Trump Signs Order Renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America

US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order aimed at renaming Lake Ontario as “Lake America”, adding a further flashpoint to a deepening trade dispute with Canada.

The decision follows the breakdown of US-Canada trade talks late last week. The US then imposed new 50% tariffs on C$28bn ($20bn) worth of Canadian goods, while Canada said it will respond with “dollar for dollar” counter-tariffs next month.

Trump had previously warned on social media that he would seek to change the name of the lake, one of the five Great Lakes shared by the two countries. On Thursday, he said the order was “official, effective immediately” and that his administration had completed the paperwork needed to carry out the change.

US Department To Update Geographic Name Records

In the order, Trump directed the US Department of the Interior to update the Geographic Names Information Service, the official repository of domestic geographic names in the United States, to reflect the new name.

He argued that the lake’s renaming was not intended as a direct message to Canada, but said the country had “been ripping us off for a long time on trade”.

Speaking as he signed the order in the Oval Office, Trump said he had been considering the change “for a long time” and drew a comparison with other US geographic name changes, saying there was a “gulf” and a “lake”, before suggesting that the Atlantic or Pacific could also be renamed.

There is no single internationally recognised body that sets official names for international waters. The order therefore concerns how the US officially recognises a place within its own geographic records, rather than creating a global naming authority to compel other states.

Canada Says Lake Ontario Will Remain

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said the name Lake Ontario can be traced back more than 400 years. In a post on Thursday, he pointed to its use before the formation of the Canadian Confederation and the US Declaration of Independence.

ONTARIO.jpg

Carney wrote that Canada recognises the lake as Lake Ontario “today and forever”, adding that the United States was “changing” in areas including trade relations, foreign policy and national monuments.

Canada’s response also included reference to long-standing naming origins across the Great Lakes region. Names of four lakes — Ontario, Huron, Michigan and Erie — come from indigenous words, while Lake Superior was named after an anglicised French term. Lake Ontario, the smallest of the Great Lakes, borders the Canadian province of Ontario and the US state of New York.

Earlier this week, Canadian Industry Minister Melanie Joly rejected the notion that Canada would adopt the US change, saying: “We’ll always call it Lake Ontario.”

Officials have also previously argued that one country’s decisions do not oblige others to follow.

Past US Name Changes And Mexico Dispute

Trump’s latest executive order follows a similar move during his first term beginning in 2025. At that time, he signed an order changing the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. Mexico rejected the change, saying a single country cannot rename a shared body of international water.

That renaming dispute also affected how the gulf is shown on maps. In the earlier case, Google Maps displayed “Gulf of America” for users in the US, while users in Mexico saw “Gulf of Mexico”. For other countries, the listing included both names in a combined format.

The Lake Ontario order comes amid US-Canada relations deteriorating to new lows, with both sides trading insults during the dispute over tariffs and trade conditions over the past week. On Friday night, talks collapsed at the last moment, with both sides accusing the other of pushing for last-minute changes to a tentative deal.

There was, however, a sign on Thursday that there could be room for renewed negotiation. Canadian US trade minister Dominic LeBlanc said in a post on X that the US had withdrawn some demands around labelling requirements in French, and that measures to promote French language and Canadian culture would not be subject to future US trade actions. He said Canada looked forward to further clarifications that could enable a mutually beneficial agreement reflecting Canadian sovereignty.

He makes even the great lakes better, more American.

So creative, so hard working.

This president has to be the greatest there ever was.

Now if only he'd invade Canada already.

Utterly deranged. Hard to believe any president, not just Trump, has the power to single-handedly change the geographical names of places simply on a whim--or, in Trump's case, because he's a spoiled, petulant, bully brat. On the bright side, I checked and he can't rename Washington, DC to Trump, DC so I guess that's a little cold comfort. But, there's an awful lot of grographical names for him to screw with . . .

That is the point ... he does not have this power. He can demand the Executive branch of the US government use the name in official documents but has no power over all of us outside that limited affect and as has been stated, this all will be done away with shortly. He is being forced to deal with his own limited time and power. My hope is that the dress will bring on what will be a freat relief for the American and global community.

Be just like the Gulf of America.

, the United States, has officially added the "Gulf of America" to its national maps and federal documents.

Other Countries: No other foreign governments have adopted or recognized the U.S. name change, keeping the historical designation on their national maps.

Foreign governments run by leaders with very tiny egos don’t get a vote on American maps. Trump renamed the waters under its control on its own federal documents and maps. Exactly the way every sovereign country does.

Their refusal to update theirs is about as relevant as a toddler refusing to acknowledge the alphabet...

Seems for me that Canada’s "big flex" is a local councillor and a handful of residents throwing a toddler tantrum over a street sign that has zero impact on anything...

This is equivalent like kid screaming “I’m not your friend anymore!” and stomping off to rename their lemonade stand.

Petty and ignorant. With one single act, he has forced people who were still willing to give him a chance, to say enough. He has reduced the USA to the laughing stock of the free world. Rather pathetic that border state Governors and Congressional members have not said anything. Trump has lost the plot.

They have. Lake Michigan is now Lake Wisconsin.

We should probably start working on alternative names for all Canadian cities.

I never liked "Toronto". Sounds really stupid.

When the US invades all of Canada could be renamed.

