Canada Erects Large 'Lake Ontario' Sign in Jab at Trump

Ontario Premier Doug Ford has responded to US President Donald Trump’s move to rename Lake Ontario by installing a large sign along Canada’s shoreline stating: “Lake Ontario. Now and Always.”

Ford unveiled the sign while criticising Trump’s decision, saying the lake had long been known as Lake Ontario and would continue to be called that regardless of US actions. He said Trump’s renaming was driven by dissatisfaction with Ontario and Canada “standing up for ourselves”.

The dispute follows an executive order Trump signed on Thursday, which seeks to change the lake’s name in the United States to “Lake America”. The president also shared a series of AI-generated videos on social media, including footage depicting a lake sign being overturned and replaced with one reading “Welcome to Lake America”.

Trade Row Spurs Fresh Name Dispute

The latest exchange of remarks came after trade talks between the two countries collapsed. The US introduced new 50% tariffs on $20bn (C$28bn) worth of Canadian goods.

Canada is set to respond with “dollar for dollar” counter-tariffs next month, aimed at matching the US measures.

Trump said his decree took effect immediately when he signed the order and posted content online to reinforce the new name. Canadian officials have dismissed the renaming effort, arguing that other countries are not obliged to adopt changes made unilaterally by the US.

Ford Frames Renaming As Insult To Canada

Standing in front of the newly installed sign, Ford said the message was intended to ensure Trump, or others, “forget[s]”, adding that the lake is “Lake Ontario, now and forever”.

The row mirrors earlier comments by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who had said “things must be called by their name”, and that the lake is called Lake Ontario “today and forever”.

Ford’s remarks also referenced the executive order’s effect on how the US recognises geographic features. Under the order, the US Department of the Interior has 30 days to update the name through the Geographic Names Information Service, which serves as the official repository of domestic geographic names in the US.

Great Lakes Origins Cited As Ontario And New York Border

Lake Ontario is the smallest of the Great Lakes and lies on the border between the Canadian province of Ontario and the US state of New York.

The names of four Great Lakes—Ontario, Huron, Michigan and Erie—are derived from Indigenous words, while Lake Superior is named after an anglicised French term.

Trump’s executive order is not the first time his administration has attempted to rename a shared body of water. When Trump entered the White House in 2025, he signed an order changing the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. Mexico rejected the change, saying a single country cannot rename an international water body shared by multiple nations.

That earlier move also led to a legal dispute involving Mexico and Google after the company used “Gulf of America” in its maps service. As a result, Google Maps users in the United States see “Gulf of America”, while users in Mexico see “Gulf of Mexico”. In other countries, the name appears as “Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)”.

Anything that can be done to defy America's top pig is a good thing for Humanity. On a daily basis the man humiliates himself and does things that previously would never be considered acceptable for the leader of a once great nation.

Not even. There is no law giving the US President the legal right to unilaterally rename international bodies of water. He can force the executive Branch of government to use his made-up names ... Gulf of America, Department of war but it has no effect on the rest of us who will continue to use the correct name. trump, while a royal pain will soon be gone and some of his foolishness will be gone with him. You are on "borrowed time" trump ... deal with it.

Biden, Biden, Biden. When is the MAGA choir going to change the record? Biden has been gone for a long time now.

The Great Lakes St. Lawrence Seaway System has a total of 15 locks with Canada OWNING (aka known as having sovereignty) 13 of the locks. The passage is the only route for Great Lakes ships to reach the Atlantic Ocean, typically carrying grain, coal, and iron ore.

Not to mention the Welland Canal that lies entirely in Canada and provides the route around Niagara Falls between Lake Ontario and Lake Erie.

Ships that ply those locks are specifically sized to fit through those locks.

The Boundary Waters Treaty of 1909 specifically guarantees free and open navigation for commerce through boundary waters to vessels of Canada and US on equal terms.

But with a hostile POTUS Trump claiming sovereignty over the Lakes (as well as all of Canada), Canada may make the case to legally retaliate by closing its 13 locks and Welland Canal.

"International law recognises what are called countermeasures, which can allow an injured country in certain circumstances to temporarily suspend some obligations in order to induce another country back into compliance."

