Carney’s Trump Stand Fuels Nobel Prize and Time Award Buzz

Mark Carney’s public stand against U.S. President Donald Trump has helped turn the Canadian prime minister into a centre of talk around two major awards, with some traders and admirers now pointing to the Nobel Peace Prize and Time magazine’s Person of the Year.

Carney briefly became the front runner for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize on the Kalshi prediction market in the United States on Monday, when his odds were priced at 14%. The figure later fell, highlighting the speculative nature of betting on outcomes that depend on decisions by the Nobel Committee. The Nobel Peace Prize will be announced on Oct. 9 in Oslo, Norway.

Prediction Markets Spur Speculation

There is no public evidence that Carney is on the Nobel Committee’s internal shortlist for the prize. Still, the interest in his candidacy reflects a broader narrative linked to his approach to international relations.

That message, supporters say, is that “middle powers” should coordinate to protect sovereignty as major powers increasingly rely on economic and military leverage.

Whether the Nobel Committee responds to that argument cannot be determined. The timing of the renewed attention also matters because both the Nobel Peace Prize and Time’s annual honour are awards Trump has long appeared to value.

Trade War Raises Carney’s Profile

Carney and Trump are locked in an escalating trade dispute. The United States has imposed tariffs of 50% on billions of dollars worth of Canadian goods, prompting Canada to retaliate. Trump has also told Canadian leaders to “fall in line”, warning of consequences described as worse than existing tariff measures.

Trump has twice been named Time’s Person of the Year and has frequently complained about not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize. In July, he said he “should have won that award more than anybody”.

Academics and analysts said Trump is likely to react strongly if the Nobel recognition goes to Carney. Daniel Béland, a political science professor at McGill University in Montreal, said Trump would be upset if such an outcome occurred. Nelson Wiseman, professor emeritus at the University of Toronto, said a Nobel for Carney could make relations with Canada “rockier” than they are already.

Trump does hold a Nobel medal, although it was not awarded to him as laureate. In January, the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize winner, Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, presented the medal at the White House; Trump accepted it, while the Nobel Committee said the prize itself remained Machado’s.

Time Recognition And Global Appeal

Time has already highlighted Carney’s influence this year, naming him among the 100 most influential people of 2026 and saying his popularity increased as he stood up to Trump.

On Tuesday, Carney was priced as the second choice on major prediction markets for Time’s Person of the Year, behind New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Time will announce the winner on Dec. 10.

Time has characterised the cumulative effect of Trump’s leadership as contributing to a “new global order” driven less by institutions and systems and more by the decisions of a single individual. In response, Carney has urged middle powers to act together rather than accommodate pressure from Washington one by one.

Scott Galloway, a professor at New York University, said Carney is likely to win Time’s honour. Fareed Zakaria, speaking on Galloway’s podcast, said Carney is gaining admiration abroad and has helped countries facing a less predictable United States find ways to build alliances instead of simply aligning with Washington.

Carney’s international standing rose further in January at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, when he argued that the old international order was not returning and called for middle powers to work together. His speech, given as European leaders confronted Trump’s push to acquire Greenland and repeated tariff threats, drew a standing ovation.

Since then, Carney has sought to put the case for a reshaped order into practice, moving Canada closer to Europe and looking for new partners in Asia as tariffs strain ties with the United States. This month, European lawmakers again showed support after European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen proposed opening the door for Canada to become the European Union’s first associate member.

Wiseman said Carney’s profile has been fuelled by his resistance to Trump, and that the pressure on Canada has helped elevate his standing internationally.
