hackjam
Its almost a year since I got my first Motorcycle 1 year license. I presume my next license will be a 5 year one?? Does anyone have a checklist of what I need/where I need to go to renew my license?
transam
Depends on what visa you have for a 5 year one...
johng
Are you sure its not a 2 year licence ?You will need a "long term" visa or extension of stay to get a 5 year licence no need for medical certificate but you'll most likely have to do reaction and eyesight tests + maybe watch a video ,copies of passport ,visa, and residence certificate. You get the licence from the DLT(Department of Land Transportation) same place you got the 1 year. Moonlover
You will need: 1. A 'resident certificate from your immigration office. 2. Your passport and a copy 3. A medical certificate 4. The expiring licence. Apply for your licence at your local Department of Land Transport. Very easy. My last one only took about 30 mins. No tests. No videos. Areas have their own rules...Just pointing out Ubon's...EVERYONE, even if they have been driving for 50 years has to watch the vid.....I was told it was the directive of the new gov to try and reduce road casualties, which of course it will not....We in the class had to sign a book saying we watched it.... johng
What tests they make you do does seem to be dependent in the alignment if the planets, moon phase and whether the official you have to deal with is having a "bad hair day" !
hackjam
I have retirement visa. What would be the best time/day to go, here in Pattaya? Edited July 16, 2017 by hackjam
jchfriis
If it is not too far, I would take a trip to the DLT office and ask them the questions you are asking here. Then you get it from the horse's mouth.
johng
I have retirement visa. What would be the best time/day to go, here in Pattaya? With retirement visa you should get the 5 year licence The DLT opens at 8am be there for 8am there will already be lots waiting but the que doesn't start till they open the office doors.Remember to have your "certificate of residence" ,copies of passport ,visa and old licence...in Pattaya they most likelywill make you do the eyesight and reaction tests,no need for medical certificate for the 5 year licence. If you go (shortly) after the licence has expired you will (allegedly)gain an extra year. hackjam
OK, went to Immigration today with copies of passport, visa and old license, also needed 2 passport photos, and promptly obtained a residence cert, all told, was there no more than 20 min. So tomorrow I plan to go to DLT, armed with residence cert, old license and Passport. Will I need photocopies also?
johng
Yes take copies...but if you forget one there are a row of shops just outside the DLT entrance..they won't make copies for you inside. How much did immigration charge for the certificate ? stubuzz
Did they specify that the medical cert needs to come form a government hospital?

Yep, since March 2015 the temporary licenses are valid for two years. I suggest the thread starter checks the date on his license. One way or the other something is wrong with the opening post. You would not get a new 5yr license if the temporary is only one year old. I guess the DLT officer didn't even care to look at your license before sending you away for the medical? In Phuket, the requirement for a medical cert has existed for many years. 49 minutes ago, stubuzz said: Did they specify that the medical cert needs to come form a government hospital? Usually any clinic can give you such a medical report.

At the end of June I converted my temporary MC license to the 5yr (in fact almost 6yr). The only thing I "forgot" was the medical. As far as I remember the medical is only waived for the 5yr to 5yr. (just too lazy to look up the rules now)
johng
It seems I remembered incorrectly first 5 year licence does require a medical certificate renewal of 5 years does not...my apologies for giving incorrect information should have referenced this instead of my dodgy memory. thai license Checklist.pdf thai license Checklist.pdf thai license Checklist.pdf Edited July 19, 2017 by johng
hackjam
So went today with Medical cert and got new license, which is 5 years plus-five years and about 9 months, to my date of next birthday after 5 years. A correction to opening post, the first license I got, upon completion of test, was in fact a 2 year temporary license, not 1 year. Sorry for confusion. Total cost was 300 for residency cert, 150 for medical cert and 405 for license=855 Baht.
