Canada Erects Large 'Lake Ontario' Sign in Jab at Trump

Ontario Premier Doug Ford has responded to US President Donald Trump’s move to rename Lake Ontario by installing a large sign along Canada’s shoreline stating: “Lake Ontario. Now and Always.”

Ford unveiled the sign while criticising Trump’s decision, saying the lake had long been known as Lake Ontario and would continue to be called that regardless of US actions. He said Trump’s renaming was driven by dissatisfaction with Ontario and Canada “standing up for ourselves”.

The dispute follows an executive order Trump signed on Thursday, which seeks to change the lake’s name in the United States to “Lake America”. The president also shared a series of AI-generated videos on social media, including footage depicting a lake sign being overturned and replaced with one reading “Welcome to Lake America”.

Trade Row Spurs Fresh Name Dispute

The latest exchange of remarks came after trade talks between the two countries collapsed. The US introduced new 50% tariffs on $20bn (C$28bn) worth of Canadian goods.

Canada is set to respond with “dollar for dollar” counter-tariffs next month, aimed at matching the US measures.

Trump said his decree took effect immediately when he signed the order and posted content online to reinforce the new name. Canadian officials have dismissed the renaming effort, arguing that other countries are not obliged to adopt changes made unilaterally by the US.

Ford Frames Renaming As Insult To Canada

Standing in front of the newly installed sign, Ford said the message was intended to ensure Trump, or others, “forget[s]”, adding that the lake is “Lake Ontario, now and forever”.

The row mirrors earlier comments by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who had said “things must be called by their name”, and that the lake is called Lake Ontario “today and forever”.

Ford’s remarks also referenced the executive order’s effect on how the US recognises geographic features. Under the order, the US Department of the Interior has 30 days to update the name through the Geographic Names Information Service, which serves as the official repository of domestic geographic names in the US.

Great Lakes Origins Cited As Ontario And New York Border

Lake Ontario is the smallest of the Great Lakes and lies on the border between the Canadian province of Ontario and the US state of New York.

The names of four Great Lakes—Ontario, Huron, Michigan and Erie—are derived from Indigenous words, while Lake Superior is named after an anglicised French term.

Trump’s executive order is not the first time his administration has attempted to rename a shared body of water. When Trump entered the White House in 2025, he signed an order changing the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. Mexico rejected the change, saying a single country cannot rename an international water body shared by multiple nations.

That earlier move also led to a legal dispute involving Mexico and Google after the company used “Gulf of America” in its maps service. As a result, Google Maps users in the United States see “Gulf of America”, while users in Mexico see “Gulf of Mexico”. In other countries, the name appears as “Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)”.

The Lake America stunt is not aimed at Canada as a nation it is aimed at Ontario as a province where most of the industry is.

Doug Ford the premiere of Ontario (btw a conservative not like Carney who is a liberal) is much more of a lose cannon than Carney.

Ford is the guy who first threaten to switch off the power to New England, then stopped buying US liquor, and lastly said Trump was the kind of kid at school who would first steal your lunch money, then you hat, and then your sports shoes.

Probably the last bit that irked Trump.

As for Canada's trade balance. Let's not forget it was US industry that set up in Ontario because it was cheaper.

Once the Democrats are back in office they will roll back all of this silliness enacted by the megalomaniacal narcissist Donald Trump.

You mean open the borders back up and bring DEI back. Roll back all the common sense. Open back up all the fraudulent day care and medical facilities.

Can't wait.

I kinda like Lake America. I also kinda liked the Queen Charlotte's. Here's an interesting Canadian map of all the names Canadians have changed. Click on the dot and see the fun: https://open.canada.ca/openmap/en.html#f6c03e72-2a20-4b41-812d-1dfc327cb287

Apparently, "Today and forever" don't mean much in the Great White North.

And it's interesting how Carney quietly hired a Democrat operative for his staff. It's almost as if he's trying to interfere in the midterms.

It appears to be a first for Canada to have a COO in the PMO, but it’s who the woman is that is truly interesting.

