Carney Says U.S. Wants to 'Destroy' Canadian Industries

Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada is still working on options to retaliate against US President Donald Trump’s new tariffs on Canadian goods, while adding that he is prepared to continue trade talks if Washington changes its stance.

Speaking at a news conference in Quebec on Monday, Carney said he was continuing discussions with US negotiators. He added that there is a mutually beneficial deal possible, but only on terms Canada considers fair.

US Plans more Auto Tariffs From January

The discussions with U.S. negotiators revealed that Trump wants to destroy Canada’s major industries — steel, aluminum and autos — with unfair terms, Carney said.

Carney told reporters that the government is aiming for a settlement that respects Canada’s sovereignty and independence and uses the countries’ complementary strengths rather than breaking up industries for short-term gain.

His remarks came hours after Trump said he would raise tariffs on Canadian-made autos to 50 per cent from 1 January. Trump also said auto parts would face tariffs, reversing the current approach.

At present, the 25 per cent tariff applies only to non-US content within finished vehicles, while auto parts crossing the border remain tariff-free.

The warning came after the Trump administration imposed 50 per cent tariffs on about US$20 billion worth of Canadian exports from Saturday morning. The measures cover products including furniture, plastics, plywood and electrical equipment.

The two sides had held talks aimed at preventing the new levies, but negotiations ended on Friday, with each side blaming the other for the breakdown.

Canada’s Counter-Tariffs and Possible Targets

Carney said his government has pledged to respond with counter-tariffs by 8 September, covering American steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, electronics and pulp and paper. He said officials are still preparing the detailed list of goods.

He also said the government will provide support for industries affected by the new US duties.

Carney argued that the negotiation approach was unacceptable, saying Canada would not accept terms that treat Canadian industry as subordinate to the US or that create ongoing disadvantages compared with US producers.

While Canada is considering retaliation, Carney said he preferred to try “positive” steps first, including building new coast guard vessels using Canadian steel, which he announced with Quebec’s premier.

He said the government is examining a range of options and did not rule out measures involving critical minerals, energy or other exports to the US.

“The strategic and symbolic scope of reprisals are very important,” Carney said, adding that Canada would seek action “where there’s sensitivity”. He acknowledged that matching the US dollar-for-dollar would be difficult given the size of the American economy, suggesting Canada’s response may need to be more targeted.

Negotiations, Social Media Pressure and Sector Fallout

Carney previously said talks collapsed for several reasons. Negotiators discussed reducing US auto tariffs to 15 per cent, but the US would not extend the relief to medium- to heavy-duty trucks, including vehicles produced at Ford Motor Co.’s plant in suburban Toronto.

He also said the US pushed to limit Canada’s ability to strike trade deals with other countries and made demands relating to cultural and French-language issues that Canada rejected.

While Carney was speaking, Trump again posted on social media, referring to Carney as “governor” and criticising Ontario Premier Doug Ford, warning of consequences for Canada.

The US trade representative, Jamieson Greer, said Canada made late demands that overturned the draft agreement. Greer said the proposal would have cut tariffs on autos, steel, aluminium and lumber and set cooperation on export controls, digital trade and joint tariffs. It would also have started formal talks to renew the Canada-US-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), which Trump negotiated in his first term but declined to renew this year.

Parts of Canada’s economy have already been hit by losses and layoffs linked to earlier sectoral tariffs, including Ontario auto plants and steel mills. Some smaller manufacturers had been protected earlier because US exemptions applied to goods shipped under CUSMA, but the new 50 per cent levies—ordered under a rarely used 1930 Tariff Act provision—do not follow that framework.

Carney said that if Trump follows through with 50 per cent auto tariffs, the move would disrupt supply chains that have connected the two countries’ auto sectors for decades.

You think EU citizens vote directly on who will be the EU President?

That's cute. 😄

You do know that the UK held elections for those to serve in the EU and represent UK interests, don't you? Obviously not. The most high profile one was a certain Nigel Farage. The fact that most didn't bother to vote is hardly grounds for them then complaining about being 'ruled' by the EU.

It's because they know how little real power MEP's have.

All key leaders (like the European Commission President) are chosen through complex institutional negotiations rather than a direct popular vote.

