Burnham Promises Relentless Action On Small Boat Crossings

Andy Burnham has pledged that his government will be “relentless” in efforts to reduce the number of people arriving in the UK on small boats.

Speaking in Dover, the prime minister said progress had been made and that the authorities were “changing the whole approach” to tackle people-smuggling networks. He said enforcement officers working against gangs had been doubled on both sides of the English Channel.

Burnham said many people wanted the issue addressed and argued that tackling smuggling had to go alongside providing “safe routes” for those who need protection. He added that offering lawful options would remove part of the appeal for people involved in the gangs.

Ceuta Pushes Migration Talks Back Into Focus

Burnham’s remarks came as political debate over the UK’s illegal migration policy resurfaced following the arrival of tens of thousands of migrants who swam into the Spanish exclave of Ceuta on Thursday.

He said that 98% of those who made the journey to the African territory had been returned to Morocco, which he said had dealt with the immediate situation. He added there was a wider issue involving the Schengen area and the UK’s relationship with it, and said he would want regular dialogue with the European Union on those matters.

Enforcement Effort Scales Up

The Home Office said that the number of National Crime Agency (NCA) officers targeting smuggling gangs facilitating small boat crossings had risen to almost 800 from 376 at the start of 2025. Burnham also said there had been a similar doubling of French enforcement officers.

When asked whether he wanted to change the tone of the debate on small boats, Burnham said he wanted to “deal with the issue rather than play politics with the issue”. He said the public did not want the border to appear uncontrolled, adding that control needed to be restored while support continued for those who genuinely need it.

The Home Office also said on Sunday that there had been nearly 300 arrests of smuggling gang members last year, alongside the seizure of more than 1,100 small boats and engines. It said equipment confiscated by the NCA could have been used to help 72,000 more people come illegally to the UK, although the BBC said it was unable to independently verify the claim.

“Clearly, progress is being made, but we’re not complacent,” Burnham said.

Crossings, Returns And Wider Migration Data

Since Burnham became prime minister a fortnight ago, the number of migrants arriving in the UK on small boats has surpassed 2,000. He pointed to a Saturday figure of 326 people crossing the Channel.

Authorities say more people attempt the crossing in summer when conditions improve. Home Office figures show that small boat crossings so far this year are down around 43% compared with the same period in 2025.

Small boat crossings have become the most common way for people to be detected entering the UK illegally since 2020, and the topic has increasingly shaped wider arguments over immigration. Home Office figures also show the number of crossings has been on a downward trend since it peaked in 2022.

In May, the Office for National Statistics reported that net migration to the UK fell to 171,000 last year. That was almost half the figure for 2024 and the lowest level since 2012, with the drop attributed to fewer people arriving from outside the EU for work and study.

The UK is not the world's Salvation Army, (although it seems to be trying for that award...). We are a sovereign country, not a charity. We should leave the ECHR and use the Navy to physically push back these boats, just as Thailand does with the Rohingya. The latter now completely bypass Thailand in their boats and head for Muslim Malaysia.

Tought action may seem c ruek, but it's better for the UK in the longer-term. Boat people will soon get the message that they are not welcome - the UK is full!

The ECHR has nothing to do with the conventions that cover the laws of the sea!

If I didn't know you better Ray, I'd think it was finally dawning on you that this is actually a massive problem.

How to stop it? Simple. Remove the incentive.

Detain them on arrival and put them in detention centres. Similar to the IDC in Bangkok, but less luxurious. Tents in a field surrounded by barbed wire/chain link fences would do. A few months in there and they'll be begging to leave.

New arrivals would stop overnight. News would get out, nobody is going to pay hundreds/thousands of pounds and risk a channel crossing for 6 months in a cold field on Dartmoor.

As long as they know a free hotel, iPhone, 3 buffets a day and eventually social housing and a life on benefits awaits, they will continue to come.

All it takes is the will. Trump proved that.

Your comment was making interesting reading until you fell into the trap of believing everything you read on social media with regards to what asylum seekers get.

Your idea is a bit more severe than mine. I say put them to work. Let them pay for what they get. Make a 40 hour week job part of the requirements for asylum applications.

There are many councils crying out for help. Street cleaning, graffiti removal, pot hole repairs, etc.

Kill two birds with one stone.

Put a tag on them to keep trace too incase they try to do a runner or cause problems. When work is finished, back to accommodation until work the next day.

Either way, there needs to be a deterrent. My suggestion would be to put all asylum claimants to work as part of their application. Salaries pay for their bed and board, the rest they keep. Also, regulate their movements when they are not at work.

I agree with some of what you've said on here. But offering them paid work is not a deterrant in my opinion. In fact that could have the oposite effect.

And I'd go further than regulating their movement. I don't think any illegal migrant should be free to roam UK streets until fully processed and accepted. Whether they are detained in the UK or abroad doesn't matter - they must be detained to protect our citizens from the most dangerous migrants.

