US Senate Unanimously Blocks Maxwell Pardon Proposal

The US Senate voted unanimously on Wednesday to oppose any presidential pardon or clemency for Ghislaine Maxwell, the convicted sex offender and associate of Jeffrey Epstein.

Resolution Targets Possible Clemency Deal

Sen. Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.) introduced the resolution as President Donald Trump nominated acting Attorney General Todd Blanche to remain in the role. Rosen said the measure was intended to stop Blanche from granting Maxwell clemency in exchange for help in clearing Trump’s name, allegations Trump has denied as being linked to Epstein.

Maxwell was convicted and sentenced to 20 years in prison for facilitating Epstein’s crimes. Rosen said it was unacceptable for Trump to entertain clemency for Maxwell, describing the idea as particularly troubling for a convicted sex trafficker.

Unanimous Consent on The Senate Floor

Rosen asked for unanimous consent for the resolution. There was no opposition on the Senate floor, meaning the chamber formally agreed to it without a recorded vote.

She added that if Republicans move Blanche’s nomination forward in the Judiciary Committee the next day, it would be the minimum they could do to make clear that they oppose any pardon for Maxwell.

Non-Binding Vote With Cross-Party Impact

The resolution is not legally binding, but it sends a message to the Trump administration and the public that senators from both parties reject any form of clemency for Maxwell. Rosen and fellow Democrats framed the vote as a way to ensure Congress’s position is understood before any clemency action is considered.

The move also reflects Democrats’ efforts to hold Blanche accountable for how he handled the Epstein files while serving as deputy attorney general.

Blanche has said he will not recommend a pardon for Maxwell. Trump, however, has not ruled out clemency, and Maxwell’s lawyer has said she will continue seeking it.

Blanche’s Interview and Prison Transfer

Blanche interviewed Maxwell for two days last summer and produced written testimony that Maxwell provided. In that material, Maxwell said she had never seen Trump engage in improper conduct.

Shortly afterward, Maxwell was moved to a lower-security prison facility. Blanche has defended the transfer.

    Even with a unanimous Senate vote, a president could still legally issue a pardon or clemency, and it would take effect. The vote is political, not legal.

    If they actually gave a <deleted> about the 1000+ sex trafficking victims, wouldn't it be better to pass a law sending anyone to jail who failed to comply with the

    Epstein Files Transparency Act?

    IMHO, as long as DJT remains as president the Epstein files will not totally be released as the Congressmen doing the checking of the files indicate that Trump's name appears "millions" of time - that is a quote from one of the investigators from the Congress. Too many of the victim's indicate that Trump participated in illegal sexual conduct so he needs to be investigated thoroughly and if found guilty, tried and imprisoned along with all the other rich and powerful friends that foreign countries are doing but US can't with the DOJ controlled by Trump.

    Seriously? Biden and the Dems had those files for 4 years. Don't you think they'd have pulled them out if they implicated Trump?

    Edit: Just to be clear, I have nothing against gay Dems or their staff having sex. Just not in the Senate or House chambers, please. Think of Trudy the cleanup lady who has to clean up behind them.

    Well IMHO, I do think that some government administrators other than just Trump's have been negligent in investigating and bringing the guilty to court and thus to jail and exposure and once the total files are revealed for all to read then maybe others that were negligent will also be investigated. Biden I think also wanted to shield Clinton and some of the rich and powerful Democrats named in those files. It is a bit embarrassing that other countries are bringing some of these rich and powerful folks to charges and exposure while too many in the US are being protected by the the president's DOJ.

    The Biden administration did not unilaterally release the Jeffrey Epstein files because officials adhered to standard institutional norms of Department of Justice (DOJ) independence, treating the matter as a law enforcement issue rather than a political tool.

    The Biden administration maintained that the executive branch should not direct the DOJ or FBI to release investigative records or grand jury materials outside of standard, formal legal processes.

    Maxwell's appeal was underway so releasing information during the process would not be considered.

    After almost 2 years in office, I don't see any new evidence to support his claims that the criminal indictments against him were from Biden weaponizing the law.. If you have please share.

    Names are not evidence. Trump's DOJ has not uncovered or announced new criminal evidence of its own on Jack Smith. If you have, please share.
