The trans-Atlantic slave trade was operated by Europeans who purchased Africans already enslaved by other Africans, amongst whom slavery was already a common practice.

The United Kingdom was, to my knowledge, the first nation in modern times to outlaw slavery.

In 1772 a court of law declared slavery never legally authorised in Britain, and therefore illegal. But this court decision could not overturn legislation authorising slavery passed by colonial legislatures.

However escaped American slaves who fought for the British during the U.S. War of Independence were deemed to be free. And proved themselves in combat. Black loyalists were mostly evacuated at the war's end to Nova Scotia and Sierra Leone.

The Royal Navy's West Africa Squadron, formed to suppress the trade, operated from 1808 to 1867. Well over a thousand sailors perished, mainly due to fever. Some 1,800 ships were seized and about 150,000 slaves liberated in what has been described as "the most expensive international humanitarian intervention in modern history".

Released slaves from coastal areas were returned to their place of origin or to Freetown, while those from far inland, who had little chance of getting home alive, often opted to enlist in the Royal Navy or one of the West India Regiments.

Only in 1833 was slavery outlawed in the colonies themselves by an Act of Parliament which overruled colonial laws permitting it.

The question of slavery needs to be approached in a comprehensive manner. Included must be the seizure of slaves from the British Isles by North African slave-traders from what was then part of the Ottoman Empire. Their raids occurred mainly in the 17th century and chiefly upon towns and villages along the coasts of south-west England, Wales, and Ireland. Although they even went as far as the Thames Estuary.

Along the northern seaboard of the Mediterranean, the raids continued well into the 19th century , depopulating the region of millions of its inhabitants and hindering development. The slave-raids ceased with the French colonial subjugation of North Africa, beginning in 1830.

South-eastern Europe, as far north as the 'borderlands' latterly known as the Ukraine, was also subjected to seizure of quotas of slaves by the Ottoman authorities.

However, by far the greatest number of slaves in recent centuries were seized by the Arabs, operating mainly in East Africa. This was brought to a halt by British colonial expansion in the late Nineteenth Century.
