Trump Faces Scrutiny Over Personal Financial Gains

Legal and ethics experts and senior Democrats have raised alarm after Donald Trump’s second term, saying his administration has allowed him to expand his personal wealth while oversight of potential conflicts of interest has weakened.

They point to financial disclosure filings showing that Trump generated unprecedented returns from crypto-linked activities and used political and media platforms tied to him to monetise access. Trump’s allies and advisers dispute that he has breached conflict rules, arguing he is complying with applicable laws.

Crypto windfalls and investor losses

Trump reported revenue of about $2.2bn in 2025, according to the filing cited by critics, describing a rise driven by his cryptocurrency holdings and related business activity. In disclosures submitted in June, he reported earning at least $1.4bn from crypto ventures.

Critics also highlighted harm to investors. They said roughly one million people were exposed through a Trump-linked crypto scheme and collectively lost nearly $3.8bn as the value of volatile holdings fell.

Trump’s embrace of crypto has been central to the scrutiny. Critics noted his earlier remarks warning that the sector was a “scam” and a “disaster waiting to happen” in 2021, before he later backed efforts to promote the US as a hub with less regulation.

Truth Social access for a fee

Democrats also focused on Trump’s Truth Social business. They say it is pushing a scheme offering wealthy buyers special early access to his posts for $100,000 per month, raising potential conflict-of-interest and corruption concerns.

In July, Senator Mark Warner, a Democrat, wrote to six major Wall Street industry groups urging them to reject a new Truth Social product branded “Truth API”. Warner argued the proposal would “sell privileged access” to presidential communications that can move markets, benefiting Trump’s personal finances.

Virginia Canter, chief counsel for ethics and anti-corruption at Democracy Defenders Action, said the approach represented an escalation in using office for private gain, and warned that providing high-speed access to non-public information could encourage conduct resembling insider trading.

Truth Media & Technology, the company behind Truth Social, said on 10 August that it lost $238m in the three months through June, after expanding into new businesses including crypto.

Deals involving the justice department and foreign interests

Beyond media and crypto, critics said Trump has also pursued transactional decisions that favour himself and his family.

They cited concerns that Trump’s justice department helped shape a settlement of a $10bn lawsuit Trump brought against the IRS over a leak of his tax returns. Critics said the agreement could grant him and his family immunity from audits of prior tax years and potentially save $100m.

Other scrutiny involved foreign-related assets. Critics said Trump sought to circumvent the constitutional prohibition on foreign emoluments by accepting a $400m plane as a gift from Qatar, alongside additional backing from wealthy foreigners for Trump family hotel and golf deals abroad.

Ethics experts said Trump has not fully insulated himself from conflicts. They noted that, unlike some predecessors, he has declined to place assets into a completely blind trust or to divest from his businesses.

Regulatory gaps and shifting oversight

Former election officials and legal experts said the pattern amounts to an unprecedented approach to benefiting financially from the presidency. Larry Noble, a former general counsel at the Federal Election Commission, said Trump reported business holdings earning over $2bn in the first year of the term, and warned that the administration’s stance amounts to “pay to play”.

Princeton historian Julian Zelizer told the Guardian that Trump has removed “guardrails” between his businesses and public policy, while Cornell economist Eswar Prasad criticised what he described as regulatory laxness toward the crypto industry, arguing it directly benefits the Trump family.

Critics cited Binance, the world’s biggest crypto exchange, saying weak oversight and enforcement have contributed to scandals. They also pointed to a $2bn investment involving Binance and a World Liberty Financial stablecoin, alongside prior criminal and compliance actions relating to Binance and its former chief executive, Changpeng Zhao, who was pardoned by Trump.

A CNN poll released in late July found 66% of respondents agreed Trump does not put the good of the country over personal gain.

So you're saying "there is no evidence"?

Okay.

How about Democrat mayor of Oakland having her house raided today? She engaged in real corruption. Good to see Trump clean up Democrat corruption, isn't it?

