UK considering ships and mine-hunting drones to reopen Strait of Hormuz

Britain is considering sending naval vessels and mine-hunting drones to the Middle East to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz, Energy Secretary Ed Miliband has said.

The government is discussing possible contributions with allies after US President Donald Trump called on several countries, including the UK, to deploy ships to secure the strategic shipping route.

About a fifth of the world’s oil supply normally passes through the narrow waterway. Its effective closure earlier in the conflict has pushed oil prices up sharply, raising concerns about the impact on global energy markets.

UK discussing options with allies

Speaking to the BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg programme on Sunday, Miliband said ministers were examining different ways Britain could help restore safe passage through the strait.

“It is very important that we get the Strait of Hormuz reopened,” he said, adding that the UK had already been in discussions with partners including the United States.

“There are different ways that we could contribute, including with mine-hunting drones,” he said. “All of these things are being looked at in concert with our allies.”

Miliband said the government was considering “any options” that could assist in reopening the vital shipping lane.

Trump calls for international naval support

The comments came a day after Trump urged multiple countries to send warships to the region.

Writing on his Truth Social platform, the US president said nations that rely on oil transported through the strait should help ensure its security.

He named the UK, China, France, Japan and South Korea among those that could deploy naval forces to keep the waterway open.

Trump said the United States would continue military operations in the area while working with other countries to restore safe passage for shipping.

Pressure over UK military response

The British government has faced criticism over the speed of its response to the crisis.

HMS Dragon left the UK earlier in the week and is heading to Cyprus, where it will support operations at the RAF base at Akrotiri.

However, the Royal Navy currently has no mine-hunting ships stationed in the Gulf after the last vessel in the region was withdrawn shortly before the conflict began.

Reports suggest the UK may instead deploy mine-hunting drones, which are designed to trigger naval mines safely by mimicking the movement of passing ships.

Concerns over energy prices

The disruption in the Strait of Hormuz has had an immediate impact on energy markets.

Oil prices have risen from around $65 a barrel before the conflict to roughly $100, raising fears of higher fuel costs and inflation in many countries.

Asked whether the government might reconsider a planned rise in UK fuel duty later this year, Miliband said ministers would support the public during the crisis.

“We will stand by the British people in this crisis,” he said, though officials indicated no final decision had yet been taken on the planned increase.

From what I understand the UK is not getting involved in the attacks on Iran or sending any warships apart from the one sent to Cyprus in a defensive role.

They have said sending warships may widen the conflict.

They are sending a support ship as a floating logistics hub and medical platform to support forces and potential evacuations. helicopters and possibly drones air & water.

There will be riots if Starmer brings the UK into this illegal war.

At the rate the Lawyer-in-Charge makes decisions, the war will be over before any ship leaves town.

I hope so. But this message from milliband doesn't sound good.

It is very wise of them to avoid getting involved in Trump's War, he started it, he's got to dig his way out of it at this point. The blazing idiot has to answer for his spectacular mistakes, his arrogance and hubris, and an extraordinary lack of judgment.

It's likely he did this either to distract from the Epstein scandal, or to further enrich his family with the purchase of a drone company in the name of his sons, which will supply the US Military with new drone technology. Just more corruption from the most corrupt president in American history by a very wide margin.

They might have to requisition the pedaloes on the Serpentine , give them a quick camoflage paint job , and send the entire fleet.

The Victory is also available but not really ready to set sail. Then there is HMS Belfast. We are still in the game.

"Reopening the Strait" is an illegal act in an undeclared war. Toadying to Trump.

Had a good laugh at that

Unfortunately it's not far from the truth. For decades ever since the USSR collapsed and Russia appeared to be opening up coming in from the cold successive governments have seen defence as an easy target for cuts.

Not necessarily their fault the threat appeared to have diminished, ask anyone would they rather have a new hospital or a new warship and most people would have gone with the hospital.

It's only now after Russia invaded Ukraine that governments all over Europe are waking up to the fact that peace has a price.

The governments first priority Is or should be to protect its people.

My solution to stop the cuts would be there should be a law that imposes a ring fenced percentage of GDP for defence that whatever government is in power would have to adhere to. I would like to see 5%

After seeng what is happening in Ukraine and Iran I would say an air defence system covering the UK should be a priority.

Defence equipment ships planes tanks etc. take years to develop & build it's not something you can just pick up when you need it.

NATO in its current form cannot be relied on as the latest rant by Trump only confirms.

"In an 8 minute call to the Financial Times US President Donald Trump said NATO could face a "very bad" future if members didn't contribute forces to help re open the Strait of Hormuz, in an apparent attempt to blackmail countries into joining the war by threatening to withdraw American support for NATO. He also said he might delay a planned state visit to China if it also did not contribute."

My personal opinion is Europe would be better off and safer without the US in the UK and Europe they always seem to be at war somewhere in the world.

"US bases in Europe were, and remain, a key component of protecting the USA by projecting power and deterring threats forward.

Established after WW2, these bases provided forward defence against threats like the USSR, enable rapid response in Europe/Africa/Middle East, and secured transatlantic interests, preventing threats from reaching the US homeland" but as usual Trump is too thick to understand that or listen to those that do.

That threat is no longer there only Russia as a possibly but unlikely threat to the US so the only reason for the US to have those bases now is to project its power and influence abroad.

Europe has the expertise and capability to develop and build its own defence equipment as well as defend itself from Russia something it must do.

It can no longer rely on American weapons or NATO with the US as part of it.

They need to form a new European alliance or even a EU military with the UK allied to it and all US bases in the UK and Europe closed.

At the moment Russia is the only real threat and hopefully after the war in Ukraine has come to an end and Putin has gone relations can be normalised.

When I was in the British Army it was about 300,000 strong now it's down to about 75,000 just a quarter of what it was.

My father & grandfather were both in the Royal Navy in those days it was the biggest most powerful navy in the world compare that to now.

These days I now have one son in the Royal Navy and another in the Royal Marines fortunately none of them are in the Mediterranean (yet).

Why would the UK waste their time sending ships? The same applies to France, Norway, Korea and China. It's more fun and much safer to watch the yanks getting blasted by Iran's bombs. 🤣

Did you even bother reading the OP? As it clearly states, "HMS Dragon left the UK earlier in the week."

Yes, well aware. I am actually capable of reading, carefully.

My general point remains.

At least the UK still has minesweepers.

Latest is the US are redeploying some of their littoral combat ships, which were supposed to be the fill in capability, even if stand off, from the Gulf to Malaysia of all places.

Royal Navy Harrier autonomous minesweepers to depoly to the Gulf; there is already one in Bahrain, been there 3 years.

I’m surprised that eco moron Milligan’s would want to send a ship and burn polluting diesel all the way to the Gulf.

But it’s OK. China will surely step in and save the day now that Trump has threatened to call off his summit with Xi Jimping if they don’t help him.