It's an illusion of Democracy. "Look, you can choose your MEP" (but please ignore the fact they are like a dog with no teeth, we will select all the important people for you).

On that, ask people what rules they objected being victims of and you'd get a blank stare, apart from the EU famously determining the shape of bananas. The rules the UK benefitted from included airline compensation for delayed or cancelled flights and no (or greatly reduced) phone roaming charges while in Europe. The UK then had to pass new laws to reinstate the EU laws people objected to. Then there was the freedom to seamlessly work and travel within the EU....gone.

A few crumbs offered in exchange for surrendering sovereignty to a corrupt federalist project? No thanks.

Carney is obviously lying.

If the US wanted to destroy Canadian industries they could just invade Canada, in less than a week Canada would be no more.

In fact this is what the US should do, just invade Canada. Take the 33 trillion USD in natural resources and appropriate all corporate entities.

The Canadians could never defend their country. It would be over in a week.

Then put Carney in a cell next to Maduro.

Carney is just a central banker. He knows nothing about the deviant life lived by the man he succeeded. He was probably seeing Katy perry well before saying goodbye to his wife. His hedonism he knows will be short lived as he will have to answer for his crimes and he won't have the same protection as Obama from worrying about dropping the soap in his blue collar resort prison

I have no idea why Trump is so magnanimous and lenient with Canada.

For decades the Canadians have shipped 73 % of their exports to America and in return only took 18% of US exports. Who's stealing from whom? The Canadians have been taking America's lunch money for decades, Doug Ford.

Now Trump tolerates this jumped up failed governor of the Bank of England. Carney was clueless then, maintaining historically low interest rates and loose monetary policy for far too long, fuelling structural economic problems like high asset and house prices. And he's still clueless now, driving Canada right into a major recession.

Trump should invade Canada and take its 33 trillion USD of natural resources. That's just the natural resources, Canada's corporate entities are worth another 18.8 trillion USD. That's 51 trillion USD! The US could wipe out its national debt with Canada. And Canadians are basically defenseless, it would all be over in a week. Trump is too soft, he should invade Canada.

It is reported on UK independent radio that the USA was demanding that it had the right to veto any deals that Canada wanted to make with 'third parties', other nations. The USA was also demanding that Canada reduce the amount of French language used in Canada. Canada decided that the USA was trying to dictate how Canada should run its country, acting as if it was an American state, and it was tantamount to an attack on Canada by the USA.

How would they know? The details of the actual offer they walked away from haven't been released. Just talking points.

That's probably why we're seeing a lot of Canucks demanding they reveal exact details.

The brother of Doug Ford, Rob Ford, was a coke smoking mayor of a major city in North America. Canadians are deviant and morally bankrupt. Trudeau is a joke now, dancing like a cat.

Time to wipe this corrupt Canadian elite off the map, and teach the Canadians a few lessons. Their country would be conquered in less than a week.

They might know because they are journalists and have sources and ask questions. That's what real journalists do, rather than simply report what they are told by vested interests.

Good segment on PBS Newshour, Aug. 24 (USA) concerning the trump disruption of the USA relationship with our closest neighbor, Canada. Very pointed explanation of the trade balance which points to only the oil the USA imports showing the reason for a trade imbalance. Also, the reminder that while trump denounces, insults, belittles our Canadian friends it was trump himself that directed the current trade agreement in his first term in office. I think we all would feel the same as Canadians if we had a good friend who turned on us. As an American citizen, I deeply apologize for the damage trump and his minions are causing and understand that the damage done by this betrayal will take generations to heal but never be forgotten. Historically, the damage done by trump will haunt us after he is removed. I encourage all Canadians to RESIST ... buy no American goods and cancel any plans to visit the USA until trump is removed from office, by whatever means. "32 US states list Canada as their greatest export trade partner." trump in his policies and actions is an enemy to the interests of the USA and its citizens.

Quick question... What's the ratio of Dems and Repubs working at PBS?

Because at NPR, we found out it was 87 Dems and 0 Repubs.

And both have been in the hotseat for disingenuous reporting. So I don't put a lot of stock in a PBS report.

That said, they did a great documentary about racoons moving into suburbia. They should stick to what they're good at.

Well, there is doubt about of Brexit being the biggest mistake after WW2.

Btw EU is "ruled" by elected politicians.

