Not sure why posted in General but will move it to Sports. :D

I apologize as I got lost in the excitement while posting it..... any long suffering fan can appreciate the associated delirium... :D

I can empathize, used to be a Cubs fan when working in Chicago. Probably would be catatonic if they won - 1938 I believe was their last. :D

There has been a lot of debate over the years about the best sports town in America. Boston has usually been one of the leaders in most people's minds, but I reckon this win should just about seal that distinction now.

Just as a matter of interest, given the title of World Champions they now have - how many teams from outside the US were taking part in this competition?

grtaylor that question has been asked many times and of course the answer is a big fat ZERO, however, I do believe that the name WORLD originally came from a sponsor of the same name.

Could one of our cousins confirm or deny please

"The title of this championship may be confusing to some readers from countries where baseball is not a major sport (or even where it is), because the "World" Series is confined to the champions of two baseball leagues that currently operate only in the United States and Canada.

The explanation is that when the term "World's Championship Series" was first used in the 1880s, baseball at a highly-skilled level was almost exclusively confined to North America, especially the United States. Thus it was understood that the winner of the major league championship was the best baseball team in the world. The title of this event was soon shortened to "World's Series" and later to "World Series"."

It's ok... former Boston Red Sox great Tony C, provides ample evidence to the tremendous differences as an injury of his type is not going to occur in rounders.

Hit by a pitch which shattered his cheekbone and permanently damaged his retina.

Nevertheless, the New York Yankees still manage to steal the headlines from the Red Sox nation with the news that A-Rod will not be returning to wear the real 'pinstripes' in 2008.

I think the real current world champions are actually Cuba.

Cheers

While the World Champion Boston Red Sox do have 3 players from nearby Puerto Rico and 3 from the Dominican Republic, they don't currently have any players on their roster from Cuba.

While the Boston Red Sox did win a competition referred to as the world series, the side that represents the nation of Cuba did win the Baseball World Cup in 2005 as organized by the International BAseball Federation. This competition comprised of 18 countries and was held in Holland.

As the next Baseball World Cup will be held in Chinese Taipei from November 6th through November 18th Cuba remain reigning WORLD CHAMPIONS!

As an aside Great Britain won the inaugural World cup in 1938.

USA has won the cup a dismal 2 times.

Cuba has won 25 times.

Maybe if Boston had some Cubans they would win more regularly.

The answer to the so-called Baseball World Cup is found here:

Until 1996 the competition was limited to amateur players. Since 1996, professional minor league players have competed, but Major League Baseball has not allowed its players to participate.

Although, it's easy to concede that Cuba does have some pretty good amateurs and even the occasional professional.

The next one is 2009.

Boston didn't win that championship either.

Neither did USA.

So I guess Japan are the reigning WORLD CHAMPIONS!

As an aside Cuba were second.

USA didn't make it past the second group round.

If USA had'nt lost there last game to Mexico they would have qualified.

USA also lost to Mexico they would also have qualified for the 2004 Olympics which they didn't.

CUBA are the reigning Olympic Champions.

Boston don't even compete in any form of world championship.

Can we change the title of the thread to reflect this, maybe "Boston Red Sox win 2007 Can-Am Championship"

Cheers

The Major Leagues consist of the best players in baseball from countries all around the world and represent the absolute pinnacle of world-wide talent. Failing to recognize that reveals a fundamental lack of understanding of the sport. The champion of the Major Leagues is determined only after completing a grueling and unequaled 162-game season, followed by an extensive play-off competition which culminates in the World Series. The just concluded World Series had 16 players from 6 different countries, other than the USA, on the 2 teams. Whichever team wins that World Series is truly deserving of the title, "World Champions."

Rubbish.

So how come a team made op of the best of the best from the MLB including the following who even I've heard of

Roger Clemens

Derek Jeter

Alex Rodriguez

Ken Griffey Jr.

couldn't win a tournament intended to showcase their talents.

Calling the Boston Red Sox World Champions defies logic.

Its like saying the Leicester Tigers are the World Champions of rugby.

In team sports true world champions are recognized when one nation's team defeat all comers in a competition.

Japan or Cuba , take your pick ,are Baseball's true world champions.
