Civil servants to get $12 for Pchum Ben

Featured Replies

The government has issued a sub-decree that all civil servants will this year receive about $12 each for the upcoming Pchum Ben festival. According to the decree on Friday, the allowance will be issued by September 15, before the public holiday festival that stretches from September 19 to 21.

“This allowance is provided for each civil servant, and one time only,” the decree said. Civil Service Ministry spokesman Sar Samedy said yesterday that in the past the government had provided such bonuses to civil servants for the Khmer New Year, but thanks to continued economic growth, it decided to do it for this year’s Pchum Ben festival as well.

During the Khmer New Year in April, Prime Minister Hun Sen said the government spent about 30 billion riel, about $7 million, to support civil servants and armed forces with the $12 allowance. There are about 200,000 civil servants in the country, including 38,543 at the national level and 162,475 at sub-national levels.
