MOPH warns against dengue fever after flood water subsides

BANGKOK, 23 August 2017 (NNT) – The Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) has instructed officials in flood-affected areas to be on alert for an outbreak of dengue fever after flood waters have subsided.

MOPH Permanent Secretary Sophon Mekthon said that the flood situations in many areas began to return to normal, with flooding reported only in six provinces. After the flood water subsides there will be a large number of mosquito breeding spots. According to the Bureau of Epidemiology, from 1 January to 15 August 2017 the number of dengue patients was recorded at 17,297 persons.

He asked the public to actively eliminate mosquito breeding spots. The best way is to clean their houses, throw away garbage around the house once each week and turn over all water containers to prevent mosquitoes from laying eggs.

Dengue fever is transmitted from the bite of an Aedes mosquito infected with a dengue virus. Symptoms of dengue fever include severe joint and muscle pain, swollen lymph nodes, headaches, fever, exhaustion, and rashes.