Democratic Voting: Every five years, EU citizens directly elect Members of the European Parliament (MEPs).

Iran is a much tougher opponent than Canada. Roughly 90% of Canada's total population, live within 100 miles (160 km) of the U.S. border.

A hypothetical United States invasion of Canada would result in a swift, overwhelming conventional military victory for the US within 48 hours to a few days.

Defense experts note that because 90% of Canada’s population lives within 100 miles of the US border, its major cities would fall almost instantly to a coordinated lightning blitz.

Phase 1: The Lightning Blitz (Days 1–2)

The initial onslaught would be characterized by absolute US technological and numerical dominance. [7, 8]

  • Decapitation Strikes: Cyberattacks and surgical missile strikes would immediately paralyze Canada's communication channels, power grids, and leadership hubs. [2, 6]

  • Border Overrun: Due to extreme border proximity, US mechanized divisions would seize Vancouver, Toronto, Ottawa, and Montreal almost simultaneously. [4, 7]

  • Air and Sea Dominance: The US Navy would blockade Atlantic and Pacific ports, while the Air Force would easily secure complete air superiority over Canada's underfunded defense forces. [7, 8, 9]

  • Choke Point Control: US forces would quickly seize critical resource hubs, including Ontario's mines, western oil fields, and major hydroelectric plants. [7, 9]

Phase 2: The Canadian Elite Eliminated

  • Special Commandos: Special Commandos, such as Seal Team 6 which located Bin Laden, would be dispatched to locate Mark Carney, Doug Ford, Rob Ford and other Canadian leadership figures, imprison them and transport them for trial to the US.

  • Incarceration Hubs: Special incarceration hubs to house the inevitable left wing resistance would be set up in the Canadian Permafrost far from urban centres.

Phase 3: The Long-Term Occupation

The true nightmare for the Canadians would begin after the conventional fighting ends, shifting to a brutal and full on occupation of every aspect of Canadian life.

  • No more free health care: Canadian free healthcare would be abolished and they would be forced to buy private insurance from the now American health insurance companies in Canada.

  • The Wilderness Migration: Ultra-left wing Canadians, of which there are many would be shipped to particularly remote and rugged areas of Canada where they cannot exert their harmful influence.

  • The "Invisible" Infiltration: Because Americans and Canadians share nearly identical language, culture, and accents, US soldiers would find it easy to infiltrate Canadian life at every level, thus making perfect surveillance a possibility.

Let's try Chatgpt, what was added:

  1. Restrictions on Canada’s ability to make independent trade deals with other countries. Canada viewed this as a threat to its economic independence and sovereignty.

Mike Carney

  1. More restrictive rules for Canadian automobiles. The U.S. wanted tougher American-content requirements for vehicles to qualify for lower tariffs.

Reuters

  1. Reduced tariff relief for Canadian vehicles and metals, including disagreements over which categories of trucks would qualify for relief.

Reuters

  1. Pressure concerning Canada's dairy, alcohol and other market-access policies. The U.S. argued that Canadian restrictions discriminated against American products.

The White House

  1. There was also a major dispute over Quebec's French-language protections. Carney said the U.S. proposal would weaken protections that Canada considers fundamental rights.

The calculation is simple.

Sure, Canadian real estate is not worth a lot, a paltry 4.1 trillion USD. However, the Canadians are sitting on 33 trillion USD of natural resources and the corporate entities of Canada have assets worth another 18 trillion USD.

That's over 55 trillion USD. Sitting right there for the taking, basically undefended. Right next to the USA.

Surely invading Canada is worth considering?

OK so graduated pre Biden then. Grocery prices doubled since then, degree values have halved. That's what happens when the president allows his aides to run the country. They could have just worked those 4-6 years, put the saved income into spacex stock and retire in 10 years

What are you talking about? Both have worked since they were 21. Previous jobs have been with Oracle and Apple. The one with SpaceX has 1500 shares, the one in Google is acquiring shares yearly. They both plan on retiring in less than 10 years. Helps that one is married to a doctor the other to an aerospace engineer.

Seriously, why negotiate with these obnoxious and unreasonable people? When you can just take all they have in 48 hours?

After Iran an invasion of Canada would be like a 2 day holiday camp excursion for US soldiers.

Why is Trump even negotiating? Just take all Canada has!
