Zelenskyy and Trump Agree to Meet in New York

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Sunday that he had spoken with US President Donald Trump and that the two agreed to meet in New York.

In a post on social media, Zelenskyy described the conversation as “important” and said they had “got through a lot” during their discussion. He added that there was “diplomatic momentum” and said the meeting “could change a lot”, without giving any indication of when it would take place.

Call Leads To Agreed New York Meeting

Zelenskyy said the call confirmed plans for a meeting between the two leaders in New York. He did not specify the date or time, and he did not outline any further details about the agenda.

Peace Track And De-Escalation Ideas

Zelenskyy said he and Trump discussed Ukraine’s approach to negotiations, describing the “peace track” as the top priority. He said the conversation included ideas for de-escalation steps and for addressing what he described as fundamental security issues.

He cited energy security and food security, and also said the discussion covered the protection of human life. Zelenskyy said Ukraine was working with the American team and was ready to take “serious steps”.

He did not provide additional information about what measures might follow or how they would be implemented.

Thanks For Kyiv Visit And Sanctions Law

Zelenskyy also thanked Trump for a visit to Kyiv earlier this month by the US presidential envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law.

Zelenskyy said the US delegation had gone through key details and had seen the situation in Ukraine “firsthand”. He said their discussions reinforced the focus on the peace track.

In addition, Zelenskyy thanked Trump for signing the Lindsey Graham bill into law. The bill is named after the late Republican senator and was passed by Congress earlier this month.

Zelenskyy said the measure imposes primary and secondary sanctions on Russia and on other countries that support Russia in its invasion of Ukraine. He concluded by saying that “there must be peace” and by thanking “everyone who stands with Ukraine”.
