A Bangkok female taxi driver has won an educational institute's top mother award for her selfless devotion to her two sons after her husband's untimely death.

Phongsri Changkhit from Lopburi had married Chaiyot Kert-euam and the couple had had two sons.

But seventeen years ago Chaiyot died from cancer.

However, having to be both mum and dad to the boys and find a way to pay for everything did not daunt Phongsri.

She decided that the best way to do that was to work as many hours as she could as a taxi driver - a profession still seen as the domain of men but was especially so in 2000.

Phongsri told Daily News that she would get up at 6am and take her boys to school in the taxi before working all day then taking them home in the evening before starting work again later when their homework was done.

She would often not finish driving her cab until midnight.

But she was determined to see her sons get their degrees and get an advantage in life.

Her eldest Ekasit Kert-Euam is now working at Thammasat Chalermprakiat Hospital while her youngest son Nathaphon is in the fourth year of an Arts college degree.

Her husband had died when Nathaphon was just four years old.

Phongsri was honored by the Thanyaburi Institute of Technology who were informed about her devotion and selfless attitude and presented her with the Top Mum award this week.
