Trump Faces Scrutiny Over Personal Financial Gains

Legal and ethics experts and senior Democrats have raised alarm after Donald Trump’s second term, saying his administration has allowed him to expand his personal wealth while oversight of potential conflicts of interest has weakened.

They point to financial disclosure filings showing that Trump generated unprecedented returns from crypto-linked activities and used political and media platforms tied to him to monetise access. Trump’s allies and advisers dispute that he has breached conflict rules, arguing he is complying with applicable laws.

Crypto windfalls and investor losses

Trump reported revenue of about $2.2bn in 2025, according to the filing cited by critics, describing a rise driven by his cryptocurrency holdings and related business activity. In disclosures submitted in June, he reported earning at least $1.4bn from crypto ventures.

Critics also highlighted harm to investors. They said roughly one million people were exposed through a Trump-linked crypto scheme and collectively lost nearly $3.8bn as the value of volatile holdings fell.

Trump’s embrace of crypto has been central to the scrutiny. Critics noted his earlier remarks warning that the sector was a “scam” and a “disaster waiting to happen” in 2021, before he later backed efforts to promote the US as a hub with less regulation.

Truth Social access for a fee

Democrats also focused on Trump’s Truth Social business. They say it is pushing a scheme offering wealthy buyers special early access to his posts for $100,000 per month, raising potential conflict-of-interest and corruption concerns.

In July, Senator Mark Warner, a Democrat, wrote to six major Wall Street industry groups urging them to reject a new Truth Social product branded “Truth API”. Warner argued the proposal would “sell privileged access” to presidential communications that can move markets, benefiting Trump’s personal finances.

Virginia Canter, chief counsel for ethics and anti-corruption at Democracy Defenders Action, said the approach represented an escalation in using office for private gain, and warned that providing high-speed access to non-public information could encourage conduct resembling insider trading.

Truth Media & Technology, the company behind Truth Social, said on 10 August that it lost $238m in the three months through June, after expanding into new businesses including crypto.

Deals involving the justice department and foreign interests

Beyond media and crypto, critics said Trump has also pursued transactional decisions that favour himself and his family.

They cited concerns that Trump’s justice department helped shape a settlement of a $10bn lawsuit Trump brought against the IRS over a leak of his tax returns. Critics said the agreement could grant him and his family immunity from audits of prior tax years and potentially save $100m.

Other scrutiny involved foreign-related assets. Critics said Trump sought to circumvent the constitutional prohibition on foreign emoluments by accepting a $400m plane as a gift from Qatar, alongside additional backing from wealthy foreigners for Trump family hotel and golf deals abroad.

Ethics experts said Trump has not fully insulated himself from conflicts. They noted that, unlike some predecessors, he has declined to place assets into a completely blind trust or to divest from his businesses.

Regulatory gaps and shifting oversight

Former election officials and legal experts said the pattern amounts to an unprecedented approach to benefiting financially from the presidency. Larry Noble, a former general counsel at the Federal Election Commission, said Trump reported business holdings earning over $2bn in the first year of the term, and warned that the administration’s stance amounts to “pay to play”.

Princeton historian Julian Zelizer told the Guardian that Trump has removed “guardrails” between his businesses and public policy, while Cornell economist Eswar Prasad criticised what he described as regulatory laxness toward the crypto industry, arguing it directly benefits the Trump family.

Critics cited Binance, the world’s biggest crypto exchange, saying weak oversight and enforcement have contributed to scandals. They also pointed to a $2bn investment involving Binance and a World Liberty Financial stablecoin, alongside prior criminal and compliance actions relating to Binance and its former chief executive, Changpeng Zhao, who was pardoned by Trump.

A CNN poll released in late July found 66% of respondents agreed Trump does not put the good of the country over personal gain.

For years I've been telling people that the only way to make a fortune in pro gambling is to own the casino. He couldn't even get that right.

I agree it takes a certain kind of talent to bankrupt huge casinos. But Trump has a long history of business failures, and it's very likely that most of his fortune has been gotten through stealing from small contractors, corruption, bank fraud, and bankruptcies.

