I hope I am not over-reacting here but I have just been talking to a Thai friend who visited Silom Soi 2 last night.

He says he had about 3 drinks before going to Soi 2 and remembers having about 3 drinks while he was there. The next thing he remembers is getting out of a taxi in KSR where his hotel is located. He had lost his gold chain (about 8,000 baht), left his wallet in the taxi (subsequently recovered from the police this morning), can't remember talking to anyone in DJ Station, can't remember catching the taxi and can't even remember getting drunk.

Now obviously this may be a genuine case of a drunken black-out, but first of all this guy is used to drinking shots at a rate I never even try keep up with. Secondly he was on his own and says he never spoke to anyone. Thirdly I would have thought that people who have memory black-outs from drink should at least remember the initial getting drunk bit.

The most obvious explanation to me is that his drink was spiked while left unattended.

Anyway, regardless of the truth behind the events last night I still think it is a good idea to pass on this warning about the dangers of leaving unattended drinks in popular Bangkok nightspots (at the very least, keeping an eye on your own drinks will stop barstaff from clearing them away while you pop off for a slash).

Hope this is valuable info. for some.

While my visits to bars and discos are on rare occasions, nonetheless, a month doesn't go by where my Thai mate doesn't warn me about having my drink drugged in a bar to obtain my valuables and he is getting that information from somewhere. And he continues with the "if you take them home" scenario in the mix.

These threads about spiked drinks have made me paranoid and very, very careful now. Before would leave unfinished drink unattended and think nothing of it.

Now I will never, leave an unfinished drink unattended, Will always finish drink, before going to the lew. even if I pee-pee in pants. Will return and order another drink and always ask for new glass, just in case.

So far, knock on wood, nothing has happened to me.

Thanks for the advice and warning all.

It sounds like he was drinking shots at the rate you have previously seen and that his memory can't recall anything after the first few drinks due to the amount he later consumed. It's happened to me before. The suddenly realising where he is and what he's doing hours later sounds typical of an alcohol induced black out as well. Whether or not he was on his own or spoke to anyone, it would appear he is unable to recall if he has had a black out.

Doesn't really sound like a case of being drugged to me. I've had that happen before as well and i was very aware of the fact it had happened, both when i first started to feel it's effects, and when i came round afterwards out of my unconcious state.

Well, none of the places on Silom soi 2 spike your drink. It would not be in their best intention do so. DJ does not, JJ does not, Espresso does not, The place that Gyents uses does not. Or Silom soi 2/1, soi 4 as a matter of fact. I think you may have had to much to drink and had a memory loss.

I think OPs post is about a casual acquaintances or opportunist taking advantage and spiking a drink to get the "gold" as was the case here. For those who suggest that he is a black out level alcoholic, please explain how the gold chain around his neck went missing? Loss of memory from alcoholic "black outs" does not mean loss of consciousness or function.

not had my drink spiked, but I was certainly warned about a character that is apparently a regular in the DJ/other gay bar scene. i was told that he deals drugs and tries to befriend people in the bar, and the story goes from there. I know this COULD be true cos the story was told to me only after the said guy flirted with me at DJ...think about it...why would a gay guy flirt with a woman!?! was trying to ask me and my (straight) guy friend to go join him and others at his place for a party. was only at that point that my other gay friend who frequents the area approached me and warned me to stay away from the said guy

(mind you not that I had any intention of joining his party :o )

I say it COULD be true, or maybe he was simply too drunk :D

(dont ask what we were doing at DJ :D )

I am not an alcoholic, nor have i ever been. You don't have to be in order to drink too much and have a black out. I have also mislaid things before when i have been drinking. People do stupid things when they are drunk. It really doesn't sound like he has been drugged, like i said, he would know that was the case if it had really happened. And if it did happen, why didn't his wallet get taken as well?

He had too much to drink is the most likely explanation.

What has been noticeable over the last few years is the theft which is problematic but unlikely to lead to a police report etc. If CC's or ID is stolen then it's virtually certain that a report will be filed and this could lead to police interest. If however, the individual is 'rolled' but nothing 'serious' is stolen then the event may well be written off to experience, or even "how much did I drink last night?".

The OP's account does fit this, except for the wallet in the taxi. As others have said there has been a re-growth in this, in both gay and straight locales.

I tend to agree with the OP and people should take care, I'm sure his warning is not unfounded.

I can cite two personal experiences in the last year in Soi 4 where I've suddenly began feeling really drunk and disorientated; far in excess of what could be expected for a modest amount of alcohol that was consumed. On both occasions the same dodgy individual was hanging around.......

Luckily I've realised it was time to leave and staggered home, waking up with no problems other than a severe headache, much worse than would be expected from alchohol alone.

Whilst I have no definite proof my drink was tampered with, I can't offer any other explanation. These events together with warnings from Thai friends have made me less likely to visit these venues, and to be much more cirumspect when I do.

just how do you leave a drink unattended in DJ Station? you can't even walk through there.....i am absolutely certain you can get something in your drink but it either have to be put there from the bartender, you asked someone to hold your drink and they did it or you put it there yourself just too too crowded with not a table in sight!

The real sophisticated "drink spiking" happens in Las Vegas. Where you can wake up with a neatly removed kidney. About a $20KUSD score. :o

North Africa you can loose your life just for the value of your blood and gold fillings. Sometimes just the gold. Life is cheap in some areas of the world.

I haven't spent much time in either Soi 2 or 4 in the past few years, but I think druggings are relatively rare and I don't think they are condoned in anyway by the establishments there.

I know numerous people who were drugged in Patpong at the girlie bars. I work with several and it was there first time in Thailand. One person ordered a drink and that was the last thing he remembers. He woke up in his hotel room minus all the money in his wallet and an expensive watch. At that time, in Patpong, the bartender/owners were complicit, since they served the drink.

There is no doubt that there are "predators" that hang around Soi 2 and 4 and you need to be careful.

The Las Vegas kidney myth is just that: http://urbanlegends.about.com/library/blkid.htm

There are plenty of casinos that will happily relieve you of your money, but your kidneys are safe.

If I'm alone in a bar anywhere, I always take my drink with me to the toilet. I guess it's forbidden in some places but I can't remember anyone complaining about it really... (I guess they might if you look like you have your own whiskey bottle in your pants.) If I'm with people I trust or know the staff well, I ask them to watch my drink for me and quality check any free substances that someone might want to donate there.

Sometimes I have gotten too drunk, but I think the problem is that the staff remembers me already and I always give a tip so they try to be nice and put way too much alcohol in my drinks! :o

Be careful, you might have other problems if it looks like you have somehting as big as a whiskey bottle in your pants!

I went for a drink round Ekkamai and got talking to a gay Thai guy sat next to me, I politely declined his advances before telling him to eff off when he got pushy.

I then blacked out for 4 hours. My Fitbit tells me I was active and walking about, but I have no memory of it. Looking through my phone, I wasn’t active sending messages or emails which i had been doing beforehand. Anyway I woke up this afternoon in my bed feeling completely dreadful, I’m pretty sure I got spiked.

horrible feeling

Should it be in any western dance club or in Thailand, one never...never leaves a drink unattended. And with all the hooker thieves around, one must enforce extra caution and prepare the room well before bringing back the prostitute the nice tourist guide to one's room. Cash, passports, valuables, portable apple computers and phones well hidden and locked, ID check  on arrival and departure from the hotel etc. And of course the good supply of condoms in case you are in double or triple ball????
