Sudanese Refugee Held After Horrific Belfast Knife Attack

A Sudanese man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following a knife attack in north Belfast that left another man seriously injured, police said.

Get today's headlines by email image.png

The suspect, who is in his 30s, remains in custody after the incident, which occurred at about 22:30 BST on Monday. Officers said they are not seeking anyone else in connection with the attack.

Police recovered what they believe to be a kitchen knife from the scene. The victim, a man in his 40s, suffered serious injuries including slash wounds to his face and back as well as damage to an eye. He remains in hospital in a serious condition.

Authorities praised members of the public who intervened before officers arrived, saying their actions helped save the victim’s life. Video shared online appeared to show local residents confronting the suspect, including one person carrying a hurling stick.

Suspect’s Immigration Status

The UK Home Office said the suspect entered the country in 2023 and was granted refugee status the same year. He currently has leave to remain in the UK until 2028.

According to the Home Office, the man said he entered the UK through the Common Travel Area. Police initially stated that the suspect was Somali but later corrected the information, confirming he is Sudanese.

Police Service of Northern Ireland Chief Constable Jon Boutcher said investigators believe the man travelled from Sudan to Paris before flying to Dublin and then taking a bus to Belfast, where he claimed asylum on 10 February 2023.

Boutcher said there was no record of the suspect on national security databases and that he was not previously known to the PSNI.

Police Appeal for Calm

Assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson said police had consulted counter-terrorism partners but currently had no evidence indicating the attack was terrorism-related. He stressed that inquiries remain at an early stage.

Police also urged the public not to speculate about the case or share inaccurate information online regarding the victim’s condition.

With calls for protests circulating on social media, Henderson appealed for calm and said an increased police presence would be deployed across Northern Ireland in the coming days. He added that other UK police forces had offered support if required.

Some businesses announced early closures following the incident, while public transport operator Translink said services were expected to run normally. The Belfast Health Trust and the Driver and Vehicle Agency also outlined contingency measures in response to potential disruption.

Witnesses Describe Shock

A local resident who contacted emergency services described being deeply shaken by the attack. She said she heard screams outside her home and helped relay information to police through a delivery driver’s phone.

The woman said several people attempted to intervene as the incident unfolded and described the scene as unlike anything she had witnessed before. She added that the attack had left her fearful about safety in her neighbourhood.

Political Leaders Condemn Attack

Northern Ireland’s five main political parties issued a joint statement condemning what they described as a horrific act of violence. They expressed support for the victim, those who witnessed the attack and members of the public who stepped in to help.

Political leaders urged people not to share graphic footage and called for patience while police continue their investigation.

Several politicians, including Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch and Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, called for further information about the suspect’s background and immigration status.

Community organisations also condemned the attack and appealed for unity, warning against allowing the incident to divide local communities.

Violence Erupts as Belfast Attack Suspect Charged

Protesters gathered in Belfast on Tuesday night, with disorder breaking out in parts of the city as tensions rose following a knife attack that left a man seriously injured.

Bins were set on fire and a bus was burned out during the unrest, while traffic was disrupted as crowds also assembled in other towns across Northern Ireland.

The demonstrations came after a 30-year-old man was charged in connection with Monday's attack in Belfast. Prosecutors have charged him with attempted murder, possession of an article with a blade or point in a public place, and making threats to kill.

Police said the victim suffered injuries to his eyes, back and face during the incident. Authorities identified the accused as a Sudanese national.

Increased Police Presence

Earlier in the day, police and political leaders appealed for calm and urged people not to engage in violence or disorder. Officials also announced that additional officers would be deployed in the coming days to help maintain public order and reassure communities.

The calls for restraint came amid growing public attention on the case and concerns that further disturbances could occur.

Refugee Status Confirmed

The UK Home Office said the suspect entered the United Kingdom in 2023 and was granted refugee status later that year.

The department released the information as questions mounted over the man's immigration history following the attack.

Court Appearance Scheduled

The accused is due to appear in court on Wednesday.

The charges relate to the knife attack that took place in Belfast on Monday. Investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The unrest seen in Belfast and elsewhere in Northern Ireland followed news of the charges, with emergency services and police responding to incidents including fires and traffic disruption.

Authorities have continued to urge the public to remain calm as the legal process moves forward.

What I heard is that the assailant pinned the victim on the ground and cut his eyes out with a knife. Belfast and Northern Ireland is a different kettle of fish to anywhere else in Western Europe. This could escalate into a very serious situation. It wouldn't surprise me if Nationalist and Loyalist groups joined together. These people take <deleted>e from no one.