17 of his businesses have failed in the past few  decades. Some at huge losses. Trump Steaks, Trump Shuttle Airline ($120 million in losses between 1988 and 1990), GoTrump, Trump Vodka, Trump Mortgage, Trump University, Trump Ice, The New Jersey Generals, Tour de Trump, Trump Network, Trump Magazine, Trumped!. Many businesses that licensed his name went bankrupt, or went out of business. And he had between four and six major bankruptcies (depending on the source), including the Trump Taj Mahal (which he spent $1.2 billion building, and was $3 billion in debt within a year of opening), Trump's Castle, Trump Place Hotel (which was very successful prior to Trump buying it in 1988, and he managed to put it into $550 million in debt by 1992!), Trump Hotels and Casinos Resorts ($1.8 billion in debt by 2004, bankrupt in 2009) , and Trump Entertainment Resorts. There are likely others.

And this does not take into account the 3,600 lawsuits he was involved in as of the time he took office, the vast majority of which were filed by small contractors against his companies for non payment, or total default. Many of these contractors were crushed. It is part of his M.O.

Promises made but never kept:

Every voter needs to be reminded of Trump's promises last time he was running:

There is very little that comes out of Donald's mouth that is the truth.....

He promised to cut the deficit. He added $8T.

He promised to build a wall. He only did 458 miles out of 2,000. Most of it was repair or replacement, not new.

He promised to make Mexico pay. They didn't. We did.

He promised to unveil a new healthcare plan. It didn't exist.

He promised a middle-class tax cut. He cut taxes for the rich. The middle class is paying for it.

He said he wouldn't play golf as President. He made 250 visits (way more than Obama) to his own golf clubs. It cost taxpayers $150 million.

He said he'd increase economic growth by 4%. Nope. Biden did.

He promised an infrastructure plan. He had none. President Biden signed a massive one.

He promised to hire "the best people." He fired 3/4 of them and then said they were the worst ever, and they said HE was in fact the worst ever.

He promised to bring down the price of prescription drugs. He didn't: Biden did.

He promised a Hillary lock-up. Nope

Promised we'd win the trade war with China. Nope, It cost about 250,000 jobs and hurt Americans, not help them.

He promised his corporate tax cuts would help and benefit Workers, and corporations would use that money to invest in American workers. They didn't, they used that money to buy back stocks.

He promised to revive the coal industry. Never happened: more coal jobs were lost during his presidency.

And this time around he promised no overseas adventures (or excursions), he promised he would bring the price of groceries and goods down and lower inflation, and he promised he'd bring manufacturing jobs back to America. And the exact opposite has happened.

You discredit yourself by asking for evidence of Trump not paying his contractors when it's who's all over the news, and a simple search would prove the allegations I'm making. But then again that would discredit your master which would be a devastating psychological blow to you.

Now you're just defending the circus clown just for the sake of defending the circus clown, he's indefensible for God's sake.

All over the news, yet you can't provide a single example.

Does Venezuela not get the money for their oil? Do you think Trump is stealing it?

What a hoot you are.

Oh come on, it is oil, the USA has taken control of it. The Trump Administration is running the business.

Do you honestly believe that Venezuela and Venezuelans will receive anything? Do you believe that Trump and his cabal of greedy oligarchs are not going to enrich themselves from this oil?

Why do you believe that the US is rapidly becoming so thoroughly loathed throughout the rest of the world?

Which has nothing to do with what I said. The buffoon I was referring to was implying Trump was keeping the money for himself.

Certainly so. They, like so many of the rest of us are dismayed that the country which has so long positioned itself as the leader of the free world and the beacon of democracy has so rapidly and totally morphed into an authoritarian right wing state which combines the foul racial creeds of the likes of Stephen Miller, the bullying of a swaggering hugely dominant military and the kleptocracy of a cabal of modern day robber barons.

Believe me, it is not only leftists, far from it, but a very great number of moderate, often conservative leaning people (like myself) worldwide.

