Trump Signs Order Renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America

US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order aimed at renaming Lake Ontario as “Lake America”, adding a further flashpoint to a deepening trade dispute with Canada.

The decision follows the breakdown of US-Canada trade talks late last week. The US then imposed new 50% tariffs on C$28bn ($20bn) worth of Canadian goods, while Canada said it will respond with “dollar for dollar” counter-tariffs next month.

Trump had previously warned on social media that he would seek to change the name of the lake, one of the five Great Lakes shared by the two countries. On Thursday, he said the order was “official, effective immediately” and that his administration had completed the paperwork needed to carry out the change.

US Department To Update Geographic Name Records

In the order, Trump directed the US Department of the Interior to update the Geographic Names Information Service, the official repository of domestic geographic names in the United States, to reflect the new name.

He argued that the lake’s renaming was not intended as a direct message to Canada, but said the country had “been ripping us off for a long time on trade”.

Speaking as he signed the order in the Oval Office, Trump said he had been considering the change “for a long time” and drew a comparison with other US geographic name changes, saying there was a “gulf” and a “lake”, before suggesting that the Atlantic or Pacific could also be renamed.

There is no single internationally recognised body that sets official names for international waters. The order therefore concerns how the US officially recognises a place within its own geographic records, rather than creating a global naming authority to compel other states.

Canada Says Lake Ontario Will Remain

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said the name Lake Ontario can be traced back more than 400 years. In a post on Thursday, he pointed to its use before the formation of the Canadian Confederation and the US Declaration of Independence.

ONTARIO.jpg

Carney wrote that Canada recognises the lake as Lake Ontario “today and forever”, adding that the United States was “changing” in areas including trade relations, foreign policy and national monuments.

Canada’s response also included reference to long-standing naming origins across the Great Lakes region. Names of four lakes — Ontario, Huron, Michigan and Erie — come from indigenous words, while Lake Superior was named after an anglicised French term. Lake Ontario, the smallest of the Great Lakes, borders the Canadian province of Ontario and the US state of New York.

Earlier this week, Canadian Industry Minister Melanie Joly rejected the notion that Canada would adopt the US change, saying: “We’ll always call it Lake Ontario.”

Officials have also previously argued that one country’s decisions do not oblige others to follow.

Past US Name Changes And Mexico Dispute

Trump’s latest executive order follows a similar move during his first term beginning in 2025. At that time, he signed an order changing the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. Mexico rejected the change, saying a single country cannot rename a shared body of international water.

That renaming dispute also affected how the gulf is shown on maps. In the earlier case, Google Maps displayed “Gulf of America” for users in the US, while users in Mexico saw “Gulf of Mexico”. For other countries, the listing included both names in a combined format.

The Lake Ontario order comes amid US-Canada relations deteriorating to new lows, with both sides trading insults during the dispute over tariffs and trade conditions over the past week. On Friday night, talks collapsed at the last moment, with both sides accusing the other of pushing for last-minute changes to a tentative deal.

There was, however, a sign on Thursday that there could be room for renewed negotiation. Canadian US trade minister Dominic LeBlanc said in a post on X that the US had withdrawn some demands around labelling requirements in French, and that measures to promote French language and Canadian culture would not be subject to future US trade actions. He said Canada looked forward to further clarifications that could enable a mutually beneficial agreement reflecting Canadian sovereignty.

Petty and ignorant. With one single act, he has forced people who were still willing to give him a chance, to say enough. He has reduced the USA to the laughing stock of the free world. Rather pathetic that border state Governors and Congressional members have not said anything. Trump has lost the plot.

He was elected to do two things, primarily. End DEI madness and stop illegal immigration as well as deport those illegally present. What did he spend his political capital on after election: Gulf of America, Canada 51st state, invade Greenland. All pointless, all easily reversed, all guaranteed to generate extended ill will. It all worked so well at destroying whatever momentum he had after the election that I guess he's decided to return to that theme in order to turn the midterms into a Trumpian Gotterdammerung.

President Trump is the goat and master Troller. No other President would have the godads to make this move. This obviously will inflame the liberal socialist, globalist Canuks further. President Trump is just making another move to Make America Great Again.

If the "liberal socialist" Canucks are inflamed by this move, imagine how upset the 'revolutionary socialist Canucks' are going to be when they find out about it.

