Hamas Accused of Systematic Sexual Violence in Oct 7 Attacks

An independent Israeli investigation has presented extensive evidence alleging that Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups carried out widespread sexual violence during the 7 October 2023 attacks in Israel and against hostages held in Gaza.

Get today's headlines by email image.png

The 300-page report by the Civil Commission describes rapes, sexual assaults and sexual torture that it says were used deliberately to inflict maximum harm on victims. Researchers conclude that sexual violence was employed as a tactic during the assault.

The findings draw on hundreds of survivor and witness testimonies as well as thousands of photographs, videos and official records gathered from attack sites.

The Hamas-led attacks killed around 1,200 people in Israel and saw 251 individuals taken hostage, marking the deadliest day in the country’s history.

Evidence from survivors and footage

The commission said its investigation included 430 filmed interviews with survivors and witnesses and analysis of more than 10,000 images and videos, including material filmed by attackers themselves.

Accounts in the report describe scenes of violence at several locations targeted during the assault, including the Nova music festival, where more than 370 people were killed.

Witnesses cited in the report describe hearing and seeing gang rapes during the attack at the festival. One male survivor recounted being abused by attackers. The report also records instances where victims who were raped or sexually assaulted were later shot.

Investigators documented recurring descriptions from multiple sites, including kibbutzim and military bases that were overrun, where bodies of women were reportedly found without underwear or with signs of genital mutilation.

The commission concluded that sexual and gender-based violence formed part of the attacks and described what it called the “weaponisation of sexual violence”.

Allegations of abuse in captivity

The report also states that sexual violence continued during captivity for some hostages held in Gaza, affecting both women and men.

Several former hostages have publicly spoken about abuse they say occurred while they were held, including Amit Soussana, Arbel Yehud, Romi Gonen, Rom Braslavski and Guy Gilbol Dalal. Other accounts cited in the report were shared privately with medical staff, therapists and investigators.

Among the claims detailed in the investigation is an allegation that two young relatives were forced by captors to perform sexual acts on each other. The report describes this as part of a pattern of violence that targeted family members and exploited relationships to instil fear.

The commission says the acts documented in its findings could amount to war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocidal acts under international law.

Evidence gathered by the investigation has been placed in a secure archive and may be used in future legal proceedings.

Disputed claims and verification efforts

Hamas has repeatedly denied that sexual or gender-based violence occurred during the attacks or against hostages.

Previous investigations have also examined the issue. A report by the United Nations Special Representative on Sexual Violence in Conflict said there were “reasonable grounds to believe” that sexual violence, including gang rape, had taken place during the attacks.

Researchers involved in the Israeli investigation said they took additional steps to verify evidence because some early claims circulated by Israeli officials after the attack were later shown to be inaccurate. In addition, some forensic material was lost when first responders quickly cleared attack sites.

To preserve independence, the commission said it did not rely on statements obtained during Israeli interrogations of detained suspects.

The report’s authors said the project was intended not only to collect evidence for potential prosecutions but also to document events for the historical record.

Many victims of sexual violence during the attacks were killed, while others remain traumatised, the commission said. It added that the investigation aimed to ensure their experiences are recorded and not dismissed or forgotten.

The October 2023 assault triggered Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, which has since killed 72,742 Palestinians, according to the Hamas-run health ministry. The United Nations considers the ministry’s casualty figures broadly reliable.

Some of this violence was on you tube for a very shot time before being removed quickly. Sadly I saw one video of it and you can't ever un see it. I consequently have no sympathy for Hamas the people who shelter them and the Palestinians who gave them a heroes welcome home.

It was just plain evil.

Of course. It was absolutely disgusting. I'm not sure why the word accused is used though, they proudly claimed the attack.

People try to brush it off as "that hamas thing" (Gary Lineker) or deny it completely but that's what started the war and now they are playing the victim because they are getting smashed to pieces.

Cry me a river.

Both sides are equally bad - demonising Jews or demonising Muslims. It's a sad world.

Lots of vids about the atrocities of these animals but the one that sticks out to me was the Palestinian captured by the Israelis saying about a 31 year old female hostage,”first my dad raped her, then my brother raped her then I raped her. When we had finished with her,my dad killed her” A family affair.

Inhuman barbaric savages.

No doubt that atrocities were committed during the October 7 Palestinian attack on Israel. While some argue that the attack was justified the fact is that the Palestinians are neither liked nor trusted by any of their Arab neighbours who have not indicated any support for the attack.

This story isnt about demonising Jews or demonising Muslims .

This story is about the actions of Palestinins .

The inhumane barbaric actions of Palestinians .

Jews were the main victims of these attacks , appalling you claim they were the perpetrators of the attacks (by saying Jews were equally bad ).

Now . dont turn this into a Jews bashing thread, there are plenty of those threads already .

No one is denying that these were heinous acts. However, they did not occur in a vacuum, but were a consequence of Israeli actions that are well known. Yon cannot just focus on Palestinians without taking into account the motivations for the attack. While systematic sexual violence is abhorrent, it is worth mentioning that it has been documented by objective observers to occur every day in Israeli prisons.

You can just focus on the atrocities of Oct 7 th .

Face up to what happened .

Palestinians take full responsibility for their actions, rather than trying to blame the victims of the attacks or make excuses for their actions .

Just as the Americans, Britons, Italians, French, Germans, Japanese, Chinese, Spanish and every other military has done in times of war.

But none of those military forces invaded with the sole purpose of raping, murdering and pillaging the way the Palestinians did.