These idiots...

Canadians will solemnly rename every street, park, and square after the nearest Indigenous word they can Google translate.

Complete with diacritics and apostrophes no one can pronounce while nodding along that this is “reconciliation.” Maybe all that ‘stolen land’ talk is shrinking their brains??

My favorite part was when they changed some street names to the point that CanadaPost couldn't even deliver, and the fire department and EMS couldn't identify.

Me? No I didn't. I was a Sanders supporter. Biden never should have run in 2020. It was clear even then that he was already suffering early stages of dementia. It was the Democrat Superpacs and leadership that wanted Biden. You might recall, they threw Sanders under the bus at that convention. But the Dems had turned their back on their working class base much earlier - around the Clinton presidency. They opted instead for Popstar luvies and Hollywood weirdos. Obama brought back some working class voters and Black voters, and he was and remains popular, but the Dems as a party didn't change their stripes. They were still a right-of-center pro-business, pro-globalist party like the Republicans aiming at upper income earners and pro-israeli lobbyist money. Eventually their lack of appeal caught up with them - and Trump swept in. But they still don't get it. The working class and lower middle class felt abandoned by the Dems. Ripe pickings for Trump in the intervening years. The Dems are an own-goal party still stumbling in the wilderness. That's to Trump's advantage. And it is the achilles heal of US politics - a 2 party system with neither representing the majority desires of Americans who just want a piece of the prosperity of the wealthy most powerful nation on earth, a good stable job, safe schools that will actually teach their kids to read and write, a crackdown on gun violence, publicly funded health care so they don't need to mortgage their house when mom, dad or grandma gets cancer. The ICE immigration show is a distraction and the migrants getting swooped up are paraded as the evil ones. The tariffs are a smokescreen for Trump while he and his family enrich themselves. Time for you and your MAGA friends to recognize - and fast - what's really going on before the country goes right down the tube. Depression, civil war, race war, maybe all.

Yes I goggled and was still Lake Ontario. Even Americans are puzzled and questioned "what's the point of all this" and where are the policies for the kitchen table.

This would have not been necessary if they had just called it Lake Trump as an homage to the great, wise and respected leader of their neighboring country.

Elbows up!

I'm not nearly as confused as when they changed the names of hundreds of American places under the autopen administration. Probably spent tens of $$ millions on new signs.

They can keep their sign, in Canada.. It will never be displayed on US soil. Thanks to the greatest President in history, Donald Trump. Your President. Now say his name.

You must have about 3 post of jibberish you keep rotating through. They’re all the same.

The beneficial effect of Canadian tourists on the US economy is peanuts, and mostly affected by the crappy Canadian economy. Especially since the dystopian shutdowns.

I think medical tourism is still holding up since the Canucks don't want to die waiting on an appointment for their "free healthcare".

Besides, it'll come back when Canadians are freezing their butts off in a few months and they can only afford to drive. We get quite a few Canucks every winter in Texas.

You're going to have to come up with something better.

Purely for the American people.

No other President has ever done that.

Getting off-topic, but you seriously need to join the real world.

Trump has been profiting from the Presidency since before he entered office. After he was elected, and before he took office, he doubled the admission fee for Mar-a-Lago from $100,000 to $200,000 effective January 1, 2017. If course he's been spending lots of time at the place since then. https://www.foxnews.com/politics/trumps-mar-a-lago-doubles-initiation-fee-to-200k

Of course that's nothing compared to his relaxing rules on crypto, opening crypto accounts and putting his two unqualified sons in charge, and taking in hundreds of millions from countries trying to influence US policy. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/feb/02/trump-uae-crypto-deal

It was a good investment on the UAE's part. From the source:

"Months after the deal, the Trump administration announced that the United Arab Emirates would be allowed to import 500,000 of Nvidia’s powerful AI chips – overriding concerns that the deal could eventually allow China access to the technology."

I sense jealousy.

Trump owns Mar a Lago. He can charge whatever he wants. You’re priced out either way.

Quote which law was broken.

Trump had his hands full running the country.

He has staff and family running his businesses.

Again, post the laws broken.
