Police have arrested 12 Malaysians over the alleged assault and robbery of a Taiwanese YouTuber at a condominium in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur, after investigators said the victim may have been targeted for carrying foreign currency.

Victim suffered injuries and RM35,000 losses

Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus said police received a report from a Japanese man on 1 August. The Taiwanese victim was allegedly assaulted and robbed, suffering injuries and losses estimated at RM35,000.

Investigators believe the suspects learned that the victim was carrying a large amount of cash in foreign currencies. Fadil said this was thought to have triggered the alleged crime. Police have not disclosed further details about how the group obtained that information.

Special operation led to arrests in three areas

A special operation involving the Cheras district police headquarters' Criminal Investigation Division and the Kuala Lumpur Criminal Investigation Department led to arrests in Selangor, Negri Sembilan and Kuala Lumpur. The 12 suspects comprise eight men and four women aged between 26 and 48.

Seven suspects were released on police bail on 7 August after giving statements. The remaining five were remanded until 13 August to assist the investigation. Police are still searching for another suspect and have asked anyone with information to come forward.

The case is being investigated under Section 170 of the Penal Code, which concerns impersonating a public servant, and Section 395 for gang robbery. The arrests are part of an ongoing investigation and do not establish guilt.

The case is a reminder for visitors and foreign residents to avoid carrying or openly discussing large amounts of cash. Use secure payment methods where practical, keep valuables out of sight and be cautious about sharing travel, accommodation or financial details with new acquaintances or online contacts. If someone claims to be an official, ask for identification and verify their authority before handing over money or documents. Anyone facing an immediate threat should move to a safe place and contact Malaysian police. Preserve messages, transaction records and other evidence, and report losses promptly so investigators can act while information is still current.
