Swedish MP Condemns Brexit Deportations of Elderly Britons

A Swedish MP has criticised the deportation and removal of elderly British citizens from Sweden over Brexit residency rules, saying the cases are harming relations with the United Kingdom as both countries seek to improve ties.

Häkan Svenneling, an opposition lawmaker for Värmland, said he had written to Sweden’s migration minister, Johan Forssell, after Joyce Thomas, a 78-year-old British widow, was given four weeks to leave Sweden following 21 years living in the country.

Letter Sparks Questions Over Deportations

Svenneling said Thomas was ordered to leave after an appeal failed a week earlier, and he asked Forssell what steps the government plans to take “to stop the deportations”. Svenneling is due to meet Thomas on Wednesday.

Thomas moved to Sweden in her late 50s to live nearer one of her sons and her grandchildren. Her husband, who did administrative work in their household, died of cancer in 2023. Thomas said she and friends had checked whether they needed to complete forms to remain after Brexit, and were told they did not.

She later submitted a late application in 2023, several weeks after returning from the UK, but missed the deadline of 31 December 2021. Thomas told the Guardian that she is in “shock” and said her situation has left her feeling unwell, with her removal imminent.

Withdrawal Agreement And Missed Deadlines

Svenneling argued that British citizens who were legally resident in Sweden before the UK’s exit from the EU should retain their existing rights under the withdrawal agreement. He said the EU-UK treaty was not intended to strip people who had lived in Sweden for decades of their right to remain due to a missed deadline or alleged shortcomings in an application.

His intervention also adds to growing pressure on Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and his centre-right minority coalition to address concerns about how Sweden is applying the legally binding withdrawal agreement.

Svenneling said the UK had long been an important partner for Sweden and described the removals as damaging bilateral relations.

Another Elderly Case Highlighted

The MP also cited another case involving Horace (George) Mason, 74, who has dementia and Parkinson’s disease and is in full-time care. Mason moved to Sweden 25 years ago to be near his son Carl and grandchildren and was also given four weeks to leave.

Mason’s family tried a second legal route to remain, arguing that European human rights rules require him to be able to stay close to relatives who rely on him. The migration court of appeal ruled against the request, saying the state’s interest in regulated immigration outweighed Mason’s interest in continuing to reside in Sweden.

Writing in the Guardian, David Milstead, who leads the campaign group Brits in Sweden, said the group had raised concerns about Sweden’s approach as far back as 2020 and said the safeguards were “untested”. He said that among cases of genuine late applications brought to the group, it could not verify an instance where Sweden accepted the reasons for applying after the deadline.

UK Says Sweden Takes Stricter Approach

The UK Foreign Office said it had repeatedly raised concerns with the European Commission that Sweden takes a considerably stricter approach than other EU member states to late applications, with a disproportionate number of refusals. It said that in practice people were unlikely to have their grounds for a late application accepted.

Sweden’s migration agency said it could not comment on individual cases. It added that not knowing that a Brexit-related application needed to be made to remain in the country was not considered a reasonable ground.

So, a Black immigrant to Sweden is weeping over Racist Britons choosing BREXIT because their amygdalas were afraid of immigrants.

Ironic, don't ya think. 😃

Sweden has a major problem with the number, and the character/background, of thousands of unwanted immigrants. I would hardly think a few law abiding, very elderly Brits are causing much trouble.

The Swedish tax payers should not be expected to take on the burden of British hardluck cases.

Human rights should outweigh immigration laws in these cases.

The unauthorized residents human rights are intact. They are being asked to return to their homeland where they will be looked after by the state. There is no human right that requires Sweden to accept deadbeats. These are no Swedish citizens and are not being removed to an unsafe country. Their families can apply to bring them to Sweden and wait like everyone else.

From what you say I gather the Brits are not paying their own way, in which case I agree with you.

The problems have arisen because of the current, very right-wing government, where a party, SD, with a Nazi past and a known aversion to foreigners, is leading the way, even though they are not in the government. It has been decided to revoke permanent residence permits and children, for example, of immigrants in Sweden, children who have never lived anywhere else but Sweden, are expelled when they come of age. This means that they have had schooling for at least 9 years, healthcare and so on for 18 years paid for by the Swedish state and when they can start paying back in the form of taxes on work, they are instead thrown out. What complete idiocy. That a welfare state behaves in this way is frightening. What the government and their supporting party refuse to listen to is, for example, that all Swedish healthcare associations, as well as municipal and county council associations, say that in healthcare we are already severely understaffed and you are threatening to expel 1/3 of our staff! You are threatening Swedish welfare. I am Swedish myself, but I am ashamed of how my homeland behaves.

Still not clear to me if the care of the Brits in Sweden is being paid for by themselves, or by the Swedish government.

They will have access to Swedish social services and urgent medical care at the very least.

Thank you for the compliment. Siam Cement is one of Thailand's oldest and most respected group of companies. It is associated with the building of Thailand's infrastructure and is synonomous with progress. The Crown Property Bureau owns 30%+ of the group, infusing it with good fortune.

Absolutely. Well said.

These are isolated incidents. We are not talking about thousands of people and/or significant sums of money here.

A bit of compassion on the part of the Swedish authorities wouldn't go amiss here.

These are cherry picked situations intended to manipulate public opinion. The reality is that there are thousands of similar cases involving other unauthorized migrants who are not from the UK. If the immigration law is bent for these people, it sets a precedent requiring similar treatment for other unauthorized migrants.

