existed should there be unrest following the June 4 elections, however the CNRP insisted that such an occurrence was unlikely as long as the election was free and fair. 
 

“Even without weapons, war can still happen,” economic researcher Ky Sereivath said during the round-table discussion organised by the Royal Academy of Cambodia.  Dr Sereivath used the 2003 riots at the Thai embassy as an example.
 

These were prompted by a local newspaper’s false report of an actress alleging that Angkor Wat belonged to the Thais.  Protesters destroyed the embassy building and attacked Thai businesses such as Thai Airways International and Shin Corp, owned by then-Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
