webfact
BMA expedites construction of drainage tunnel BANGKOK, 21 August 2017 (NNT) – The Deputy Governor of Bangkok has followed up on the construction of the Nong Bueng drainage tunnel, which despite delays is planned to be a major improvement to the capital’s drainage capabilities. Deputy Bangkok Governor Chakkaphan Piew-ngam yesterday traveled to the construction site of the Nong Bueng drainage tunnel in Prawes district of Bangkok. The tunnel is directly connected to the Chao Phraya River but is currently up to a year behind schedule after starting in January 2016. Work on the channel has been slowed by obstacles posed by utilities systems and planning hiccups. Contractors have been told to step up their work to ensure the tunnel, which is currently only 8-15 percent complete, will be finished on schedule in December 2019. The 5 meter wide, 9.4 meter long tunnel is to have 7 receptacle stations and 1 release station. Its completion will remedy flood problems in Prawes, Suan Luang, Bangna and Phrakanong districts. -- nnt 2017-08-

ChrisY1
Started January 2016 and only 8%-15% done......! Sounds as though extensions of time claims coming very soon....
yellowboat
Is there any sewage treatment connected to this or is it just to avoid flooding ? Hope they do not dump any more harmful things into the river.
Estrada
Another mathematically challenged reporter: "The 5 meter wide, 9.4 meter long tunnel". Obviously the tunnel is much longer than 9.4metres. Probably should read 9.4Kms.
Narratio
Started Jan 2016 so, after 20 months it is 12 months behind schedule? Amazing Thailand.

I worked on the Great Man Made River Project in Libya and we were laying around 1km/day of 4 metre diameter pipe with mainly Thai labour. Total 6,500km of 4metre dia. concrete and steel pipe. These guys have only laid around 10% or 950meters. However, knowing the way things work here, the boss got the 10% upfront money and bought himself a brand new Mercedes S-Class, a new house and a mistress. He then found out that he did not have enough money to cover the work in order to receive the first progress payment.