Nor has any other military force raped, murdered and pillaged proudly, recording the events and bragging about them, the way the Palestinians did.

Nor have the returning forces ever dragged their victims through the streets to be pummeled and humiliated by cheering crowds of proud mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters of the perpetrators the way the Palestinians did.

Most Germans were ashamed of what they had done after their attempt to exterminate the Jews, not so the Palestinians, they want only to keep doing it.

These are the people you support. These are the people you make excuses for.

Quite the opposite. Likely an Israeli cover up and deflection, as they are experts at this kind of thing.

Charlie Stadtlander said Kristof "is a two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who has reported on sexual violence for decades, and is widely regarded as one of the world's best on-the-ground reporters documenting and bearing witness to sexual abuse experienced by women and men in war and conflict zones."

Citing 14 firsthand testimonies, Kristof reported on Palestinian men, women and children who said they were sexually assaulted or raped by settlers or members of the security forces while detained in one of Israel's multiple documented torture camps like Sde Teiman.

"It's a simple proposition," Kristof wrote. "Whatever our views of the Middle East conflict, we should be able to unite in condemning rape."

Despite the allegations being backed by human rights groups, the United Nations, independent studies and Israeli media, public figures like former Biden antisemitism czar Deborah Lipstadt and journalist David Shuster called Kristof and his reporting into question.

"An independent Israeli investigation".

Sounds like a self-contradiction. Please prove me wrong.

Can we have a link to this report of theirs?

And also to their reports on the years of abuse perpetrated on unconvicted Palestinian detainees of both sexes and all ages?

And their reports on the long-term collective punishment meted out to Palestinians in general and the people of Gaza and Lebanon in particular?

This is not to suggest that two wrongs make a right, but rather that justice requires looking at all sides of an argument, at the sequence of events and of provocation.

Of course one must recognise the God-given right claimed by Ashkenazi Zionists to reclaim the land from which some of their forebears came two millennia ago. On the same basis that one must recognise the right of peoples whose lands were settled and subjugated by European colonisers to now return the complement on their former masters. Or am I mistaken in this?

"Raped and sexually" assaulted does actually mean they were searched for explosives and weapons .

Internal searches on prisoner's are common in many Countries

No.That's how the dismissal of the wrongdoing is done, by equating a planned intentional massacre, sexual abuse , torture and exploitation with infrequent incidents of wrongdoing. One group set out on October 7 to do evil. The other group responded as a matter of defense and impressing on the perpetrators that the attacks would carry a heavy cost so as to discourage repeat events.

The problem people like you have when you seek to equate wrongful acts is that you ignore that one group has refused to accept responsibility for anything and the other does accept responsibility when it does something wrong. Despite the mass protests in the west by Hamas supporters and their enablers the Arab world neither supported the Hamas attack nor the Gazans following October 7. The Egyptians kept their border closed, and the Jordanians and Saudis looked the other way. Even the Palestinian Authority doesn't really care about the Gazans now.

So these "Ashkenazi zionists" have no right to return to Judea, the land that gave then their culture and their collective name. Ok. How thoughtful of you. How about the Zionists who were there all along, or the descendants of the million or so Zionists who were expelled from Arab countries and suffered mass murder and the theft of all their assets during their expulsions?

Do you even know anything about the Arabs and their religion, including the Quran? The book does not use the term Jew. It calls Jews, Sūrah Banī Isrāʾīl - The Children of Israel. the Quran does not mention Palestinians once. They do not exist in the Quran. On the other hand, the Quran acknowledges the existence of Israel 40+ times. Have a look at the passage Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:21)

This is translated as "My people! Enter the holy land which Allah has ordained for you; and do not turn back for then you will turn about losers." or "O my people! Go into the holy land which Allah hath ordained for you. Turn not in flight, for surely ye turn back as losers" This is interpreted by Islamic scholars to say that the Israelites were ordered after their exodus from slavery in Egypt, to go back to their land that is now known as Israel, the homeland of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

“Hamas claims”—so who, and how is Israel in communication with Hamas or the reverse? First I’ve heard this.

Hamas’ terror attack and sexual violence are indisputably war crimes and crimes against humanity. Though not genocide as claimed, of course.

In a case like this, how is the attacker found, arrested, sent to court? Or…is the leadership charged?

IDF soldiers have certainly stepped far beyond the rules of engagement in Gaza. (Not talking about sexual violence. There may or may not be evidence of that.) In a just world, would they be charged as individuals or would their commanders?

If this report has been translated into English, I’d like to read it. Can anyone point me there? I have no doubt about its veracity.

@Yellowtail I don’t support “these people” nor do I make excuses for them. Sexual violence is what treats women as property.

@Nick Carter icp FFS, Nick, what the F is wrong with you?!? “Internal searches for explosives and weapons” FFS!

@Patong2021 Yep, so sho me where Israel  accepts responsibility for IDF’s horrors. Few investigations, fewer charges, even fewer prosecutions, no convictions. I don’t need to detail them.

Deepest sympathy for the victims…

It is pretty shocking that a significant majority of Israeli Jews still support the attacks on Lebanon, Syria and Iran. The opposition (Bennett and Yair Lapid) also support this, so what will cause a rethink? Perhaps the final judgement in the ICJ genocide trial.

There is hardly anything to rape nor pillage in Gaza, hence the cleaning special op.

But the question you should have asked is: who raped first, and who would have raped again if Israel wasn't implementing a legitimate solution.