We could probably retain Vancouver, that sounds allright. But a lot of the other names just have to go, "Toronto", "Ottawa"...I mean seriously...what were they thinking?

Trump tower has just been renamed, the world will start to refer to it as NATALIE TOWER... if he only knew how the world is reacting to his tantrums and what the international community refers to him, the guy has no face, no credibility, no respect for anything or anybody, no education... he's just a senile old man that should be taken to any mental institution that would accept him

"Let's just call it Lake Natalie so we know you'll start protecting our Great Lakes," the Michigan lawmaker wrote on X.

You have to admit "Lake America" sound so much better than "Lake Ontario".

The latter is flat and foreign sounding. "Lake America" is almost cinematic.

Beautiful name, which no doubt a lot of countries will adopt.

The people living the lake won't even adopt it and it will be dropped quickly after the Trump era.

I'm on Canada's side 100 percent.

The US has a rogue president.

He doesn't reflect the views of the American people on many important issues.

He favors Russia over Ukraine. Americans favor Ukraine.

Americans never wanted his shambolic war on Iran.

Americans do like tariff trade wars.

Americans definitely do not love the leader of North Korea.

Trump can save it. He checks out the city, Jets’ playoff record and immediately declares the whole operation a disaster, the worst and very sad.

He then names it Trump City, Manitoba (and! he’d try to annex the province while he’s at it) and the jets he names "Winnipeg Big Beautiful Bombers". Winnipeg Big Beautiful Bombers could have gold jerseys and mascot would have a tiny red hat. Team song of course YMCA remix. Season tickets you get with a sternly worded letter about how the old Jets were a total catastrophe before I saved them.

City skyline should get a giant gold T and of course airport should be Trump International Airport Winnipeg. It was formerly known as a place nobody wanted to fly to in January...

That’s the Trump vision for Winnipeg how I see it. Until then Winnipeg stays cold and the Jets stay the Jets… until the gold paint arrives.

China is rising.

Everybody knows this.

I now believe this is a very good thing.

Whether or not it's a good thing remains to be seen but there's no doubt that China and Asia for the most part are rising, while America and many parts of the West are declining. Trump certainly said the right things when it comes to changing that, but his policies have done nothing but make America weaker and diminish America's influence.

I still love that speech that Jeff Daniels made in The Newsroom, even though it was over a decade ago it was incredibly accurate, and on the money, and almost a prophetic vision towards America's future, which is unfolding more dramatically today. Due to the dunce.

Sharon, the NEA is a loser. Yeah, it accounts for a penny out of our paychecks, but he (gesturing to the conservative panelist) gets to hit you with it anytime he wants. It doesn't cost money, it costs votes. It costs airtime and column inches. You know why people don't like liberals? Because they lose. If liberals are so fricking smart, how come they lose so GODDAM ALWAYS!

And (to the conservative panelist, with a straight face) you're going to tell students that America's so starspangled awesome, that we're the only ones in the world who have freedom? Canada has freedom, Japan has freedom, the UK, France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Australia, Belgium has freedom. Two hundred seven sovereign states in the world, like 180 of them have freedom.

And you—sorority girl—yeah—just in case you accidentally wander into a voting booth one day, there are some things you should know, and one of them is that there is absolutely no evidence to support the statement that we're the greatest country in the world. We're seventh in literacy, twenty-seventh in math, twenty-second in science, forty-ninth in life expectancy, 178th in infant mortality, third in median household income, number four in labor force, and number four in exports. We lead the world in only three categories: number of incarcerated citizens per capita, number of adults who believe angels are real, and defense spending, where we spend more than the next twenty-six countries combined, twenty-five of whom are allies.

None of this is the fault of a 20-year-old college student, but you, nonetheless, are without a doubt, a member of the WORST-period-GENERATION-period-EVER-period, so when you ask what makes us the greatest country in the world, I don't know what the fu@@ you're talking about?! Yosemite?

We sure used to be. We stood up for what was right! We fought for moral reasons, we passed and struck down laws for moral reasons. We waged wars on poverty, not poor people. We sacrificed, we cared about our neighbors, we put our money where our mouths were, and we never beat our chest. We built great big things, made ungodly technological advances, explored the universe, cured diseases, and cultivated the world's greatest artists and the world's greatest economy. We reached for the stars, and we acted like men.

We aspired to intelligence; we didn't belittle it; it didn't make us feel inferior. We didn't identify ourselves by who we voted for in the last election, and we didn't scare so easy. And we were able to be all these things and do all these things because we were informed. By great men, men who were revered. The first step in solving any problem is recognizing there is one—America is not the greatest country in the world anymore.

Please, somebody, please make it all stop. Either Trump thinks this is a serious response, which is alarming in its childish foot-stamping madness. Or he is again trolling, which is equally disturbing, as it means he has no ability to focus on things that matter when multiple crises exist, many of them at his own making.

In Switzerland, no one would give that little push.

Not because the Swiss like Trump, but because Swiss recovery teams would have to risk their lives to clean up the mess.

-> Matterhorn is located there

Side Info:

There are already enough foreign idiots who crash-land in farmers' fields while base jumping, leaving their shattered bodies to be cleared away. (Lauterbrunnen - 6 dead base jumpers every year, mostley foreigners).
