BANGKOK — An Asian black bear that severely mauled a man is unhappy and unhealthy after trading confinement at a monastery for a government wildlife center.

Kaew, a 6-year-old female bear, has not adapted well to confinement at the Khao Kho Wildlife Captive Breeding Centre, wildlife department spokesman Sompot Maneerat said Friday.

Why not just free the poor bast*rd back into the wild? The conditions are absolutely horrific, not surprised it's unhealthy and unhappy.

Before or after he tried to eat the @#$%^&?

On a serious note (and meant as a rethorical question): doesn't have Thailand any animal rights- laws, that prevent a bear to be held under such garstly circumstances?

Return her to the monastery then. Doubt she would be able to live in the wild on her own after years of captivity.

Man's inhumanity towards animals never fails to sicken me. We are a scourge on this planet.

And yet you'll probably eat meat or fish today , like all days.

It's kinda normal on this planet. The living creatures tend to eat other living creatures for living. The real issue is needless cruelty.

The bear got sick off eating Lao Khao infected flesh.

#1 the bear should not be held the way he is being held & I'm a guy that thinks shooting  99% of the stray dogs in Thailand would be a good thing.

#2, well it goes to show, that there truly is no telling what kind of trouble a drunk can get himself into.

#3 Here's a Happy Bear in captivity.

I see a few clumps of cooked rice strewn about the filthy floor of a tiny prison cell. No wonder that poor creature is depressed and disturbed. It all amounts to severe animal abuse no matter how much "compassion" the self-styled "caretakers" claim in their human arrogance.

The vast majority of bear species - as every person with even the most rudimentary education knows - are pure carnivores. I am not at all surprised the bear took the opportunity to get its paws on some some fresh meat when the "source" stupidly presented itself.

Why do Thai people insist that every animal they keep must be as fond of rice as they are anyway? It's sheer ignorance - or probably indifference.  Or both.

"Thai animan differen fom  farang animan.. Lub ly too mutt." Not so!

Free that bear and avoid any temples that keep caged animals. It's a disgusting practice - especially for people who like to call themselves Buddhists.

Because rice is cheap.

Can anticipate all the bearologists in the country descending on this one spot

Maybe just animal lovers who hate to see animals mistreated.

Change starts with yourself.

It's weird that people always react to something like this poor bear , but ignore that the chicken or pig they're gonna eat comes out of one the CP's  holocaust factories .

I doubt if me becoming vegetarian would change a damn thing, any more than my bit towards recycling, especially in Thailand The planet is hugely overpopulated and polluted, and we're gobbling up resources like there's no tomorrow.

By not eating meat or fish , I saved thousands of animals .

But I can't save this bear from its dredful "owners" .

Some of those resources are pasture land etc to feed the beef.

Sorry we have to eat nice cows & all that namby-pamby BS, but that is life.

Yes, the bear should have never been taken in by anybody & just left in the wild.

Yes the drunk got some "Som nam naa".

Man has has been eating meat since we were Neanderthals. The world has yet to stop turning.

BTW....If you ever find yourself towards the south end of Walking Street in Pattaya, try the Kobe steak at the Right Spot Inn restaurant. Best steak in Thailand!

Francophone next door has the best chicken kebabs I've ever had.

I doubt that. You've saved not one. It was slaughtered anyway as somebody else bought its meat. Only if a vast majority of the world's people turn to vegetarianism will there be any tangible effect on the meat industry and consequently how many animals are raised for human consumption. I just don't see that moment arrive anytime soon.

Not everyone has their bear to cross and  this idiot just got lucky. . Lucky bear too, to have such  comfortable living quarters.

The abbot and his monks should be proud. So should the men in charge of Khao Kho Wildlife Captive Breeding Centre.

I think this may be an Asian Sun bear, and they are considered "Vulnerable" by the IUCN.

I beg to differ.  Bears are omnivorous.  They eat both animal and vegetable food.  .One of the vegetable foods they love is berrys.  Another species called Humans are also omnivorous.