If someone had told me 30 years ago that in 2026 we'll have thousands of young men from Somalia, Eritrea, Afghanistan, Iran etc.,, undocumented and unchecked allowed to mix with the general public in the UK, I'd have told them they were nuts.

In his Press Conference today Nigel Farage held up a detailed plan on how to defeat the Boats. Most of the information regarding the Military Aid that will be rolled out was written by ex Senior Military chiefs who know how intercept and drive back the Boat's which in there opinion is doable. He drew on how Austaralia stopped there boats within 2 weeks by using the military to tow the migrants to Indonesia and leave them there, the boats stopped after 2 weeks. Harsh but they did it. We have thrown over a Billion to france to stop them leaving French ports. It doesn't matter how much money our government throws to them the Boats will keep coming because we are weak and a soft touch. The gangs are always ahead they have simply started moving the invaders from as far as Normandy away from usual beaches patroled by the French police. The Royal marines are trained to intercept and detain all shipping even if it means wrenching them from a rubber boat they will do.

Reform says it would use Royal Navy to stop small boats

The party's home affairs spokesman Zia Yusuf says it would be the "largest military operation in the English Channel since World War Two”.

This "plan" is unworkable without French cooperation and, even in the unlikely event that was forthcoming, it is very debatable that it is operationally achievable. Would Reform instruct the Royal Navy to blockage one of the world's busiest waterways? Moreover, by your own admission, the traffickers are often one step ahead.

It is almost inevitable that France would want nothing to do with this hare-brained idea. What happens then? According to Yusuf, the Royal Marines will invade France! And these people think that they are fit to run the country!!!

Ha ha ha, Farage is a genius!! As usual no thought behind it, just shout really loudly and the Barra Marras will vote for him.

Even the Tories (they of the Rwanda plan) think it is ludicrous.

Imo better to thought of as a fool rather than someone completely devoid of any semblance of morality but, hey, that's just my opinion. No doubt hate-filled individuals such as yourself disagree.

If you can't see the problem with being complicit with the use of concentration camps and its' likely consequences then I genuinely pity you.

No one said we will invade France, we will return migrants to French beaches or Belgium beaches where they sailed from. Its time we stopped allowing this to happen. Woooooah, almost one attack per day foiled!! Iranians risking their lives to come over by boat and attack us once a day. I mean they could just fly, but makes more sense for operatives to come in by boat.

Of course you have a link for these 200 foiled attacks? You are quite forgetful on the link front so no doubt it was accidental. Can you share the link please?

Oh, and a link to Farage meeting the French government about his fanciful boat plan while you're at it.

Thanks!

Looing back on the Broken Britain thread i did sat 13 thousand arrived under Burnahm i can hold my hands up and say i got it wrong it should have been nearly a Thousand in 1 week. On the Maritime law you keep reminding me i remember the Icelandic Cod Wars when Icelandic gun boats harrased and potentially could have sunk British trawlers in international waters in the 70s. Where was the law then ?

The number of crossings are down on the year.

They were zero when the Tories first came to power.

The historical records do not support your biased statement. There have always been migrants arriving across the English Channel. The historical numbers were insignificant. 2018 is the year when the numbers started to increase and it coincides with the tougher measures applied at ports of entry. In effect, a large number of migrants changed their mode of unauthorized entry. Unlike being stopped at Calais and at other ports, where transport vehicles could be stopped and unloaded entry by small boat allows easier access to the UK and it is facilitated by UK based activist migrant groups who encourage, aid and abet the unauthorized entries. The number of crossings at the start of 2020 was below 2000.

The migrant crossings surged in 2022 after the Truss and Sunak administrations were blocked from deporting these migrants. Legislation was blocked in Parliament and by the courts and activist groups rallied in support of open borders. The crisis continued with the Starmer administration.

Neither of these things appear in Google searches, so asking for you to provide evidence to support your claim is completely acceptable.

You really should read up on maritime law. There are many definitions of different vessels. It's generally to do with maritime safety.

An invasion is exactly what it would be if the French didn't agree to Reform's proposal, something which appears unlikely.

I would have thought that foreign agents operating in the UK are more likely to have arrived as diplomats and/or be already in the country and be sponsored by foreign governments, rather than arrive via dinghy.

The reason that I slate Reform's policy proposals are because they are ill-conceived, ill thought-out and very unlikely to succeed.

High level operatives would normally come in under diplomatic channels, no one is putting them on dinghies where they have no equipment, could drown, be arrested etc.

Anyway however they do it they have had 200 ATTACKS FOILED in just the last year alone! So they can't be very good. Can't wait for the link to these 200 foilings, I am sure it's coming soon.

About these meetings between Farage and France, did anyone tell France?

The French interior ministry said: "This would constitute a violation of French sovereignty, as well as a violation of the law of the sea and international law."

A spokesperson for the department added that measures agreed with the UK, as well as "operations deployed at the local level", had already led to a reduction in crossings so far this year compared to the same period in 2025.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cr59qyy4l5yo

Looking forward to a link where I can read about this meeting you said took place.
