Philosophical group formed by Ex-TRT

A foundation of former Thai Rak Thai executives will be launched tomorrow which will focus on "igniting good ideas for the sake of the country."

Phongthep Thepkanchana (TRT Banned #10), President of the 111 Foundation [and current Thaksin spokesperson], said many of the 111 banned politicians agreed that such a foundation would give them a forum to work for society at a time when their political roles are limited.

A Constitution Tribunal ruling last year disbanded the Thai Rak Thai Party in an electoral fraud case and 111 of its executives were stripped of their electoral rights for five years.

Former Thai Rak Thai executives, including ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra (TRT Banned #1), Sudarat Keyuraphan (TRT Banned #3) and Chidchai Vanasatidya (TRT Banned #34), are expected to join the foundation's launch at the Centara Grand Hotel, according to Sansanee Nakpong (TRT Banned #111), Thaksin's spokesperson [among many] and herself a former Thai Rak Thai executive.

She said that some 10 former Thai Rak Thai executives would also appear on stage for some discussions and engage in a question-and-answer session with reporters.

A source said the ex-premier had yet to accept a foundation request to give a speech at the launch.

Phongthep, who also acts as Thaksin's spokesman, said yesterday the foundation had been registered with a capital of 500,000 baht.

He said the foundation would encourage the adoption of ideas it viewed as good for society and the former Thai Rak Thai executives would share their experiences with others.

Phongthep said the foundation would not be involved with politics as the law prevents it. Nor would it support any political party. However, some foundation members might become politicians as long as their roles were separated.

Less than half of the 111 banned Thai Rak Thai Party executives yesterday showed up to attend a press conference to unveil the House No 111 Foundation, which organisers say is a non-political, non-profit advocacy group for social causes.

Forty-nine banned party executives were present while absentees included several high-profile figures, such as former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra and veteran politician Chaturon Chaisang.

Thaksin was initially scheduled to return from London to chair the unveiling ceremony, but had a change of plan at the last minute.

Those seen at the ceremony included Chidchai Vanasatidya, Pongthep Thepkanchana, Vichit Plansrisakul, Sora-at Klinpratoom, Phumtham Wechayachai, Varathep Ratanakorn, Prayuth Mahagitsiri, Prachuab Chaiyasarn, Pimol Srivikorn and Suchai Charoen-ratanakul.

Vichit said invitations were sent out to all the 111 to become founding members of the foundation. Many agreed to apply for membership, but could not be present at the yesterday's ceremony due to prior engagements.

Those who did not show up but have made contributions were Chaturon, Adisai Bodharamik, Pinij Charusombat and Vichet Kasemthongsri, he said.

"The foundation plans to organise a fund-raising dinner later this month and Thaksin will chair the event," he added. Phumtham said the foundation would aim to make social contributions without getting involved in politics. He dismissed speculation that it would push for the rewriting of the 2007 charter.

Chidchai said he wanted to remain a good citizen and carry out his civic duties even though his voting rights have been revoked for five years.

Thaksin, who is the foundation chairman, was earlier expected to preside over the launch of the 111 Foundation at the Sofitel Centara Grand Bangkok hotel, but failed to show up due to engagements abroad. Thaksin's absence caused a quiet atmosphere at the foundation's launch as only around 50 of the former executives attended. Pongthep Thepkanchana, president of the 111 Foundation and personal spokesman for Thaksin, said the former PM had postponed his return to Thailand from yesterday to next week due to business engagements overseas. Pongthep, however, denied that the postponement had anything to do with the recent flag controversy. Pongthep said the foundation would give the banned party executives a forum to do charity work for society. He denied the setting up of the foundation was politically motivated. Phumtham Vechayachai, one of the banned politicians, said he hoped justice would prevail and time would prove the banned executives innocent. Thaksin arrives to resolve coalition difference

Former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra returned to Thailand yesterday to exercise his influence over ongoing disagreements within the ruling People Power Party and the coalition government, a source said yesterday.

His personal charisma among politicians in the PPP and smaller coalition parties was expected to help solve the differences over the nominee for the new House speaker and constitutional amendments, said the source from the PPP.

Factions in the PPP are struggling to nominate their members to replace Yongyuth Tiyapairat, who last week resigned as the speaker of the House of Representatives. And coalition parties have been unable to agree to the PPP plan for extensive changes to the charter.

