Ancient shipwrecks found in Gulf

By The Nation

The wreckage of two ancient sail ships, built during the Ayutthaya period 400 years ago, have been found at separate locations in the Gulf of Thailand, with a large number of celadon ceramics and other artefacts.

One ship was found north of Koh Tao, 6 nautical miles off the Surat Thani coast in the South. The other was discovered 60 nautical miles off Chanthaburi in the East, said Erbprem Watcharangkoon, a senior Fine Arts Department official.

Both sailing ships were bound for several countries in the region on regular routes used by cargo ships, before they sank to a depth of about 70 metres. They were built and used during the Ayutthaya period (1351-1767).

Apart from the wreckage, there were about 10,000 celadon items found in both ships, mostly still intact, but some were broken or damaged because of the use of fishing nets by modern trawlers. A number of the items have been recovered for study by the department's archaeologists.

Erbprem said the items were made in the Si Satchanalai area in the Kingdom of Sukhothai (1238-1583) in the area of modernday Sukhothai province, where a large number of historic kilns have been found.

A training session sponsored by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) is now underway in Chanthaburi to mark the site of one of the wrecks using geographic information system (GIS) technology. There are underwater archaeologists from 11 countries undergoing the training, which will end by June.

Kidney patients to get more benefits, says Somkiat

By The Nation

Labour Ministry permanent secretary Somkiat Chayasriwong yesterday affirmed that increased benefits for Social Security Office (SSO) subscribers with kidney diseases would be paid, as it had been an SSO board resolution.

Following the Thai Kidney Club's call for SSO to allow kidney patients to have the increased benefits -including kidney dialysis and hemodialysis, as approved in April - Somkiat said he would ask the SSO to implement the added benefits soon.

He said the matter had been tabled at an SSO sub-panel meeting and criteria and details were being worked out. He said there wouldn't be a problem about budget as it had been calculated already.

Somkiat said article 40 SSO subscribers (freelances voluntarily paid SSO distribution) were still entitled to medical care provided by the National Health Security Office's universal healthcare scheme because their SSO distribution was only for compensation in case of disability, death, unemployment and retirement.

The NHSO wouldn't cover general SSO subscribers, civil servants and those with health insurance, he added.

PM Downplays Impact of IMF Chief's Resignation on Thailand

The prime minister has downplayed the impact of the IMF chief's resignation on Thailand, saying he is more concerned about its repercussions on Europe's financial crisis.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said he believes the resignation of Dominique Strauss-Kahn as Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund or IMF will not have a direct impact on Thailand.

The premier added that he is more concerned that the IMF chief's departure will hinder efforts to solve Europe's debt crisis.

Strauss-Kahn's resignation came after a scandal in which he was alleged to have sexually abused a housekeeper at a hotel in Manhattan.

Abhisit is hoping the IMF will be able to find Strauss-Kahn's replacement shortly, but he would not comment on whether the new chief will come from an Asian country or not.

He noted that, typically, the deputy managing director will serve as acting chief while the post remains vacant.

The prime minister expects to see some kind of reform in the organization following the disgraceful incident.

Rift Grows in New Politics Party

The New Politics Party internal rift continues to grow as the party's secretary-general asserted his position in the party and accused its party leader of intentionally reporting false information.

Suriyasai Katasila, one of the core leaders of the People's Alliance for Democracy and deputy secretary general of New Politics Party, said that he has not given up his position in the party.

But the party leader, Somsak Kosaisuk, argues that Suriyasai has already quit.

Somsak also infromed the Election Commission or EC that Suriyasai has no executive authority in the party.

Suriyasai is fighting back by showing evidence that he remains in the post.

At the same time, Suriyasai accused Somsak of intentionally reporting false information.

Somsak, on behalf of the New Politics Party, has already given the EC the party-list of MP candidates, and is awaiting recognition by the commission, while Suriyasai claims that it was a personal decision made by Somsak to field candidates, not the party.

Four militant suspects die in Thai south shoot-out

YALA, May 20, 2011 (AFP) - Four suspected militants were killed in an early morning firefight with government security forces in Thailand's violence-prone south on Friday, police said.

Soldiers, rangers and police swept into a remote village in Yala province near the Malaysian border at dawn looking for the men, who were thought to be linked to an insurgency that has raged for more than seven years.

All four died in the ensuing 15-minute shoot-out and police said officers recovered handguns and assault rifles at the scene.

"We asked them to surrender but they did not heed the demand," said Panu Uthairat, head of Southern Borders Provinces Administrative Centre, a civilian development and oversight body.

He added that the men were wanted on long-standing arrest warrants.

More than 4,500 people, both Muslims and Buddhists, have died in almost daily attacks since shadowy insurgents launched an uprising in Thailand's southernmost region in early 2004.