The claim of the importance of the unauthorized migrants in the health care system is a falsehood. it is not just Sweden, but other countries as well. These people are not health professionals. They are almost all general labour and can be replaced with legal authorized foreign workers. Not mentioned is the higher rate of crime associated with the workers. These crimes involve sexual assault and physical abuse of patients as well as petty theft. The proponents of the myth never mention that these workers were often hired without background checks, screening and minimal training or supervision.

Everyone can access urgent medical care in Sweden. No one is denied.

I expect that if they have been in Sweden for a number of years, prior to Brexit, they most likely have a personnummer. Sweden tightened its rules and verifications after July 2023 .

ourists and temporary visitors are always entitled to emergency care. Long-term residents with a Swedish personal identity number (personnummer) get full access to the subsidized public healthcare system,

Umm. I think ya got it backwards, Pat. The discussion was not about, whew, "unauthorised" labour in Sweden's healthcare system but that Brits are on Sweden's universal scheme.

Absolutely nonsense.

Do you really think that there are thousands of unauthorized 75-year old plus migrants with health problems who have been living in the EU - let alone one solitary member state - for 20+ years and whose only crime was that they were too confused to complete the necessary paper work on time?

I was and remain - no pun intended - very much in the 'you reaped what you sowed' camp when it comes to the negative effects of Brexit but there are occasions - this being one of them - when the rules could and should be bent.

If it sets a precedent then so be it. As I said previously, we are not talking about thousands of individuals and/or millions of Euros.

You dismiss the burden of unauthorized migrants in Sweden as absolute nonsense for the simple reason that it is contrary to your opinion. Had you looked at the data you would have have understood the financial burden carried by the Swedish nation.

One person claimed there were human rights violated because of Sweden's intent to enforce its immigration law. Well, there would be if your deficient reasoning was applied. If Sweden, in the absence of a treaty or other legal obligation, carved out exceptions on the sole basis of nationality or age or health condition, then Sweden would be engaged in a discrimnatory action. The law does not allow for carve outs or for it to be "bent" as you demand and the courts have held that immigration law must apply equally for all age groups and all national origins. "Bending" law is a subjective act and allows for impropriety and violates the underlying reqirement of equal treatment before the courts.

There are an estimated 50,000+ unauthorized migrants in Sweden. According to Eurostat, an average of 600 UK nationals have been removed each year from Sweden. In 2019, there were an estimated 30,000+ UK nationals living in Sweden. Most of the UK nationals managed to keep themselves compliant. The 600 who did not, were removed.

Nothing is stopping a person's family from filing the appropriate paperwork and applying for admission to Sweden for humanitarian or charitable reasons. The applicant will be treated like any other person asking for preferred humanitarian admission.

Are you incapable of doing basic math?

Sweden has a health care spend of 64,000 Kronar per citizen.

There are 829,000 registered foreign residents who have personnummers, giving them access state healthcare.

240,000 of these people are refugee status. https://www.scb.se/hitta-statistik/sverige-i-siffror/manniskorna-i-sverige/utlandska-medborgare-i-sverige/

There are an estimated 50,000+ unauthorized migrants in Sweden.

What is the product of 50,000 * 64,000? Do you think it is an inconsequential number?

Now, you are the one who says there is no financial burden. Fine. How did you arrive at that conclusion?

What kind of proof do you have for that statement? It has happened a couple of times in Sweden that unauthorised people have been employed in hospitals; the most well-known one was an Italian professor who was a doctor, but faked the results of his studies. Most of those migrants in Sweden have to go through very hard tests, including Swedish language, even if they can show documents that they are authorised doctors or nurses from their home country. You are stating that the Swedish healthcare associations, as well as municipal and county council associations, say we are already severely understaffed, and that you are threatening to expel 1/3 of our staff. You are threatening Swedish welfare Show me the proof for that you are right.

But it's perfectly okay for immigrant gangs and criminals to run riot across Sweden killing each other... better focus on those disruptive pensioners that bring in foreign currency instead. Morons!

Where does it say in the article that these elderly persons are 'deadbeats'? Methinks you don't know the definition of a deadbeat.

viz:

Debts: Someone who refuses to pay what they owe, bills, or loans.Family duties: A parent who ignores financial and emotional support for their children.Laziness: A lazy person who avoids work and relies on others

There has not been free healthcare for adults in Sweden for about 50 years. However, there is a high-cost protection for healthcare that means you do not have to pay more than 1 450 SEK during a period of 12 month.

There is also a high-cost protection for medicines in Sweden that means that you pay a maximum of 3,800 kronor for prescription medicines over a twelve-month period. But for both of those you you must be registered in Sweden. Immigrants to Sweden must apply to be registered in Sweden themselves and demonstrate that they will stay in the country for at least one year. For those who come from countries outside the EU, EEA, or Switzerland, it takes significantly longer and there are much higher requirements to get a Swedish population registration number, so generally speaking, most immigrants in Sweden do not have a Swedish population registration number and are therefore not covered by the high-cost protection. In other words, they must pay the full price for healthcare and medicine in Sweden. The only exception is in the case of life-threatening care.

Have you looked at the definition of a deadbeat? You have chosen to focus on one of the more specific and common uses of the term. However, the original and true definition is a person who did not do what they should have done. This includes the failure to comply with regulatory or statutory obligations. A parent who does not pay child support is one type of a deadbeat. A person who does not regulatory documents such as tax forms or immigration registrations is another type of deadbeat. A person who does not pay parking tickets is also considered a deadbeat.

I did not specifically call the elderly deadbeats. My original statement is that no nation has a legal obligation to take in foreigners who are deadbeats. And once again, you want a carve out for non compliant people on the basis of age. That is not how laws are applied. Unless the law is specifically written to exempt people over the age of 70 from filing required documentation, no exemption can be provided, otherwise, 30 year olds will expect the same treatment.