Thaksin arrived at Suvarnabhumi Airport late yesterday evening. He was greeted inside the arrival room for VIPs by his children, his sister Yingluck Shinawatra, politicians and some Cabinet members. His wife, Pojaman Shinawatra, was not present.

Unlike in previous trips home, only a few of Thaksin's supporters showed up to welcome him at the airport. He chatted with them briefly and gave them his autograph.

Thaksin also met a large group of reporters and photographers at the airport. He responded to their questions that focused mainly on a controversy in which his name appeared on the Thai national flag during Manchester City Football Club's recent match.

Security was tight with more than 100 police officers dispatched to the airport at the time of Thaksin's arrival. His motorcade later left the airport under the protection of the Special Branch police.

No-show takes much lustre off big TRT event

After two years away from the public limelight as a result of the five-year political ban imposed by the Constitution Tribunal, many of the 111 former executives of the now-defunct TRT Party turned out in force for the launch of the 111 Foundation at a Bangkok hotel on Friday. Unfortunately, though, ex-TRT leader Thaksin Shinawatra could not make the foundation's launch ceremony as he was tied up with business engagements overseas, or so said his personal spokesman Pongthep Thepkanchana. But some critics believe Thaksin chose to stay away to avoid meeting the media which was likely to bombard him with questions why his name appeared on the Thai national flag at the home stadium of his Manchester City football club. The event was supposed to be the first public get-together in two years for the former TRT executives. But because of Thaksin's no-show, it was rather low key and lacked the excitement and energy normally associated with the presence of the big boss. Vichit Plangsrisakul, the foundation secretary-general, said the foundation would hold a fund-raising function at the end of the month. The foundation's magazine , Home No 111, which contains articles written by former party executives and outsiders, will also be put on sale to raise money. Two years away from politics is a long time for these veteran politicians who eagerly yearn for an early comeback. Poomtham Vechayachai, a former executive and a close aide of Mr Thaksin, said he was proud of the foundation's name plate as it amounted to a declaration that the 111 former TRT executives were politically persecuted.

Thaksin Leaves for China

Today, ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra heads to China to play golf. He refused to answer questions posed by the press about the current problems with Manchester City Football Club.

This morning, former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, president of the Manchester City Football Club, arrived at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport for a flight to China.

When the media asked him about the rift in the Manchester City Football Club, he avoided the questions, saying only that was going to play golf in China.

Later, Thaksin's Spokesman, Pongthep Thepkanchana, disclosed that the exiled premier, as president of the Professional Golf Association of Thailand, has left for China to watch a golf tournament.

Pongthep said he doesn't know how long Thaksin will stay in China; however, he will return to Thailand if his mission is complete and there is no any further business in England.

Former executives and MPs of the Thai Rak Thai Party, including Newin Chidchob, Deputy Transport Minister Songsak Thongsri, and Deputy Education Minister Boonlue Prasertsopha, reportedly welcomed Thaksin at the airport.

JAKARTA, -- Former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra will be among the keynote speakers at the Indonesian Regional Investment Forum (IRIF) to be held here on May 26 and 27, the organizers said Wednesday.

Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is scheduled to open the event to be organized jointly by the Regional Representatives Council (DPD) and Global Initiatives.

"Former premier Thaksin will speak on behalf of the owners of Thai telecommunications company, Shin Corporation," DPD Deputy Chairman Irman Gusman, who is also chairman of the organizing committee, was quoted by the national Antara news agency as saying.

Koh Kong now has a casino complex operated by Koh Kong International, a firm owned by Pat Supapa, a senator representing the province and former governor. Gen Teah Banh was speaking as he joined Hun Sen and Cambodian Deputy PM Sok An in opening Road 48 and four new bridges. The road was built with one billion baht in financial assistance from Thailand. The Thai side was led by Deputy PM [and Thaksin brother-in-law] Somchai Wongsawat and Foreign Minister [and Thaksin lawyer/spokesman] Noppadon Pattama.

SJ, I must congratulate and thank you for your always connecting the nodes (however above the road must have been planned a long time ago, you think it's on to the way of this specific soon to be Casinowatra-island?). Anyhow I've been reading your posts for various years, and admire people like you (and all other chaps here) who stand up against this big scale corruption, which the big boys are doing here, on a daily bases.

It must be really frustrating for the parlaments opposition Khun Abhisit and the Democrats and all understanding Thai People, knowing of these games, and not being able to explain this to the country people (the voters and the foundation of those big boys) what we all see.

