Fauci diary reveals clash with ‘rambling, crazy’ Trump

Anthony Fauci’s private diary entries from the first year of the Covid-19 pandemic reveal his growing frustration with Donald Trump’s handling of the crisis, describing the former president as “rambling”, “crazy” and “incompetent”.

The journals, released by Republican Senator Rand Paul as part of his long-running criticism of Fauci’s role in the US pandemic response, show the former government science adviser documenting difficult interactions with Trump as the virus spread across the country.

Early warnings over virus response

Fauci wrote that he spoke with Trump during a late-night phone call on 27 February 2020, as concern over Covid-19 was increasing in the US.

According to the diary, Fauci urged the president not to minimise the seriousness of the outbreak, warning that downplaying the threat could harm Trump politically if the situation worsened.

Fauci wrote that he advised Trump that being transparent about the risks would earn public respect, even if the economy and stock market suffered.

However, he noted that Trump appeared to return to a more dismissive approach the following day.

Criticism grows during election year

By mid-March 2020, as lockdowns and public health restrictions were introduced, Fauci recorded frustration over Trump’s focus on media appearances.

He wrote that Trump wanted two daily press briefings, leaving officials with less time to work on the response.

In May 2020, Fauci wrote that Trump was becoming increasingly focused on reopening the country ahead of the presidential election, describing the push as driven by political concerns.

A true embarrassment

Months later, as infections rose before the election, Fauci criticised Trump’s campaign appearances and wrote that the president was “out of control” and a “true embarrassment”.

After Trump lost the election but attempted to challenge the result, Fauci compared the situation to historical examples of leaders refusing to accept defeat. By March 2021, he described Trump as “truly an obnoxious adolescent”.

The diary entries also show Fauci’s concerns about being viewed as a source for journalists. He recorded conversations with Washington Post reporter Bob Woodward, who was writing a book about the US response to Covid-19.

Long-running dispute with Rand Paul

The publication of the diaries was arranged by Senator Rand Paul, a Republican from Kentucky who has repeatedly criticised Fauci’s pandemic policies.

Paul has accused Fauci of supporting unnecessary restrictions and has questioned whether research funding linked to US institutions contributed to the origins of Covid-19. Fauci has rejected claims that the virus was created in a laboratory and has continued to support the theory that it emerged through animal-to-human transmission.

The two have clashed publicly, including during a 2022 Senate hearing when Fauci said Paul’s accusations had contributed to threats against him and his family.

Paul has said he plans to question Fauci again at an upcoming hearing, where the 85-year-old former adviser has been required to appear.

The diaries have also drawn attention to Fauci’s own comments about his public profile during the pandemic. In one 2020 entry, he noted widespread support from the public and described himself as being seen as a highly trusted scientific figure. His notes also recorded meetings and interactions with celebrities and media figures during his rise to international recognition.

From what I've read so far of the Rand disclosures, Trump is going to come out looking a LOT better than Fauci from the release of the diary.

I will place a big caveat of truth in what you say but that aside only a third trust Trump than Fauci during the outbreak. In the National Consensus, majorities (over 70%) of Americans consistently favored Fauci over Trump in handling the pandemic. If Trump looks better from release, then really a small gain of the minorities. Quite embarrassing.

Polls measured media-driven popularity and partisan tribalism at the time, not scientific accuracy, predictive skill, or net outcomes.

Contemporaneous polls showed higher trust in Fauci than Trump? True and driven by media framing plus existing polarization. That does not mean Fauci’s guidance was more accurate or that the policies he championed produced better net results. Early China travel restrictions Trump pushed (against some expert caution), later data on school closures, mask guidance flips, and the lab-leak question all undercut the idea that higher poll numbers equal better science or leadership.

Popularity in 2020 is not the same as being right in hindsight. Remember then Twitter, Facebook and Youtube censorship?

Trust is downstream of narrative control as much as competence.

It was a very controversial and yes 'stupid' thing to say and yes some folks took it as advice, but he was actually asking a question.

The thing is this happened 6 years ago and everything Trump says, even soundbites get dissected by everyone including the MSM.

We all say or write some things we wish hadn't, but for us .commoners' it gets forgotten after a few days, everything Trump says is recorded and gets regurgitated at some point....like this!

Even Trump ultimately found out it was BS and tried to pretend that he was being sarcastic! 🤣🤣🤣

“I was asking a question sarcastically to reporters like you just to see what would happen,” Trump said.

Facts matter.......

A study from JAMA Health analyzed state COVID policies and found stark differences. Strong mandates (masks, vaccines, no bans on public health powers) were associated with 10–21% fewer excess deaths. Weak restrictions and bans were associated with 13–17% more. Behavior—mask use, mobility, vaccination—explained most of the gap.

The evidence points to a reality that political arguments often ignore: public health decisions had consequences.

The virus was biological. The response became political. And when accountability for the tragedy became a search for a scapegoat, the messenger became the villain.

Odd how only some people have to appear when subpoenaed.......others just ignore them and some, who obviously should be subpoenaed, never receive one .....a mystery.

So why did dumb (with a b) people actually try using bleach?

To quote Trump, "And then I see the disinfectant, where it knocks it out in a minute. One minute. And is there a way we can do something like that, by injection inside or almost a cleaning? Because you see it gets in the lungs and it does a tremendous number on the lungs. So it would be interesting to check that. So, that, you’re going to have to use medical doctors with. But it sounds—it sounds interesting to me."

So he was speculating about injecting something "like" bleach but not bleach. In the 18 hours following the briefing, the New York City Poison Control Center handled 30 cases of exposure to household cleaners—including 10 involving bleach and 9 involving Lysol.

Just dumb MAGAs?

Why?
They obviously drank the Kool-Aid. Why would bleach be any different?

Then came: 'January 6th. Be there, will be wild!'

How did that work out for Babbitt and the over 1,000 now convicted criminals?

What's the next loyalty test?