I remain to be convinced that multi culturalism is the way western democracies should be moving.

Economic migrants pay large sums to get to Europe in the hope that the streets are paved with gold and that in a short time they will be substantialy better off and getting lots of sex to boot. When these dreams bump into reality , disappointment , frustration and anger follow.

The longer Europe wrings its hands with moral anguish over taking a tough line , the worse things will get.

Reminded me of the Lee Rigby incident. Practically decapitated him with a kitchen knife in the middle of the street in broad daylight.

Well done to the passers by who helped. I hope they are not charged with a hate crime.

I also hope the stories of the victims eyes being removed prove to be untrue.

Unfortunately when you import the third world you get these types of problems. Its not like people were not warned.

We've been badly let down by these virtue signalling fools.

I would like to see her sharing her home with the assailant and others of his ilk.

People like this are so far gone along the virtual signaling road , a reality check is order. They need to understand it is not about them .

It is not about how they feel about themselves or how well they sleep at night in their virtuous cocoon. Europe has its own poor and needy that are in in need of help and often shabbily treated by authorities. Illegal immigration by people circumventing all official channels , often without sufficient identification papers and not subject to any background checks , just makes a mockery of those applying to enter legally.

Flew to France, then to Dublin and then a bus to Belfast to claim asylum...and granted leave to stay until 2028, no wonder the UK is in such a state. Any danger to life ended as soon as he arrived in Paris and certainly after his arrival in Dublin. Should have been returned to Dublin and any further attempts to enter Northern Ireland then put on a plain and returned to his country of origin. Why did our home office become so woke and lose all common sense

There seems to be no end to the downward spiral of the quality of life in the UK. There appears to be no part of the social structure, be it government, the police, the judiciary, and more, which is able to get a grip and halt the decline. Sad beyond belief. Lord help us.

And which government was in power when he was granted leave to remain in the UK? Oh, it was the Tories and the ministers responsible were Robert Jenrick and Suella Braverman - both now Reform UK!

Can anyone explain to me why someone attempting murder on the street then leads to people setting fire to shops, buses, houses and shops, damaging their own community?

Multi-culturism is - and has been - a failure from its introduction. There has been no incentive from the government to encourage interaction by the illegal immigrants. All is found for them so why should they try?

Indeed.

Immigration requires integration and assimilation to work. That way you have societal cohesion and a sense of community.

Multi culturalism simply fragments and divides societies into smaller sectarian groups. However that makes them easier to control which is why it is encouraged by radical leftists. If you wish to radically change society you must first break it down and then rebuild it according to your design.

We are in stage 1.

The UK Home Office said the suspect entered the United Kingdom in 2023 and was granted refugee status later that year.

If there was any justice in the UK, the victim would be allowed to sue every politician and official that played a part in letting the ferals into the country. Followed by additional lawsuits by citizens that are now living in fear in their own neighborhoods.

Yes, I can .......

They set fire to the houses and shops of immigrants, whom are not part of their community and never will be part of their community.

They'd probably be just as happy tarring and feathering the politicians and officials. But they have voted for themselves armed security.

The violence wasn't limited to immigrant areas or property. And how is burning down property of innocent people justified anyway? And your saying that immigrants are not part of the community is a very sweeping statement that you have no proof of.

What does "have had enough" mean? What are they going to do about it. All the politicians are pledged to status quo. Even Farage says he will not deport the vast majority of asylees and refugees. And even if you could get a government elected on "doing something," the judges would stymie everyone and everything. The UK system is clogged up. The only way it changes is if pols, judges, bureaucrats, educrats, and the literati are all flushed out. Nobody's going to do that.

It's crazy. But there's a belief on the right that rioting may bring the government down, and this is promoted by the likes of Yaxley-Lennon, Reform and Restore. Fortunately it is unlikely to work as Brits tend to favour democracy.

Every country in Europe should remove all immigrants that are not employed full-time, and put the money saved into their national health and education departments.

Governments only call elections when they have to, or when they think they will win. If Andy Burnham wins his by-election and then the Labour leadership, he might call an election if the polls suggest Labour will win. 🤞

Men ? its all the women doing the talking. The very people who are right now babbling on the TV about the violence in NI,and letting the police do its job are the very people who allowed (and defended )the right of the third world muck to infest the UK

Hopefully its targeted property

The same thing has happened for decades, back to the 60s in my memory. Hasn't worked so far.