This is where it gets really interesting, though, because Johnson, the woman advising Carney on how to deal with Donald Trump, is an American and a registered Democrat with ties to the campaigns of Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.

I wouldn't expect too much mercy from Trump.

Lol. Open border is a GOP myth. Can anyone honestly believed that borders are not actively guarded and secured need to have their head checked.

Bessent is a complete numbskull and so is Lutnick. I feel kind of bad for Greer, because he strikes me as a pretty smart guy who was negotiating with the Canadians in good faith. Lutnick is his boss, and so he can't contradict what Lutnick says, but I think it's pretty clear Lutnick did try to pressure the Canadians at the 11th hour with challenges to sovereignty over their future trade relationships with other countries. But Carney is a smart guy and it's not beyond belief that Carney planned to pull the plug from the very start. The idiot Lutnick walked right into opening an off ramp for Carney. You don't get chosen to run two of the G-7's central banks by playing spin the bottle. While the US has plenty of pain to cause Canada through trade barriers, Trump is way out of league against Carney. And that's obvious to all. If Trump gets real experienced professional advisors (and ones he would listen to) maybe that could change.

Actually, I like the name Lake America. Since this lake borders both the U.S. and Canada it would be natural to have a name both could share. Its really all about inclusion which the canuks are big on.

Ah yes. Continue to erase any history of those before Euro scum arrived and took what ever they wanted.

It will always be Lake Ontario, just like it will always be the Gulf of Mexico.

That's correct for the majority of the world, unfortunately not for the MAGA cronies and their entourage

And Donny's childish act is only his pubic hair signature (from his birthday card to his bestie and fellow alleged pedo Jeffrey Epstein) on a piece of paper, of import only to his captured cult.

The name comes from a Wendat Indian word ontari'io, which means "big, beautiful lake". That's a lovely name.

The Worst President Ever will have all of his childish or self aggrandizing acts erased once he passes, and ideally that right soon.

Trump is simply a clown, whose schtick has appeal only to losers who try to live vicariously through him in a desperate bid to salvage some meaning from their banal lives.

All that and you didn’t change a thing.

It’s still Lake America . And always will be.

They can keep their sign, in Canada.. It will never be displayed on US soil. Thanks to the greatest President in history, Donald Trump. Your President. Now say his name.

You must have about 3 post of jibberish you keep rotating through. They’re all the same.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent saw assets in his hedge fund, Key Square Capital Management, plunge by roughly 90% from nearly $5 billion down to around $500 million due to inconsistent performance and unsuccessful bets. - Times on Suday August this year.

Again, that's nonsense.

Annual Performance Summary (2016–2024)

2016+13.0% 🟢Inception Year. Scored massive wins by successfully shorting the British pound post-Brexit and betting heavily on the post-election U.S. stock and dollar rally.

2017-7.0% 🔴Loss. Caught on the wrong side of global currency fluctuations; asset size peaked at $5.1 billion this year.

2018 Negative / Breakeven 🔴Loss. Underperformed macro peers. Anchor investor George Soros withdrew his $2 billion capital stack via a prearranged deal, starting an AUM decline.

2019 Flat / Minor Losses 📉Continued flat performance amidst a massive broader equity market bull run.

2020 Negative / Breakeven 🔴Loss. Struggled to navigate the sudden macroeconomic pivot and volatility of the COVID-19 pandemic crash and subsequent recovery.

2021Negative / Breakeven 🔴Loss. Hurt by contrarian macro positions, including unsuccessful bets against rising global oil prices and the Japanese yen.

2022+29.0% 🟢Major Rebound. Strongly outperformed the broader market (S&P 500 fell 18%) by shorting fixed-income assets and low-revenue tech stocks on the thesis that inflation would persist.

2023 +Double-Digits 🟢Gains. Maintained positive traction, though total firm assets under management (AUM) bottomed out at roughly $577 million by December due to historical investor redemptions.

2024+Double-Digits 🟢Gains. Capped off a strong three-year performance streak by riding the "Trump Trade" and betting heavily on domestic U.S. assets.

Overall lifetime performance of the Key Square Capital fund was positive and in the plus, the wins were bigger than the losses.
