Yeah but what your describing isnt just thai cops wandering in and finding his whole network open on his lappy is it. RTP couldnt find their arse with two hands and a flashlight and im pretty sure majority cant read english either.

Of course not.

The FBI managed to find out his identity because he made some mistakes in using a personal e-mail address for a few things.

Once they identified him, they tracked him down to Thailand and busted him, with the help of the Thai Police.

He was tracked for some time yes.

FBI and DEA were part of the raid.

Thanks for posting that. It DOES make for a very interesting read.

Heck, it took the feds almost 5 pages of the complaint just to recite/list all the different cars, houses, bank accounts, cryptocurrency holdings, etc. that this guy and his wife had, spread out over quite a few different countries, not just in Thailand. He truly was an international (illegal) financier -- albeit now, a dead one.

I'm kind of thinking, the feds probably would have liked to interview and grill this guy at length, if they had been able to get their hands on him for the longer-term.  But as the saying goes, dead men tell no tales.

But according to the complaint, this guy was hardly acting alone. The complaint says there were 8-10 people working on his site and getting paid salaries for doing so. Wonder what's happened to the others???

Contrary to that I think if the Feds wanted to take him they could have day one, but maybe they would rather his mouth was shut. They surely could have talked to him even if Thailand wouldn't release him yet. They probably did and didn't like what they heard.

What you really think he wasnt hacked? You think I guy of this magnitude leaves his computer and servers open and unsecured? Yeah right

What i read from a new source was that the Canadian authories found the server for alphabay but couldnt access it, (like they did with hansa market and run it for a month and collected everyone's secret data lol), so apparently there was dea/fbi agent present during the raid and they powered off the server and a manual override was needed to stay it again, so they timed the raid when he would on his computer unencrypted trying to get the site back online.

I can believe that easier then a guy of this magnitude being stupid security wise.

Ya there great debate online about that right now.

Most people think the government has a tor exploit they wont reveal (obviously they wouldnt) and theres also a court case that got dropped recently because the authories wouldnt reveal how they caught a guy on tor downloading illegal porn. Would make the most sense they have an exploit as they also took down and controlled another large market at the same. Something unheard of on the anonymous web.

But if you wanna believe the fbi/cia/dea  (as very few tech people do), according to them, when he first made the site he was dumb enough to use his real email address and when people used forgotten password it was sent from him registered email he used, then according to them that email was joined to PayPal so all was so easy. Many people are working hard trying to verify this but no proof as of yet.

But they still took 3+ years to bust him. I guess they were in no rush?

Yes, but he did not keep anything encrypted. They found his net worth statement detailing all his assets of 22-23 million. It wasn't even password protected or anything apparently.

Read a few articles, this guy gave an interview back in 2015 about AlphaBay, stating that he lived offshore, in a safe location, nothing to worry about.

He totally did not see this coming. That's why he left things unprotected. He was more interested in his website being better than his competitors rather than protecting himself.

Had an IQ of 142.

Yeah... not a word of how a 25-year-old, seemingly healthy young man mysteriously died in custody.

With so much money involved anything could happen . Anyone know what happened to the body ? I would think the relatives wanted the body back to Canada, or maybe just a cremation in Thailand and no more evidence.

Last i read it his body was getting autopsy in Thailand but havent heard more.

But I imagine the USA will/have been very involved and they would be around to ensure said story is true because there some mentally ill people that think everything is a hoax
