I would like to understand exactly why a phone is needed/required for school? Can you elaborate some? I could perhaps understand a computer (laptop) but a phone....  Hmmmmmm

To communicate with the teacher.   Receive homework assignments, etc.

Also my the kids need a phone so I can find them back after a school day, at a school that's the size of the Pentagon.

Why can't you just meet them at the same place every day?

I don't understand why they need a phone to communicate with the teacher?  Why can't they just use their mouths?

So the teacher texts or calls each student? And the homework assignments can't be written on the blackboard?

To find your kids after school doesn't sound like the phone is really a school requirement.

...and to think I went to grade/high school for 12 years without a phone..... it must had been a miracle? He77 back in my days a calculator wasn't even allowed to be used in school....  I guess that is why I learned math.

I don't think it is necessary either but as said they are used for homework assignments and class line groups for school projects etc (they wouldn't let me join the group on my phone so I could let my son could check there)

Also they use them for research etc in class. The students hand their phones in to the home room teacher during class and get them back for lunch break and after school and when they are needed in class for the lesson. My son looked on with a class mate in the beginning but it was obvious to me that I was just putting off the inevitable.

I didn't think my 13 yr old needed or was necessarily responsible enough to own one as I drove him to school (we did and still do have a meeting place for pick up) and still really don't.

For the record my 4 sons are only allowed to play games on devices on non-school nights for a few hours.

Wow.. this has turned into an 'anti-phone' debate...

The Phone / iPad etc is an excellent tool and can be used for great convenience, learning and safety when used correctly.

The Smart phone is here to stay, use it as a tool to help you rather than fight development.

The fact that some children have phones is useful for many parents...'find my phone' or other location devices act an additional layer of security.

But, the real reason kids have phones these days....?.... simply because 'the other kids' have phones these days, they use them to communicate and keep up with each other...  and there's not much wrong with that either... they don't need it... but hey, do you need 3 credit cards, or a pair of sunglasses or that car in Bkk ????... welcome to the concept of luxury items, the phone isn't an essential item, but it makes life easier for us and kids....

It's all down to decent parenting and intelligent time management.....

Now, all of that said, some comments appear to come from people with no contact with anyone of a younger generation - its astonishing how quickly tech develops and it will leave you behind as you / we age, which is fine if you don't care, but I don' quite think its ok to criticize those who've embraced these additional conveniences....

BTW: the phones are particularly useful when stuck in a queue behind hordes of queue jumping Chinese tourists !!!..  we can bury our nose in the phone instead of speaking up !...

The Mainland Chinese though - they are specialists at pretending they haven't seen the queue...  well, either that or they are so completely and innocently ignorant of anything going on beyond 6" of their nose that they fail to recognize a queue... but, I don't think its this... I do believe the behavior of the many Mainland Chinese folk we see here in Thailand is borne of a simple sense.. one of 'fear of missing out'... they can't be last, can't miss out, the sense appears almost overwhelming at a subconscious level..

Heh. That's like telling two kittens to be in the same place at the same time every day.  :)  But more crucially: I or the Mrs. can't be there at the same time every day due to other commitments that don't happen regularly at the same time every day.

Then a mobile phone is a lot more convenient for everyone compared to making the kids sit for half an hour or more at the same spot, when they could be playing, reading in the library, doing homework, etc.

Beats me, but when the kid told us she needed LINE because of this we checked with the teacher, who said that it would be good to have, yes.

Luckily, my son's school communicates with the parents and not the students via Line, so not to force us to buy a device unnecessarily.

Also, over the last 2 years my son has gone from having a laptop, gamepad and access to an Android TV device to being 100% offline, because of not doing what he was told. I seriously recommend parents to be proactive with following what their kids are viewing online.

I find this refreshing and believe a device can be used responsibly.

My kids have limited screen time just as they are allowed a little candy and even a coke very occasionally.

But the first punishment is no games for the weekend as they are usally allowed an hour a night on non-school nights.

Living in a poor farming area the kids only have 10K Samsungs, used for sefies, watching porn n games. They too have thick parents who say they are educational.

They probably say whatever sounds good to justify them not having to parent.
