Germany Blames Russia For Leipzig Airport Drone Attack

Germany has said Russia was behind a drone attack on Leipzig/Halle Airport in eastern Germany last month, after officials reviewed equipment used in the incident and intelligence assessments.

The attack was discovered on 4 August, when a drone carrying an explosive device was found at the airport near Ukrainian cargo aircraft. The device did not detonate, with investigators concluding that the detonator was faulty.

German authorities said they believe a second drone then collided with a nearby cargo aircraft, while a third drone was reportedly found at the site ten days later.

Drone Attack At Leipzig/Halle Airport

Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said the episode followed what he described as a long-established pattern of Russian “hybrid operations” in Europe, adding that Germany had assumed it could be targeted again.

He said the examination of the explosive equipment, together with intelligence findings, showed Russian involvement.

Germany has previously said it believed “foreign powers” could be behind the Leipzig incident but had not publicly identified Russia.

German Response And Russian Retaliation

Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said Germany would take further steps against Moscow. He said he would order the closure of the Russian consulate in Bonn and terminate the contract for the Russian House in Berlin, a venue that many observers have linked to espionage and Russian propaganda.

Wadephul also announced tighter entry controls for Russian nationals and said Germany would increase pressure on Russia’s “shadow fleet” — old tankers used to help circumvent Western sanctions imposed after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

He said he had summoned Russia’s ambassador to Germany, Sergei Nechayev, after the announcement. Nechayev was seen arriving at Germany’s foreign ministry shortly afterwards.

Maria Zakharova, a spokesperson for the Russian foreign ministry, said Moscow would respond in a “mirror-image” manner to Germany’s measures, and told the German Press Agency that Berlin was “sponsoring terrorism” in reference to military and economic support for Ukraine.

Russia has consistently rejected allegations of involvement in such attacks.

Reactions In NATO And The EU

Nato chief Mark Rutte said the alliance was “in full solidarity with Germany”, adding that the evidence was clear and that he welcomed the steps announced by Berlin. He posted the comment on X.

The measures were expected to be discussed at a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Ireland later on Tuesday. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on X that the EU would stand against Russian aggression and deter those seeking to undermine European freedom and security, adding that additional sanctions against Russia were being prepared.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Russia was “escalating tension across the whole region”. Polish prosecutors are investigating whether foreign intelligence services were involved in a fire at a factory making drone components on Monday.

In the UK, Prime Minister Andy Burnham said Russian efforts to undermine support for Ukraine were “futile and doomed to fail”.

Other Security Incidents And Politics

Leipzig/Halle Airport is used for military transport involving Germany and Nato allies, and it is also a base for Ukraine’s Antonov Airlines, which carries most of the country’s air freight.

Germany has reported drone sightings at airports, military and industrial sites over the past year. Chancellorship security officials have warned that Germany is a “daily target” for hybrid warfare, and Chancellor Friedrich Merz said last week that those carrying out hostile acts would “pay a price”. The government has said it is looking to strengthen intelligence powers, which critics have described as limited.

The announcement comes as Merz faces political pressure at home. A key state election in Saxony-Anhalt could give the far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) a state-level role for the first time. The AfD, Germany’s largest opposition party, wants to stop sending support to Ukraine and to reopen ties with Russia. An MP from Merz’s CDU, Roderich Kiesewetter, said the steps taken so far “fall far short” and that Moscow “just laughs” when the ambassador is summoned.

Separately on Tuesday, German police said they are investigating the discovery of improvised explosive and incendiary devices at a power substation in Brandenburg. A power line was damaged, causing a temporary outage, and it is not known who planted the devices.

Of course the Russians are doing this. Germany should stop financing Ukraine, better for Germany, and these issues would go away.

Then buy cheap gas again and get the German economy out of the quagmire the politicians put it in.

The current German population couldn't take Poland, let alone Russia. And if they did go to war, Russia has nuclear weapons, whereas Germany has trans and bisexual politicians wearing make-up.

I would have much rather not have had any invasion, as it was so avoidable. Putin had warned the West about enlarging NATO. He was ignored. Even at the eleventh hour, Putin was happy to negotiate with Ukraine, who had agreed to terms. Then Biden and Boris Johnson entered the scene and persuaded Zelensky to fight as the West would back him.

This war is the result of a conspiracy of the British and Americans and Ukrainians, granted with input from Russia, but it was completely avoidable.

Now that it's started it would be much better for Russia to win because that is the only way this will end.

Rewriting history, are we?

Only countries that had a legitimate fear of Russia asked to join NATO. NATO didn't recruit new members, Putin pushed new members to NATO.

When was Putin "happy to negotiate with Ukraine"? What terms had Ukraine agreed to?

Regarding the US and UK persuading Zelensky to fight, how does that relate to this well known event: https://www.cnn.com/2022/02/26/europe/ukraine-zelensky-evacuation-intl/

Just telling it as it really happened.

Whilst it is true of course that those that joined NATO did not find Russia appealing for various reasons, not just "fear" but of course economic reasons, it is clear that NATO very much encouraged it by its own actions.

When? In the spring of 2022 in Istanbul, Russia and Ukraine had basically reached an agreement, with Russia accepting Ukraine's proposals actually, which included Ukraine becoming neutral. Then Boris Johnson flew in specifically with the aim of sabotaging the peace deal and told Zelensky "Let's just fight", assuring him the West would back him. This is why we have war now.

Most countries outside Europe have fought wars as well. Just look at the US since white people went there. Africa is a mess too even these were not world wars.

The natural state in Europe throughout history has been petty (and not so petty) wars between the inbred monarchies. Like it or not, the stabilizing influence over the past 80 years has been the USA. But western Europe has been taking the money and thumbing their noses at us. And we can't afford it any more.

And now, the UK is mad at France, Spain and Italy are mad at each other and the German economy is basically de-industrializing due to the Greenies. And they're all funding Ukraine with just enough to keep the war going and perpetuate the dying. They'll fight the Russkies to the last dead Ukrainian.

So, sorry. I'm not even close to convinced that the "Russkie" drones weren't planted by someone other than the Russkies.

I see. After Russia's 2014 invasion of Crimea, it's 2018 invasion of eastern Ukraine and the February 2022 full scale invasion of the rest of Ukraine, Putin was willing to "negotiate". You rely on a small think tank that didn't exist before 2019 and which lost internal support for it's dovish response to Russia's invasion.

"In 2022, during the Russian invasion of Ukraine, there were two resignations in protest at the institute's dovish response to the conflict: non-resident fellow Joseph Cirincione of Ploughshares Fund, who had raised money for Quincy, and board member Paul Eaton, a retired senior Army major officer and adviser to Democratic politicians and liberal advocacy groups. Cirincione said he "fundamentally" disagrees with Quincy experts who "completely ignore the dangers and the horrors of Russia's invasion and occupation and focus almost exclusively on criticism of the United States, NATO, and Ukraine". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quincy_Institute_for_Responsible_Statecraft

I prefer more established and respected sources.

Putin is trying to rebuild Stalin's empire, and he is destroying Russia in the process.

Actually your link makes it seem like a very respected outfit. It's safe to assume that Germany and other countries subject to Russian hybrid-war attacks are also anti-Russian. That's what this topic is about.