Canucks have their loonies (birds and money)

Americans have their own loonie (in chief).

We should probably start working on alternative names for all Canadian cities.

I never liked "Toronto". Sounds really stupid.

When the US invades all of Canada could be renamed.

We could probably retain Vancouver, that sounds allright. But a lot of the other names just have to go, "Toronto", "Ottawa"...I mean seriously...what were they thinking?

Much better over here in UK. So many towns named after places in the USA.

Lake Michigan makes sense, as it is entirely in US territory. But 53% of the surface area of Lake Ontario is in Canada. So the name shoudn't be changed - even on the US side. Meantime, about 9 million people live within the Lake Ontario watershed, with a much larger share concentrated on the Canadian side compared to the largely rural U.S. shore. (Wiki)

I have an important question here:

Judging by the following image....

IS THIS GIRL......sort of......a FEMALE VERSION OF TRUMP?

She seems to be his spitting image, but just a female one....

image.png

I don't like the NEW LOOK of Americans these days.

Everything seems....TOUCHED UP, and TOTALLY FAKE....

So then, maybe appearances actually DO reflect reality?

She looks like she put on makeup, and hair, or is that a wig, for a CIRCUS performance.

YUCK....!!!!!

Funny that Canada spent years renaming streets, squares, universities, buildings and removing statues in the name of “reconciliation” and “reconsidering history.”

Yonge-Dundas Square → Sankofa Square.

Ryerson University → Toronto Metropolitan University.

Amherst Street → Rue Atateken.
Cornwallis Street → Nora Bernard Street.

Langevin Block → Office of the Prime Minister and Privy Council.

Sir John A. Macdonald statues removed in Victoria, Regina, Kingston and Charlottetown.

Schools, parks and public buildings renamed across the country.

Then Trump renames Lake Ontario and suddenly Canada discovers:

“YOU CAN’T JUST ERASE HISTORY!”

Oh, NOW names matter?

Apparently Canadian history is endlessly negotiable…

until an American picks up the Sharpie.

This is all just distraction.

Canadians are totally oblivious that their shh-itee dollarika is falling by the day, little by little.

Industry in Canada hollowed out day by day too.

A canuck buck barely buys 22 bahts these days.

Carney told you in his book where his loyalties are.

But never mind, just 'elbows up' Canadians ! 😂

What a pathetic excuse for a so called president of the USA.....I never ever liked spoiled little trust fund kids that inherieted millions and thought it made them special. Captain bone spurs posting his pic with patton and mcarthur in full military uniform acting like he belongs in the class of honored real military leaders is yet another sick perverted act in last few days. It never ends only gets worse as he slips more and more into la la land of dementia and mental illness.

I am nor sure if i am more sorry for trump or for the people who seem to think acting like a petulant deranged child is something to celebrate.

Trumps has passed an EO renaming Canada Geese - Donald’s Ducks

Just take the piss out of him.

But these stunts are not without cost. Renaming the Gulf of Mexico cost US business about $1 billion. You can probably apply the same to Lake Ontario. So that's $2 billion blown. Thats a 5% cut in US industry's basic research.

https://ncses.nsf.gov/pubs/nsf25353

The two main areas of basic research that industry funds is medicine and defence. So thanks to this, people will die of penis cancer, because that money that should have been spent on new early diagnosis was spent on updating a letterhead, a book, a map.. Thanks to this, US soldiers will die in some hellhole, because that money that should have been spent on keeping them safe was spent on updating a letterhead, a book, a map.

I'm surprised he didn't rename it Lake Trump.

Many Brits likely find it quite funny seeing the name Trump plastered over everything. it is slang for fart in some parts of the UK.

Also. I wonder if there is any connection between the word Trump and the french verb "tromper", which means to deceive, mislead or cheat.

I just signed executive order, that for the duration of the current administration, the White House shall be renamed to the Mad House, and Mar a Lago into Mar a Looney.

For the rest of the World, Trump's order and my order have about the same weight. They are irrelevant to the rest of the World.

You misunderstand the Candian sentiment, nor Canada. If you think that the US can afford to have a hostile nation of 40 million on its border, you are deluded. Nor does Trump have much support from the US public.