Europe despises what you have become, and laughs at you. The Middle East sees you as a murderous bully, Asia regards you with contempt and without trust, Canada and Australia just take the piss. South America is plain scared of you, and expects you to come for whatever resources you may fancy when you feel like it.

Africa recognises a kindred spirit in a corrupt kleptocracy.

Face it, it is hard to find anyone who likes the supersized, gun obsessed, swaggering bully your once proud nation has become!

MAGA, for crying out loud!

No, as so often this is not a court of law, nor are you (God help us) a judge!

I have expressed an opinion, as you and others do. If you wish to argue against my opinion fill your boots. Others can agree or disagree.

So just another Trump-obsessed regurgitator, regurgitating the same "my opinion" as every other Trump-obsessed regurgitator's opinion.

And what do all you Trump-obsessed regurgitators have in common? You are not able to provide a single example that supports your claim.

You stated as fact, that the United States has "totally morphed into an authoritarian right wing state", yet you are unable to provide a single example of the United States being and authoritarian right-wing state.

How easy being a leftist is. Just parrot what all the other leftistsare saying and call it a day.

1) I am certainly not a leftist.

Yes, you could go on regurgitating all day.

I could give a sh*t less what your comrades in Europe think.

And everything you brought up happened after he beat Clinton. That's when the lawfare started, before that, the left loved him.

In any event, in the post you responded to, I said:

Trump has no difficulty hiring contractors, yet the left would have us believe Trump cheats every contractor he works with. Only a fool would believe such a thing. Of course, all one has to be is a liar to say it.

Why not provide a few examples of the lawsuits in which Trump was shown to be cheating contractors? Oh, that's right, you can't, you're just another Trump-obsessed regurgitator.

Why not address this rather than change the subject? Oh that's right, you're just another Trump-obsessed regurgitator that lacks integrity.

Using the word integrity with Trump is the ultimate oxymoron

During the Atlantic City casino boom in the 1980s, Philadelphia cabinet-builder Edward Friel Jr. landed a $400,000 contract to build the bases for slot machines, registration desks, bars and other cabinets at Harrah's at Trump Plaza.

The family cabinetry business, founded in the 1940s by Edward's father, finished its work in 1984 and submitted its final bill to the general contractor for the Trump Organization, the resort's builder.

Edward's son, Paul, who was the firm's accountant, still remembers the amount of that bill more than 30 years later: $83,600. The reason? The money never came.

'That began the demise of the Edward J. Friel Company...which has been around since my grandfather,' he said.

Donald Trump often portrays himself as a savior of the working class who will 'protect your job.' But a USA TODAY NETWORK analysis found he has been involved in more than 3,500 lawsuits over the past three decades — and a large number of those involve ordinary Americans, like the Friels, who say Trump or his companies have refused to pay them.

At least 60 lawsuits, along with hundreds of liens, judgments and other government filings reviewed by USA TODAY NETWORK, document people who have accused Trump and his businesses of failing to pay them for their work. Among them: a dishwasher in Florida. A glass company in New Jersey. Painters. Waiters and other hourly workers at his resorts and clubs. Real estate brokers. And, ironically, several law firms that once represented him in these suits and others.

Trump's companies also have been cited for 24 violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act since 2005 for failing to pay overtime or minimum wage, according to U.S. Department of Labor data. Those cases were resolved by the companies agreeing to pay back wages.

All of this is very well known but when you're in a state of denial the only thing that helps is a significant amount of counseling or psychiatric help.

The US has lost a lot of its remaining influence and respect in the last year and a half during the Trump circus act. But I don't think Don and his goons are smart enough to be able to steal Venezuelan oil revenue and I don't think they've made a dollar on it to date.

Cheney thought Iraq was going to be this huge income stream and that never happened and Don likely thought that he was going to figure out a way to steal Iran's oil and that's never going to happen.

The US, Americans, Trump supporters, and folks around the world are experiencing one disappointment after another since Trump got elected. The trash man has broken nearly every promise he made..