Koh Kong deal 'not linked'

Thaksin Shinawatra's planned development on Cambodia's Koh Kong is not linked to negotiations over the disputed area around Preah Vihear, former deputy army chief Gen Vichit Yathip said. Gen Vichit conceded he arranged a recent game of golf between Thaksin and Cambodian PM Hun Sen and said the two men discussed building a casino and entertainment complex on the Cambodian island. It would be a joint investment between Thaksin and businessmen in the Middle East.

PHNOM PENH - Thailand's ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra is planning to build a 'modern city' in neighbouring Cambodia, replete with a financial district and port, an official said Monday.

The businessman, who owns English football club Manchester City, told Cambodia's Prime Minister Hun Sen of his plans for Koh Kong province, near the Thai border, during a meeting on Friday in the capital Phnom Penh.

'He did not say how much money will be invested, he just told Prime Minister Hun Sen about his plan,' Hun Sen's spokesman, Eang Sophalleth, was quoted by Agence France-Presse as saying.

Thaksin, joined by other Thai investors, told Hun Sen that the planned city would include a financial centre, hospital, schools and housing.

A port to be used for fixing broken ships would also be included, he said.

Eang Sophalleth said Hun Sen welcomed the plan, asking Thaksin to work on his project with the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC).

Thaksin was toppled in a military coup in September 2006 and went into self-imposed exile in Britain.

The former Thai premier returned to Bangkok in late February after his allies returned to power in elections late last year.

btw, I've not spoken to a single Thai who thought this action by him was acceptable... in fact, most had a very strongly negative response...although, obviously from the pics, some of his zealot fans think it's ok...

Thaksin Shinawatra is planning large-scale investments in Cambodia with Koh Kong province serving only as his first step in his business ventures in the country, Cambodian Defence Minister Gen Teah Banh said yesterday. Lauding Thaksin as ''a capable person with a sharp vision'', the General said Thaksin would not only lead foreign businessmen to invest in Koh Kong, but they would also take part in tourism and energy ventures both inland and in maritime areas. "We welcome all investors *that's what Manchester City said* who will help develop Cambodia," Gen Teah Banh said. Koh Kong, which is opposite Trat, has been eyed by Thaksin as a prime location for his casino and entertainment complex development. Gen Teah denied any link between Koh Kong and other development projects initiated by Thaksin and Phnom Penh's move to nominate the Preah Vihear temple as a new World Heritage site. Besides the Koh Kong project, according to Gen Teah, Thaksin plans to develop new tourist attractions in Phnom Penh and other major cities. He also wants to work with Cambodia to make use of natural gas deposits in the overlapping maritime area between Thailand and Cambodia. The general admitted Thaksin wanted to invest in joint natural gas development. "I insist we've never talked about a trade-off between Preah Vihear and natural gas with Thaksin," Gen Teah said.

Cambodian Government Lets Thaksin Invest in Kong Island

The national Defense Minister of Cambodia disclosed that Thailand's exiled prime minister is gearing up to invest in Cambodia, but the move has no relation to the case of listing Preah Vihear Temple as a world heritage site.

Regarding Thailand's former premier Thaksin Shinawatra planning to invest in the construction of several projects at Cambodia's Kong Island, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense of Cambodia, General Tea Banh, said yesterday that the Cambodian government welcomed foreign business people who wish to invest in the country.

General Tea Banh also complimented Thaksin as an intellectual person who has a bright vision despite Thai officials having filed several corruption cases against him.

In addition to the investment project at Kong Island, Thaksin also reportedly has a plan to run tourism and natural gas businesses in Cambodia.

The Bangkok Post website had reported that Kong Island is the first destination for Thaksin to pin down his investments in Cambodia, including a casino and an entertainment complex. The project will be run jointly with a group of Middle Eastern businessmen and the billionaire owner of London's Harrods Department Store, Mohamed al Fayed.

General Tea Banh insisted that permitting Thaksin's investment in Cambodia is in no way related to the listing of Preah Vihear Temple as a world heritage site, and there is no other negotiation for a further exchange between the two countries on the development of a natural gas field in the overlapping maritime area, which will be discussed at a later date.

He said both the Thai and Cambodian governments are being pressured by their opposition parties on the issue of Preah Vihear Temple, particularly Cambodia, where a general election will be held on July 27th.

Doesn't surprise me Toxin going into business with al Fayed, his property agent and footie advisor in London. Another one suffering from paranoid delusions, who thinks they're all out to get him.
