October 27, 200718 yr Flooding on Samui Island subsiding SURAT THANI: -- The flooding situation on Thailand's popular tourist island of Samui in this southern province is easing, even as further heavy rainfall is expected in the upper South. Surat Thani officials on Saturday continued pumping off floodwaters which have flooded Samui Island. Several parts of the island have been submerged under almost 30 centimetres of floodwaters while there was only a light rainfall on the island Saturday morning. Authorities said they expected the situation would return to normal in the next few days if there was no more rain. Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department announced on Saturday that low pressure from the South China Sea was lying above the Gulf of Thailand, causing heavy rainfall in upper southern provinces. It urged people in the risk-prone provinces to be on alert for flash floods and water run-off. Waves in the Gulf are expected to be as high as two metres and small trawlers are asked not to venture to sea, the department said. --TNA 2007-10-27
