There's a street in Nonthaburi (jsut north of BKK) where they only sell wood furniture, wood floors etc. Bang-something. Possibly Bang Poo or something like that. There are also numerous shops in china town, but the street in Nonthaburi is cheaper.

Another alternative is a floor factory out in Phuttamonthon sai 5 - I have their contact details somewhere but not handy at the moment.

As a reference, Mai Teng parquet, 3/4" thick should be 300-500 baht per square meter for "Grade A" depending on size of the wood pieces.

If you are putting it over a concrete slab floor i wouldn't recomend it. It is a very complicated and costly install to be properly done to stop moisture getting to the wook. i love wood floors and always had them in the states, I built custom homes for a living. Here i brought a Cotto wood look tile [several colors] with the grain etched out of it. each tile is 6" x 24" each and if you lay it in the proper pattern [each new piece perpendicular to the previous and offset 6"] you cannot tell it is not wood. so far everyone thinks it is real wood and it will last forever. if you are in jomtien i will be happy to show it to you

There is a company, name escapes me, who sell their own differant types of wodd floor coverings. I've seen their shops in Central Bangna (the 5th floor where all the furniture shops are) and in Fashion Island (level 1 near Homepro entrance where they sell off the electrical goods).

It is called "Bang Paw" - probably easiest if you take the skytrain to Mo Chit and then a taxi from there.

We're building a house in Kanchanaburi and we're using wood flooring in our bedroom.

In your case there is another alternative. There is a parquet floor factory right in Tha Muang. Drive to Tha Muang, pass through the market, turn onto the muslim soi (11), pass through it down to the traffic light, cross the highway and continue to the bridge over the irrigation canal. Turn right before the bridge and you'll see a high wooden plank. Behind that plank is the floor factory. Ring the doorbell next to the gate - they have [unfriendly] dogs.

A general piece of advice when buying parquet: buy one or a few sample pieces first unless you are in panic. Check the weight, measure height, width and thickness. Then keep it on a flat surface in an airconditioned room (or with a number of hours of A/C every day) for a month or so. Re-check the weight, height, width and check for any cracks, twisting or bending. If it cracks, bends, shrinks, or lose weight it has not been properly dried and your floor will break when installed.

Drive down phuttamonthon sai 5, pass over the canal, turn right at the tile factory, follow the road until you pass over the canal and then the factory is right after the bridge. They also make doors, window frames etc in addition to a bunch of different kinds of parquet. The map link above is centered on the factory location.

"Not very hard wood either". Like a reddish Rosewood lookalike. Every bundle had at least 6 with knotholes.

The store in Nonthaburi has the same "B" grade for 550 baht.

Ouch, sounds like he tried to pull the old "farang price" thing. Check the place in Phuttamonthon too if you happen to pass by (which you will whenever you drive to BKK) - they didn't try "farang pricing" with me. B300 per sqm for 12"x2"x.75" grade A mai teng. 500 for makha mong in the same dimensions, although it is said to be not suitable for floors. (no idea why)

I thought so too. But we were looking at 4" wide not 2" wide.

So possibly he's only guilty of "faranging" me a little, not a lot.

We're going to see Cristina Aguilera next week and staying over in BKK. On the way back, we intent to stop and pick up the wood in Nonthaburi and hit Home Pro for hardware and Bonthawong for tile.

The company mentioned is Leowood, based out of Samphawut in Bangkok. Its actually owned by a couple of English guys though they arent here in Thailand. Their product is good, but price is from 1600/m2 and its pre-finished, meaning you cant refinish it without a major 2 or 3mmsanding session and a big headache.

Bang Po is where to head. Its actually a lot more than one street, its a whole area. Just bring along a Thai to explain to the taxi where you want to go and they all know it well.

There are real bargains to be had there, but it will take a bit of wandering around to find.