Allegations so far and perhaps selective targeting by FBI. What about cleaning up the President's corruption. Anything to say?

Personal Financial Gains?

It didn’t happen.

OK, whatever happened wasn’t a big deal.

Well then, someone else probably did it for Trump.

Whatever happened isn’t very illegal.

The President can't be held responsible for whatever happened.

Hunter Biden did it too!!1!!

Who cares if the President did it & it’s illegal?

Trump is Pro-Business and not Anti-AI.

They want to turn AI infrastructure into debt so insurance companies and pension funds can buy in and Trump won't stand in their way

What's the worst thing that can happen?

I think his ethics, or shocking lack thereof, were perfectly clear even before his first term. He's just a lot more shameless in openly enriching himself and his family & cronies nowadays. I hope Congress will strike back one day and pass a law to confiscate all the monies he's looted.

Well the Supreme Court did give him immunity and he probably will blanket pardon his closest friends and family.theres no doubt he is the most successful fraudster in history.we or should I say his supporters certainly have been duped the rest of us are just victims.things will certainly heat up after the midterms.he certainly will do everything he can to disrupt that voting process no doubt about that.

Since January 2026, the US manages all sales of Venezeulan oil. Since then, $13 billion worth has been sold. $300million from a $500m sale of oil worth $2 billion has been disbursed to the Caracas, routed through a Qatari Trust. The money was actually being received in 4 Venezuelan private banks: BNC, Mercantil, Banesco and Provincial. It didn't go to the Venezuelan government.

The rest is held by the US Treasury Department as a Black Box Trust. The U.S. government states these funds are held in trust for nation-building, debt repayment, and humanitarian relief, using the money as leverage to influence domestic Venezuelan policy. Foreign minority partners (such as Chevron or Repsol) and designated trading houses are legally permitted to export and sell the crude first. They only deposit the required taxes and royalties into U.S.-managed accounts after taking their profits. As per bilateral arrangements, Venezuela is expected to use the majority of its future direct oil profits exclusively to purchase American-made products. They have no choice in the matter.

The US Treasury Department states:

Secretary Rubio stated on 29th January that Caracas must submit a “budget request” to access its own oil revenues.

Some analysis of the current state of affairs by the CFR:

https://www.cfr.org/articles/the-u-s-took-over-venezuelas-oil-industry-where-has-all-the-money-gone

The US also controls Venezuelan mineral exports.

The article is correct to point out that the US Government is now actively supporting essentially the same Chavista government. Absurd. In Iraq, the US booted out Saddam's government, hanged the criminals, formed a Sovereign Authority, and set up elections for an elected Iraqi government. In the case of the Maduro government, all they really did was get rid of Maduro, and he wasn't the real power broker. The rest of the criminal Caracas government has been subsequently rewarded.

So Trump did not get the money, thanks.

Trump sort of reminds me of the RTP. He's behaving as if the presidency was a franchise that he can use to enrich himself in anyway possible. Morality is out the window, dignity is in the trash can, the image of America means nothing.

It's just Trump down on his knees groveling at the pit of the golden calf.

I wouldI would say yes and no to that Putin has built up a very sophisticated network of patronage and institutional corruption and has amassed many, many billions of dollars as a result.

Trump's system is incredibly crude by comparison, where he takes large bribes for pardons, and he is bought and paid for by the Deep State and doing their bidding like a marionette on puppet strings, in exchange for crypto schemes and other forms of enrichment. It's a bit more of a pig in a trough kind of system.

President Biden.

Now, can we get a "thank you"?

I suggest you scoot off and start wiping all that egg off your face, okay?😂

There is no level of scrutiny that could possibly be enough for Trump's massive level of corruption and profiteering on his second term. It is nothing short of an abomination and an absolute pox on the face of America.

He is the most corrupt president in American history likely by 100 fold. And the really scary part is that his supporters don't even seem to question it, even though he's being very transparent about it. It's about the only thing he is being transparent about.

LMAO

Can you tell us what law he broke this time? Why isn’t he being indicted if he has.
